State Department Fellowship Opportunity

Are you interested in joining the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State or the USAID Foreign Service?

Representatives from the Pickering, Rangel, and Payne Fellowship Programs for a campus visit on February 27 to meet with juniors, seniors, and recent graduates. This event is co-hosted by the Federal and Global Fellows Programs and the National Scholarships.

IMPORTANT: The Pickering, Rangel, and Payne programs seek applications from students/alumni who are US citizens with financial need, especially those who are members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and women. 

The Pickering and Rangel Graduate Fellowships provide financial support through two years of graduate study, internships, mentoring, and professional development activities leading to an appointment in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Both programs have mid-September 2020 deadlines.

The Payne International Development Fellowship provides similar support through two years leading to an appointment with the USAID Foreign Service. It has an early November deadline.

Service Requirement: Recipients of all three programs are obligated to complete a minimum five-year term of service as a Foreign Service officer.

Eligibility requirements for all programs:
  • Applicants must be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall of 2021 for a two-year program at a U.S. university in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service. They can be in their senior year of their undergraduate studies, graduating by June 2021, or they can be college graduates.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
