MSGIC Emerging Professionals Industry Talks Series & Panel


The Emerging Professional Working Group has launched the 2021 Industry Talks Series. This event consists of a series of interviews with young professionals working in a variety of disciplines in the geospatial industry. This series is intended as an opportunity for students and emerging professionals to learn about our presenters' experiences entering the workforce and the skills and tips they've acquired along the way. 


The 2021 Industry Professional Talks will include a series of interviews with the panelists posted on the MSGIC website during the week of April 19th - 23nd, followed by an opportunity to engage the presenters directly at a virtual panel on April 28th. Interviews will be available here:

GEOG398X: Commercial Space Startups and Entrepreneurship 
Dr. Hannah Kerner
Students will be introduced to the commercial "newspace" industry as it relates to startup companies working on products and services related to geospatial technologies. Lectures will include guest speakers from newspace companies and investors. In addition, students will learn about how to develop a startup idea, stages of investment, etc. culminating in their own space-related startup pitch.

GEOG298C: Urban Futures: Planning for a Changing Climate
Dr. Keith Yearwood
How are the cities of the world adapting to or planning to adapt to climate change? This course focuses on urban areas and the environment, specifically how anthropogenic factors have impacted the environment and how the environment has responded. The aim is to discover how associated and concomitant problems owing to the development and use of the planets resources are created and the various approaches to reduce the negative impacts of these problems through a variety of approaches.

GEOG130: Development Geography: Environmental & Social Justice (Scholarship in Practice Gen Ed!)
Prof. Ipsita Kumar
The geography of economic, social, and environmental well-being and inequality. The course will provide an integrated perspective on the causes, interconnections, and consequences across time and space of, among others, globalization, climate change, poverty, employment, migration and urban growth, agricultural productivity, rural development, policies and international trade. Portraits of selected countries and regions will be developed.

Survey of landform types and role of processes in their generation. Frequency of occurrence and implications for land utilization. Emphasis on coastal, fluvial, and glacial landforms in different environmental settings. Landform regions of Maryland.

Cartographer Jobs with NOAA available!

 Cartographer Jobs with NOAA available! Great option for a graduating senior/recent grad! 

Three Cartographer positions will open up on USA Jobs on Friday, April 16 in the Office of Coast Survey's Marine Chart Division at NOAA.  We are recruiting these positions under both MAP and DE hiring authorities, please see the descriptions in the announcements to see which you qualify for.  

In order to qualify for the cartographer job series, you must have a degree in cartography or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). 

These are great jobs!  Coast Survey is the nation’s nautical chart-maker. We are responsible for updating charts, surveying the seafloor, responding to maritime emergencies, and searching for underwater obstructions that pose a danger to navigation.  Since what we do is very specialized, we will teach you what you need to know in training classes and on the job as long as you come in with a strong foundation in physical geography and geographic information systems (and/or any of the related coursework listed above) and are ready to learn.

Funded, Virtual Summer NSF Undergraduates and Teachers Program Announcement

Citizen Science GIS NSF REU/RET Site Overview: This summer virtually through Citizen Science GIS at University of Central Florida, we are pleased to host the fifth year of our National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates & Teachers (REU/RET) Site "Preparing the Next Generation of Scholars through Community GIS and Citizen Science." Our virtual program (due to COVID) offers fully funded summer research experiences for eight undergraduate students and two K-12 teachers. Participants will also be invited to a fully funded ten-day fieldwork experience to Belize in early 2022 as COVID conditions improve. 

Program Dates: Virtual from June 1-July 9, 2021. Belize fieldwork, early 2022.

3/31 Zoom session: Join us from 4-5 pm EST on Zoom to ask questions/learn more about the program with our REU/RET faculty. Register at: tinyurl.com/52zjdvzk.

Eligibility requirements: As an NSF-funded program, open to all U.S. citizens and permanent residents. We are interdisciplinary emphasizing community geography, community GIS, and citizen science through mixed methods, including sketch mapping, mobile mapping applications, focus groups, in-depth interviews, GIS, spatial analysis, and drones. Since 2016, over 70% of participants have been from underrepresented groups in STEM, and from several disciplines including geography, GIS, environmental studies, sociology, anthropology, biology, chemistry, political science, business/economics, education, and more.

Research directions: Work with community partners and mentors from University of Central Florida, George Mason University, University of Belize, Georgia State University, and The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program. Research Direction 1: Leveraging community geography & GIS to map disparities in flooding. Research Direction 2: Leveraging community geography & GIS to reduce waste and prevent marine debris.

Funding: $4200 research stipend, $750 for post-REU conference travel or industry visits, research methods books, technology support, and all expenses covered for 2022 Belize fieldwork.

Rachel Moore Marks,  GEOG '16 |  Natural Resource Planner, Chesapeake and Coastal Service of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:  Rachel obtained a BS in Environmental Science and Policy with a focus in Wildlife Ecology and Management from University of Maryland (UMD) in 2010.  She then received a Master's Certificate in Geospatial Information Science (GIS) and a Master's Degree in Physical Geography from the Department of Geographical Sciences in 2011 and 2016 respectively. Her educational and professional background has focused on a combination of GIS, remote sensing, wildlife and forest ecology, and ecological modeling. Since 2016, she has worked as a Natural Resource Planner with the Chesapeake and Coastal Service of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.  She uses her specialization in ecology, geospatial analysis, and ecological modeling to create statewide spatial data, web maps, and interactive web-based decision support tools for use by state, federal, non-profit, and private conservation and restoration partners in natural resource management, project funding, and policy creation.

In my work for the Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems office at NASA I have moved into support science where I provide various types of support for the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) including geographical and data management, assistance in developing the ABoVE Science Cloud needs and requirements, and even cartographic, GIS, web mapping and data display support. I also support the airborne campaign flights and fly with the NASA aircraft from time to time.

Steps to Participate in Intern For a Day, Lite: 

  1. Enroll in and complete this 20-minute asynchronous online orientation between Monday, March 1 and Monday, March 22, 2021 to learn about the program and best practices to conduct an informational interview. It is required to complete the orientation in order to have access to the application.

  2. You will receive the Intern for a Day Lite application on Tuesday, March 23 and you will rank the top 8 professionals you're most interested in talking to through an informational interview.

  3. After you submit your application by the deadline of Sunday, March 28, University Career Center staff members will begin matching students with professionals.

  4. You will be notified of your match by early April 2021!
