Tim  -- Funded, Virtual Summer NSF Undergraduates and Teachers Program Announcement Citizen Science GIS NSF REU/RET Site Overview: This summer virtually through Citizen Science GIS at University of Central Florida, we are pleased to host the fifth year of our National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates & Teachers (REU/RET) Site "Preparing the Next Generation of Scholars through Community GIS and Citizen Science." Our virtual program (due to COVID) offers fully funded summer research experiences for eight undergraduate students and two K-12 teachers. Participants will also be invited to a fully funded ten-day fieldwork experience to Belize in early 2022 as COVID conditions improve.  Program Dates: Virtual from June 1-July 9, 2021. Belize fieldwork, early 2022. Research directions: Work with community partners and mentors from University of Central Florida, George Mason University, University of Belize, Georgia State University, and The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program. Poster Guidelines

• Posters should offer a unified, coherent statement
• Materials should be of professional quality and strive for legibility from a distance of four feet (4')
• Abstracts for each presenter are required and should accompany the posters in/out of the session
• Posters should be appropriate for display on easels and/or to be hung on bulletin boards

Abstract Guidelines

• Include paper title, your name, affiliation, and e-mail address, but not in the body of the abstract.
• Each abstract should not exceed 250 words.
• Abstracts should describe/summarize the presentation's purpose, methods, and conclusions.
• Avoid bulleted lists, underlining, boldface type, italics, subscripts, or superscripts.
• Transmit your research results clearly and concisely, avoiding jargon.
• All abbreviations should be spelled out in the abstract text.
• Keywords can be compound, e.g. "political geography." Separate keywords with commas.
• Keywords should generally be nouns rather than adjectives.

Paper presentations generally are limited to 20 minutes each, with questions and answers reserved until the end of the session

to help ensure that each presenter has equal time, and in order to facilitate an inclusive and wide-ranging discussion.

AAG Internship

The AAG is recruiting specifically for an intern who has both GIS and computer programming skills and experience, to work closely with one of our staff members on an NSF-funded grant for a Geospatial Virtual Data Enclave (GVDE).


We welcome applications from interested students, who can offer approx. 25 - 30 hours a week to the AAG for the fall semester.

MS in GIS at the University at Albany

The MS in GIS at the University at Albany is still considering applications for the Fall 2019 semester.

The Master of Science in Geographic Information Science at the University at Albany, State University of New York

The Department of Geography and Planning at the University at Albany has begun offering a Master of Science in Geographic Information Science (MSGIS) and is now accepting applications for the Fall 2018 semester. The 36-credit program is divided into an 18-credit core, a 3-credit capstone course, and 15 credits of electives. Our GIS faculty members include 4 experts in their respective fields:

·         Dr. Alexander Buyantuev--remote sensing technology and its application to environmental issues,

·         Dr. Shiguo Jiang, the use of spatial statistics for environmental analysis,

Research Opportunity at UCF

This summer at the University of Central Florida, we are pleased to host the fourth year of our National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site "Preparing the Next Generation of Scholars through Community GIS and Citizen Science." Our program offers fully funded summer research experiences for undergraduate students in Belize and Orlando for 7 weeks. The program is open to all U.S. students and runs June 3 – July 18, 2019. We are interdisciplinary in nature emphasizing community GIS, citizen science, drones and spatial storytelling through mixed methods.

More about our REU Site: This year's research direction is focused on mapping coastal and island resiliency with drones and spatial storytelling. Students will work with community partners and mentors from University of Central Florida, University of Belize, The Hopkins Belize Village Council, and The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program.

Compensation: Each REU student will receive a competitive funding package, including a $3500 research stipend, a meal allowance, free shared housing in Belize and Orlando, up to $750 in travel support to/from the REU Site, up to $750 for post-REU conference travel, and 2 research methods books.

What the Talent Pool Intern doesThe Talent Pool team (part of the Affiliation & Engagement group) manages programs related to education, student programs, and career services. AGU's Talent Pool team works to build the next generation of Earth and space scientists while also increasing our understanding of the barriers to gender and ethnic diversity and involvement within these scientific fields.
The Talent Pool Intern will work closely with the Director for Talent Pool, the Higher Education Manager, and the Student and Diversity Program Manager and other AGU staff.

* Data entry and analysis of Talent Pool programs, including the Virtual Poster Showcase, student travel and research grants, and programs associated with AGU conferences.

* Tasks will include quality control of the data as well as database management. Ability to apply basic statistical analysis and present data to internal staff is also expected.

* The internship provides an opportunity to learn some of the behind-the-scenes processes of planning events at large scientific conferences, communicate to the membership via monthly newsletters, and gain knowledge about current science education, diversity, and career issues along with program management experience.

What the Talent Pool Intern brings to the team* Undergraduate student, a graduate student, or a recent graduate. Preferred majors include Earth or space sciences or an allied physical or natural science.
* Must be well-organized and skilled at prioritizing and managing multiple tasks and should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Experience, poise, and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with AGU staff, volunteers, and members is also required.
* Must be willing to relocate to Washington DC area for the internship at own expense.

Student and Faculty presenters sought for AAG 2019 Annual Meeting sessions focused on Undergraduate Geography Education

The Undergraduate Geography Experience: Students and Professors Share their Perspectives 

Lightning Paper Session Sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Affinity Group, Community College Affinity Group, and Geography Education Specialty Group

Curious as to how your geography undergrad program and department compares to others? How your experience is similar (or not) to your fellow undergrad geography colleagues across the country (or in other parts of the world)? Consider presenting about your school and department in this lightning paper session. We are seeking both undergraduate geographers and geography faculty to share your experience and perspective about your home geography departments and programs as a way to understand, compare, and contrast the undergraduate geography experience.

Undergraduates are the fastest growing membership category of the American Association of Geographers with 54% growth from 2016 to 2017 and over 500 undergraduate students attending the 2018 AAG Annual Meeting. Undergraduate geographers are the next generation to lead our discipline in not only academia, but in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Understanding the undergraduate geography experience and how it varies between different types of programs can provide insight into: 1) how departments can adapt and evolve to recruit and retain undergraduate majors, 2) how students currently engage or wish to engage with their geography departments and programs, 3) the post-secondary training and experiences currently offered to young geographers, and 4) how and why undergraduate geographers choose whether or not to pursue graduate study in the discipline. In this session, both professors and undergraduates will give brief presentations about their undergraduate geography program experience from their perspectives as educators and students in different university geography programs.

Presenters will be provided with a series of questions to help guide the content for their presentations (as well as guidelines to help draft their abstracts). Presentations will be followed by a group discussion with the goal of sharing ideas to improve the undergraduate geography experience, increase undergraduate geography student recruitment and retention, and promote networking among undergraduates as well as between undergraduates and professors.

Undergraduate Geographers - We especially want to hear and learn from you! If you haven't made a conference presentation before, consider this a great opportunity to give a brief presentation on something you are already very familiar with - your own program and department! This will be an engaging and interesting session (as well as a very friendly one!) and we would love for you to be a part of it.

Faculty - Come share your perspective and learn from what other departments are doing. Our hope is that all participants will glean some information and ideas to continue to improve undergraduate geography education.

Your 250 word abstract: Given that this session is quite different from other paper sessions, the abstracts will be different as well. The goal for this abstract is to provide context to the undergraduate geography program perspective you will be providing. Please introduce and describe the program you will be talking about and your role in it - include the following:

• Size of your school (undergrad enrollment estimate)
• Location of your school (city/state/country)
• # of undergraduate students in your program/department (approximate number)
• # of faculty in your undergraduate program/department (approximate number)
• Degrees, Majors/Minors, Certificates available for undergraduates in your program
• Your role:
• If a student, state what year/place in the program and your particular area of emphasis or track within geography (if applicable)
• If faculty/staff, state what undergraduate courses you teach, and/or other relevant undergraduate program roles like student advising, student group leadership, etc.
• Any other information to help describe / provide context for your program, your role/experience and/or particular topics you will discuss
• And finally, why you are interested in this session / what you would like to learn from it

Upon submitting your abstract, please forward your abstract submission confirmation to cluebbering@aag.org to be added to the session. Make sure it is for a Lightning Paper, not just a regular Paper. The number of presenters will help determine the length of time for each presentation, but presentations will be 5 minutes at a minimum. We will follow up with more information as the sessions develop.

Funded Ph.D Positions at William and Mary

The AidData research lab at William and Mary (www.aiddata.org) invites applications for up to three funded doctoral research positions, hosted within the Department of Applied Science.  An annual stipend, tuition, recreation fees and health insurance are provided. Prospective students will work closely with the AidData Research and Evaluation Unit in support of at least one of two key institutional objectives - GIE and GEO.  The AidData-GEO initiative (www.geoquery.org) seeks to provide novel types of spatial data of high relevance to the international development community using high performance computation and machine learning.  The AidData-GIE initiative (www.aiddata.org/gie) focuses on the nexus of micro-econometric and GIScience methods to provide impact evaluations to the development community.  

We seek highly self-motivated researchers who desire to help bridge the gap between basic research leveraging spatial data and applied international development questions.  Prospective students should have a strong knowledge of spatial data manipulation in Python or R, spatial data collection, spatial analytics and related areas.  We anticipate the most successful candidates will have past experience using spatial or micro-economic analysis techniques (AidData-GIE), or machine learning techniques (AidData-GEO).

AAG Marble-Boyle Undergraduate Achievement Award

The AAG Marble-Boyle Undergraduate Achievement Awards in Geographic Science aims to recognize excellence in academic performance by undergraduate students from the U.S. and Canada who are putting forth a strong effort to bridge geographic science and computer science. Each Marble-Boyle award consists of a cash prize of $1,000, a $200 credit for books published by Esri Press, and a certificate of recognition.
