BSOS Intern For A Day Lite-Spring 2021 edition!

 


The University Career Center is excited to share that the list of 270+ professionals for Intern for a Day Lite is now available on go.umd.edu/ifad. Technically 1,100 virtual informational interviews could occur between professionals and students!!!  This is a fantastic opportunity for those of you who are just starting to explore career options or who are researching organizations for internship/job options.

I serve as the Staff Geographer for the Operational Support Staff for USDA Wildlife Services. I assist program leads in creating and maintaining geospatial applications using Esri software and additional GIS technologies. I am also the WS system administrator for the Esri APHIS GIS Portal where I manage user roles and permissions.

I am a Scientist at NASA studying urbanization from satellite imagery. I have an MA and PhD from UMD Geography. I used to lead the education and public outreach efforts in the earth sciences division at Goddard space flight center so I can talk about careers in stem fieldscareers at NASA in earth sciences and a number of other related geosciences fields. Internship opportunities at gsfc etc.

Contractor for NASA Senior Support Scientist

My scientific research interests are in landscape ecology and disturbance mapping within the boreal forests of North America. I utilize GIS and Remote Sensing to understand aspects of the disturbance regime, most recently researching the influence of a changing fire frequency on carbon consumption in Alaskan black spruce forests.

In my work for the Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems office at NASA I have moved into support science where I provide various types of support for the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) including geographical and data management, assistance in developing the ABoVE Science Cloud needs and requirements, and even cartographic, GIS, web mapping and data display support. I also support the airborne campaign flights and fly with the NASA aircraft from time to time.

Steps to Participate in Intern For a Day, Lite: 

  1. Enroll in and complete this 20-minute asynchronous online orientation between Monday, March 1 and Monday, March 22, 2021 to learn about the program and best practices to conduct an informational interview. It is required to complete the orientation in order to have access to the application.

  2. You will receive the Intern for a Day Lite application on Tuesday, March 23 and you will rank the top 8 professionals you're most interested in talking to through an informational interview.

  3. After you submit your application by the deadline of Sunday, March 28, University Career Center staff members will begin matching students with professionals.

  4. You will be notified of your match by early April 2021!
