Greenpeace: GIS & Data Visualisation Specialist

 

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The GIS Specialist will use mapping software to maintain our GIS database, analyze and disseminate spatial data and design digital maps for teams across GPUS. They are skilled at the art of telling a story through mapping and data visualization. The specialist will support the Data Strategist & GIS Lead in collecting requirements, and developing and executing project plans for both Development and Programs teams. They are able to prepare reports and give their professional opinion to explain geographic trends and findings to stakeholders, requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills. They will develop custom tools, applications, infographics, and web pages. They are adept at performing field work to collect data for our research teams. The specialist must be able to operate pro-actively and independently, and respond quickly to changing measures of success.

This position will allow GPUS to make the best strategic and cost effective decisions by providing stakeholders with the most up to date information and analyses. The role will be instrumental in the research needed to develop strategy for our electoral work by evaluating previous texting strategy for what approach yielded the best results. Additionally, as the country begins to re-open and more extensive canvassing becomes viable, the specialist will provide key insight into the best areas to target, using publicly available data to maximize profits as well as to diversify our supporter base. The position will also expand the organizations’ ability to capture audience attention by creating beautiful and impactful maps for use on our social media channels, email campaigns, website, and promotional materials. It will also take on some of the mapping work currently done by the Data Strategist & GIS Lead, so that they can focus on the long term impact plan of GIS systems at GPUS.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Analyzing spatial data through the use of mapping software
  • Discovering patterns and trends through spatial mapping of data
  • Designing digital maps with geographic data and other data sources
  • Producing maps and visualization showing the distribution of various kinds of data, for example: fire spread, melting of ice caps, electoral strategy, and supporter base patterns
  • Developing and evaluating mapping applications and tools
  • Performing data manipulation and cleaning to convert data into its desired form
  • Produce reports on geographic data utilizing data visualizations
  • Managing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types

Minimum requirements for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or related field required
  • Experience working with ESRI/ArcGIS platform is required. Additional experience with one or more of the following is a plus: Mapbox, or Carto, AutoCAD, QGIS
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently in an agile, fast paced environment
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users in an easily understandable manner
  • Experience working as part of a project team from remote locations
  • Familiarity with various fundraising channels with non profit organizations a plus
  • Proficiency with database programming languages such as SQL, R or Python a plus
  • Proficiency with front end design languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and various mapping languages such as Arcade a plus

APPLICATIONS OPEN! 2022 BSOS Summer Research Initiative

The Summer Research Initiative (SRI) was created in 1999 by the Office of the Dean in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS). The program is designed to encourage and enhance the diversity of scholars working in the social and behavioral science fields. In that spirit, we are interested in receiving applications to the program from a broad spectrum of students, especially African Americans, Hispanic/Latino/a/LatinX students, American Indian/Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, as well as all students with research interests related to diverse communities. We are most interested in students who plan to pursue doctoral degrees in the behavioral and social sciences.

The program provides rising juniors and seniors with an 8-week intensive experience to develop research skills, learn about doctoral training, and increase graduate training readiness. Departments involved in the SRI  include African American StudiesAnthropologyCriminology & Criminal JusticeEconomicsGeographical SciencesGovernment & PoliticsHearing & Speech SciencesProgram in Neuroscience and Cognitive SciencePsychology, and Sociology

The goals of the SRI are to:

  • Increase the knowledge of, and interest in, doctoral-level training in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences;
  • Provide rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn about graduate studies and the range of research and scholarship in the social, behavioral and economic sciences at the University of Maryland;
  • Provide a laboratory experience that enhances basic research knowledge and skills;
  • Provide lectures, workshops, didactic exchanges, and other programming to enhance students' knowledge of the graduate application process, negotiating the academic rigors and professional and personal challenges encountered in graduate school, and developing career paths in social, behavioral and economic sciences; and,
  • Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for students to advance their training in the social, behavioral and economic sciences

The SRI is part of the UMD’s College of Behavioral and Social Science’s long-standing commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences. According to 2016 data from the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, the university ranks 12th in the country in the number of graduate and professional degrees awarded and 28th in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to underrepresented minority students. The Summer Research Initiative is an integral part of our efforts.

The 2022 BSOS SRI will be an in-person experience. We are excited to once again host students on our campus and deliver an engaging research experience. Hip Hop History and Social Justice Winter Course (AASP 498E)

The course AASP 498E encourages students to critically explore Hip Hop Culture. This course utilizes Hip Hop Culture as a point of departure to examine and dissect various social, historical and geopolitical issues that impact people of color around the world. The course is taught from a social-justice oriented approach that challenges students to be solutions oriented and to step outside of their comfort zones. AASP 498E is riddled with Black history, social justice issues, media literacy and critical thought.


Professor Solomon Comissiong is a renowned Hip Hop historian, author, independent journalist, social activist and scholar.





 

Recruiting Ph.D. student Fall 2022 – Digital Cartography and Data Visualization applied to social and health disparities, University of Connecticut

We invite applications for a PhD-level graduate student based at the Department of Geography and Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (InCHIP), University of Connecticut (UConn)-Storrs. The PhD student is expected to have interest and foundational skills in data visualization and digital cartography skills using GIS software packages (QGIS, ArcGIS/Pro), statistical analysis (R, SPSS), and programming languages (Python). The student will apply these data analytic skills to research projects on understanding the impact of social inequities and injustices such as racial and class discrimination, gender biases, and poverty, on health disparities, the disproportionate impact of climate, and overall well-being of BIPOC communities. The student will not only contribute to the ongoing research projects but have ample opportunities to identify related topics for dissertation research and will be mentored and supported in future career goals by an interdisciplinary group of faculties from Geography and InCHIP.

American Geographical Society (AAG) Full and Part-Time Internships

SCHOLAR INTERNSHIP INITIATIVE

The American Geographical Society (AGS) offers a Scholar Internship program throughout the year to undergraduate and graduate students–now virtually any where in the United States! The Scholar Internship is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in spreading geographical awareness through blogging, social media, and mapping. Interns have the opportunity to become involved with many of our unique Initiatives, developing real-world experience in geographic and geospatial areas and strengthening their skills.

Undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in an accredited program and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.2 are eligible to apply. During the Spring and Fall semesters, the internship runs for 15 weeks, with 15 hours per week. The Summer internship runs for 15 weeks with 35 hours per week. The virtual Scholar Internship offers flexible work hours and days, and we encourage students from across the the globe to apply!

*Upon completion of the internship, students will be awarded a scholarship.

                        Webinar: Spatial Monitoring And Assessment Tool for Conservation Monitoring and Intelligence

                        On Thursday, December 9th, from 3:45-5:00 pm, this week's seminar will feature Dr. Drew Cronin, associational curator of International Conservation at the North Carolina Zoo. He will give a talk on Spatial Monitoring And Assessment Tool for Conservation Monitoring and Intelligence. Please see the attached flyer or the text below for connection details and abstract.                         Abstract: In recent years, a wide range of different technologies have been proposed as solutions to many conservation challenges. Often however, these technologies are presented in isolation, developed outside the conservation context, have limited ability to deploy at scale, and are provided with limited support. The freely-available SMART protected area management platform was developed by a consortium of conservation organizations specifically to address these issues. In the ten years since its initial release, SMART has expanded to become the most widely implemented protected area management solution in the world, used in more than 1,000 sites in over 80 countries. The SMART Partnership is also working with several collaborators to embrace new technologies and integrate SMART with other tools to provide a comprehensive suite of technologies and approaches to those working on the front lines of conservation. This talk will give an overview of SMART and demonstrate how it has improved conservation outcomes in numerous sites and across national protected area systems around the world. This session will also discuss the diversity of applications to which SMART is suited, how complementary systems and emerging technologies can be integrated into a single unified platform, and how these tools have supported and empowered staff on the front-lines of conservation.

                        Bio: Dr. Drew Cronin is Associate Curator of International Conservation at the North Carolina Zoo. In this role, he supports the Zoo’s mission to protect wildlife and wild places primarily through support of its conservation projects implementing SMART conservation software across Africa. Before joining the Zoo, Drew was the SMART Partnership Program Manager at Wildlife Conservation Society in New York and an Adjunct Research Scientist in the Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology Department at Columbia University. Prior to WCS, Drew was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program at Drexel University. With an emphasis on primates, central Africa, and technology, his work has primarily focused on the drivers and dynamics of bushmeat hunting, quantifying the impact of human activities on wildlife populations, and leveraging research and technology to more effectively conserve biodiversity. Drew has a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Drexel University, and is a member of the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group, Africa Section and Red Colobus Working Group.

                        American Association of Geographers (AAG) Spring 2022 internships

                        Internships at AAG

                        The AAG seeks interns on a year-round basis for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.

                        Interns participate in most AAG programs and projects such as education, outreach, research, website, publications, or the Annual Meeting. The AAG also arranges for interns to accompany different AAG staff on visits to related organizations or events of interest during the course of their internship. A monthly stipend of $700 is provided and interns are expected to make their own housing and related logistical arrangements. Enrollment in a Geography or closely related program is preferred but not a prerequisite for these opportunities.

                        The compensation range for this position is $59,250 to $98 annually, dependent on skills and experience.

                        Maxar Geospatial Analytical Intern for the 2022

                        Maxar is seeking a Geospatial Analytical Intern for the 2022 summer intern program in the Ypsilanti, MI, or St. Louis, MO.  As the intern, you will support large federal programs providing a variety of geospatial products and services.  We are looking for a team member who has a strong interest in the GIS, Remote Sensing, or GEOINT industry and is ready to integrate into a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

                        What would you be doing?

                        • Perform data extraction and enrichment techniques using satellite imagery and a variety of standard and non-standard data sources
                        • Perform data conversion, conflation, and integration
                        • Perform data analysis and assessment
                        • Use commercial and/or open-source GIS software packages to process, edit, and attribute vector and raster data
                        •  Generate vector data and cartographic mapping products conforming to customer specifications from GIS data layers
                        •  Participate in the development of workflow enhancements to improve production efficiency and quality

                        Minimum Requirements:

                        • Must be a US Citizen
                        • Must be a rising Sophomore or rising Junior, currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline

                        Preferred Skills:

                        • Experience with GIS software packages such as ArcGIS or QGIS
                        • Experience with Remote Sensing software such as ERDAS Imagine or ENVI
                        • Familiarity with spatial data types, data schemas, and associated file formats
                        • Python scripting experience
                        • Experience with Oracle or Postgres databases
                        • Good written and oral communication skills

                        ► Maryland Reading Program (In Person): Mentors work one-on-one with 1st and 2nd grade students who are struggling with reading.
                        Shifts Available: Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m, every week of the semester.

                        ► Maryland Math Program (In Person): Mentors work 1:1 or in small groups with 4th graders who are struggling with math.
                        Shifts Available: Monday through Thursday; 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., every week of the semester.

                        ► Maryland Family Literacy Program (Virtual): Mentors provide 1:1 and small group English language tutoring and conversation practice for local adults.
                        Shifts Available: Wednesday & Thursday; 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. every week of the semester.

                        ► Higher Achievement Middle School Reading & Mentoring Program (In Person): Work with a small group of 5th-8th grade scholars as they engage in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. No experience needed! Training, lesson plans, and activities will be provided.
