The Weight of Honor Film Screening

Join Veteran Student Life, in partnership with the George Washington University Military & Veteran Services, in a film screening of THE WEIGHT OF HONOR — the first comprehensive documentary to chronicle the lives of families caring for their catastrophically wounded returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The event will be held inside the Colony Ballroom on the STAMP second floor. Doors will open at 6 pm. This event is public and open to all — especially students interested in care and public health.

The film follows the arc of what happens when some of America's best and strongest volunteer to protect our nation, but return home physically and emotionally broken and disillusioned. What happens when they return is not only a personal journey but also that of their family caregivers who have no training other than the love for their wounded.

A panel discussion will follow the screening with the documentary's director, Stephanie Seldin Howard, and special guest, Timothy Brown—President of Georgetown University's Student Veteran Association and U.S. Marine Corps Veteran. Mr. Brown will speak on his experience with rehabilitation after his wounds sustained in combat. The panel discussion will be chaired by our very own Director of STAMP, Dr. Marsha Guenzler-Stevens.

MAD-AAG 2019 Paper and Poster Submissions

MAD-AAG 2019 invites paper and poster submissions that highlight the range of people, places, data sources, and creative productions with which MAD Community members engage. The MAD Community is a bustling, lively association, and the annual MAD-AAG Conference invites abstract submissions that highlight the diverse work by our members.

All papers and posters on all topics are welcome!

We also invite undergraduate and graduate paper and poster submissions for the 6th annual MAGMA (MAD's Annual Geography Meritorious Award) Competition. In parallel to MAGMA, graduate students can submit their research for the AAG Council Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper at a Regional Meeting, ($1000 award to be used to attend the AAG in April).

In addition to welcoming professional and university-college colleagues, we encourage sessions organized by & oriented toward geographers in secondary education. MAD also encourages contingent instructors to use this event for networking, sharing, and gaining additional supportive resources.

As the MAD Region is unique in its higher proportion of professional geographers relative to the other AAG-Divisions, the MAD-Annual Conference is a particularly vital, regional venue to network and highlight key developments taking place in the discipline outside academia.

ABSTRACTS, PANEL SESSIONS, and STUDENT AWARD PAPER SUBMISSION (extended) DEADLINE: Sunday, November 10, 2019

Have you written a great research paper lately for class or other work? Consider submitting to present it (or enter the paper competition!) at this year's Mid-Atlantic Division AAG Conference! The Conference will be Nov 15th and the deadline to apply is Nov 10th. Email ahall2@umd.edu if you have any questions!

If you haven't RSVPed for the event yet, you can still do so here!

Esri Lecture - Census

Deirdre Dalpiaz Bishop is the Chief of the Geography Division at the U.S. Census Bureau. In that role, she leads a team of over 200 employees focused on the development of a national geospatial database that will support the 2020 Census and the bureau's ongoing surveys.
In this presentation, Ms. Bishop will discuss the role that GIS is playing in facilitating the 2020 Census and programs across the Geography Division and agency. She will share her insights on being the leader of a GIS program and how it can support leadership and department-wide initiatives at the federal level. And Ms. Bishop will talk about interaction between federal agencies and state and local governments and the critical role these relationships play.
Her presentation will be followed by engagement with attendees and a tech update on the Esri Redistricting app. The constitutionally mandated redistricting process is dependent on decennial census data and will be undertaken by the states beginning next year. Esri's redistricting solution provides an agile platform for use in developing and refining district boundaries that align with legal requirements and historical precedents.
