Ecological Restoration Workshop


This is an applied course with the goal of teaching students how to run and analyze hydrologic models like restoration professionals do. The course will be hands on with lots of real life examples, and I don't think anyone will regret coming who is remotely interested. Also, lunch will be provided! Maryland Parent & Family Association Student Scholarship Awards

SCHOLARSHIPS OF UP TO $2,000 AVAILABLE FOR 2019-2020!

Applications are being accepted for the Maryland Parent & Family Association Student Scholarship Awards. The scholarships provide assistance to current undergraduate students in good standing who may be unable to continue their education at the University due to extenuating personal or family financial circumstances. A minimum of 15 scholarships will be awarded for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Invitation: Immigrant Stories


Bright Futures Scholarship


The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,000 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships with non-profit organizations and government agencies.  

The Bright Futures application for summer 2019 is now open!

DEADLINE: Monday, April 22, 2019 at 5 p.m.

Eligible Candidates 
All registered University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students returning to campus for the fall 2019 semester, who have an internship for summer 2019, are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors (May 2019 & August 2019) are not eligible. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors graduating in December 2019 and to those who have not previously received an award.  In order for a student's internship to qualify for funding support, it must satisfy the following criteria:
  • Unpaid on-campus or off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency
  • Offered during the summer and completed by Friday, August 23, 2019
  • Supervised by a professional in the organization

Submission Deadline: Monday, April 22 at 5 p.m.

About the speaker: Dr. Deb Niemeier is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and professor in the School of Education and Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of California at Davis. She is also a member of the graduate faculty in computer science, geography, sociology, and atmospheric science. Her primary research interest has been on developing highly accurate, accessible processes for emissions modeling and travel behavior models that can be used in the public sector, particularly the identification and modeling of environmental health disparities and those leading to improved understanding of formal and informal governance processes in urban and transportation planning. She is interested in emergent properties or characteristics that give rise to inequitable outcomes, particularly those associated with climate change.

Fishlinger Family Fund Scholarship

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is currently looking to award the Fishlinger Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to provide an annual, merit-based scholarship to a high achieving BSOS undergraduate student who has overcome medical or personal hardships. This scholarship is renewable through the recipient's senior year, provided they maintain their good academic standing (3.2 GPA or higher). The 2019-20 academic year award for this scholarship is: $10,000 
 
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:
  • Currently enrolled BSOS undergraduate student. Preference given to rising sophomores, majoring in Government & Politics, but all BSOS majors may apply.
  • Exhibit exemplary academic standing, as evidenced by a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Exhibit financial need, as evidenced by submission of Financial Aid Offer Statement and Personal Statement of Financial Need.

Mapping for Diplomacy Event

The United States Diplomacy Center has partnered with MapGive to host a mapathon on April 5 2019, from 1-4pm in the Diplomacy Center pavilion located in the State Department. The purpose of the mapathon is to create necessary digital map data for humanitarian and development causes, including combating HIV/AIDS, humanitarian assistance, and public diplomacy. Participants will simultaneously learn about the impact of open mapping and learn how to use satellite imagery to create map data through the OpenStreetMap platform.

The event will include keynote remarks from State Department officials, a panel of experts, a mapping tutorial, and lightning talks. Speakers include Allan Mustard, Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Lee Schwartz, Geographer of the United States, and leaders from Secondary Cities, USAID, and PEPFAR.

Please bring a laptop to participate in the mapping. No prior experience with mapping is required! Light refreshments provided, provided by our sponsor MapBox.

“The War in Yemen: Roots and Consequences”
Charles Schmitz, Professor of Geography, Towson University

Charles Schmitz is professor of Geography at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland where he has taught since 1999.  Dr. Schmitz is a specialist on the Middle East and Yemen.  He began his academic career as a Fulbright Scholar and American Institute for Yemeni Studies Fellow in Yemen in the early 1990’s.  Dr. Schmitz’ current research interests include the political economy of development in Yemen, international law and the counter terror policy, international governance and failing states, and the sociology of contemporary Yemeni society.
Dr. Schmitz has been involved in the defense cases of several Yemeni detainees in Guantanamo, the most prominent of which was the case of Salim Hamdan who won a Supreme Court case against Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in 2006.  Dr. Schmitz served as the translator and country consultant for the Hamdan defense team in the Office of Military Commissions from 2004 until 2009. Read more.

BranchOUT! LGBTQ+ Speed Mentoring Event

Responsibilities:Assists in planning organizing, and conducting research projects involving the compilation, evaluation, and interpretation of geographical and statistical information on regions, metropolitan areas, and locales within the scope of work assigned.
Tabulates and prepares data obtained from internal and external files for use in analyzing population patterns and ways of representing them.
Assists in reviewing official demographic and geographic data for trends, internal consistency, and relationship to project activities.
Prepares files and maps using GIS software to identify potential data production flaws, provides assistance on developing and implementing quality assurance plans for structure points, geocoding, and geospatial data update operations.
Prepares memoranda and assists in preparation of reports on delineation and uses of statistical areas.

The Undocumented Student Program (USP) is getting ready to celebrate our 1st Immigrant Resilience Week taking place April 22-26th. During the week we will be hosting the 3rd annual Dream Gala. Given that this is a new program we would like your support with encouraging folks to attend events, volunteering, and or sponsoring a table for your students to attend the Dream Gala. In addition to the Dream Gala, this year's schedule also includes a documentary screening and student panel, a pathway to citizenship workshop in collaboration with AAPI heritage month and an artivism and joy workshop.

HIP Consult Internship

The consulting firm HIP Consult is recruiting GIS Interns to help create vector GIS data for our infrastructure mapping and analytics project, InfraNav. This is generally both a challenging and rewarding internship, as interns work alongside more experienced members of the team and are regularly exposed to other aspects of the business.They are looking for excellent problem-solvers who are looking to expand open-source GIS skills. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. We hire on a rolling basis but we’re primarily recruiting for Summer 2019. Interns are compensated at an hourly rate.

Gender, Finance, and Power Panel

On March 12th, at 4:00pm in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center, the Department of Women's Studies will host the Gender, Finance, and Power Panel. Featured speakers will cover topics ranging from personal wealth management, entrepreneurship, and navigating the world of business.
