UI/UX and Front-end Developer (Location: Flexible)

UI/UX and Front-end Developer (Location: Flexible)

NatureServe is seeking to hire a user interface, user experience designer and front-end software engineer to design and implement map-centric web applications using JavaScript and Esri ArcGIS technologies. Candidates with React JS development experience are strongly preferred, though we will consider all individuals that can demonstrate their ability to learn quickly.

NatureServe's software engineers work on a mixture of new and existing projects. Some of the applications we build allow scientists to collect and manage information about rare and endangered species and ecosystems. Other applications provide conservation professionals and planners with tools to analyze this data and help guide their conservation decisions. Finally, we build interactive web applications that present this information to the public to educate them on the natural world that surrounds them, allowing them to explore the challenges that face it and discover the ways in which they can help. Most of these projects have a very heavy focus on geospatial data and are increasingly being built using AWS and Azure cloud technologies. If you are not yet an expert on interactive, web-based mapping applications, this position should provide opportunities to learn!

A Conversation about Truth, History and the 1619 Project

Tuesday, May 3, 2022 6:30 pm-8:00 pm

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Kay Theatre , The University of Maryland, College Park

For her final Dean’s Lecture Series as dean of UMD’s College of Arts and Humanities, Bonnie Thornton Dill will be in conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, the creator of the groundbreaking 1619 Project, published by The New York Times Magazine. An exploration of the legacy of slavery starting with the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to Virginia in 1619, the project reframes U.S. history by “placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.” Thornton Dill and Hannah-Jones will discuss the hard but essential work of engaging the public to reflect on history—and the power of such efforts to illuminate the present. Hannah-Jones has spent her career investigating racial inequality and injustice. In 2020 she was inducted into the Society of American Historians, and in 2021 she was named a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She also serves as the inaugural Knight Chair in Race and Journalism at Howard University, where she is founding the Center for Journalism and Democracy. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A.

The event is free and open to students, staff, faculty and the community with limited availability.

SEDS@UMD General Business Meeting

SEDS@UMD is a club dedicated to fostering interest in space through technical projects and hosting space talks. We have two upcoming events with speakers from industry, and we would love for you all to attend!

On April 28th at 6:45 PM in EGR1108, we will be hosting a talk by Ms. Therese Jones, Senior Director of Policy at Satellite Industry Association, on the development of Space Policy. On May 5th at 6:30 PM in EGR1108, Mr. William Kramer will be presenting on space sustainability and the environmental effects of space exploitation. Both of these talks will be a great opportunity for students to interact with the space industry and build a stronger understanding of how the industry is growing. We plan to have pizza and refreshments at both of these events, so I hope everyone will come out to hear our speakers. I've added an overview for each of the talks below!

Ms. Therese Jones

Title: Navigating government space policy—how laws, regulation, and policy are made in concert with the private sector

Description: Ever wonder who decides who or what is allowed to be launched into space?  How the long-term space environment should be preserved from debris? Whether Steve Carrell accurately portrays the Space Force? This talk will give a basic overview of how non-governmental actors navigate U.S. government space policy, and touch on some of the more hot space policy topics of today, including those surrounding space debris, billionaires in space, the Space Force, remote sensing and its impact on government decision-making, and how space is impacting and impacted by the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. This talk will also give a brief crash course on how to get into the space industry for those interested.

Mr. William Kramer

Description: A foreseeable issue with exploitation of the Moon, Mars, and beyond is the potential for our actions to adversely affect extraterrestrial environments, yet there are no regulations or procedures for assessing environmental impact -- it is not part of the space development conversation. Without impact analyses, we should expect the same kinds of environmental harm we have witnessed here on Earth. This presentation will describe the problem and how it may affect future uses and will propose a potential solution.

SEDS@UMD hopes to see you at one of these events! Any questions or comments may be directed to our email: Seds@umd.edu

There are several levels of clearance (Public Trust, Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret), and the different types of clearance provide the individual varying levels of accessibility to sensitive information.

MapGive & MapUganda Mapathon Registration, Wed, Apr 13, 2022 at 9:00 AM ET | Eventbrite

The U.S. Department of State's MapGive will be hosting a "mapathon" event with its Participatory Mapping Partnership Africa Hub as part of our public diplomacy initiative to engage individuals to map in support of humanitarian and development efforts - it will occur on April 13th from 09:00-11:00 am Eastern Time/ 06:00-08:00 Pacific Time / 16:00-18:00 pm East Africa Time.

This event is a collaboration with MapUganda, Digital Data Divide, the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and various YouthMappers chapters, to bring people together worldwide to map communities affected by flooding in Uganda.

If you are a high school or university student, a potential collaborator, or an interested individual, we invite you to join and to aid in this effort! No experience is required.

All participants have the option to be briefly trained in open mapping at the start of the event to create critical geospatial data, and will learn from experts about the power of open data and the importance of public participation. More advanced mappers will have the opportunity to use their skills towards intermediate mapping level needs. The data created from this effort will be open-source and then used to support local development and humanitarian aid efforts in the region.
