The Global Land Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) laboratory in the Department of Geographical
Sciences at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce an internship opportunity for summer 2021. Interns will work full-time alongside experienced remote sensing scientists to investigate land cover and land use extent and change using Earth observation imagery. All members of the lab regularly collaborate and help to facilitate each other’s work, making this an excellent way to learn methods for land cover and land use mapping and analysis, as well as to connect with scientists in the field. There will be opportunities for continued engagement with the lab upon completion of the summer internship.

[Remote Sensing] : Two Graduate Assistantships (Master's and/or Doctoral) in GIScience at New Mexico State University

 Dr. Michaela Buenemann from the Department of Geography at New Mexico State University is seeking Master of Applied Geography (MAG) and PhD Geography students broadly interested in remote sensing and/or GIS, predictive modeling, and land system science, to support funded research projects starting in Fall 2021. Funding support will include a monthly stipend, tuition and fees, health insurance, conference travel, and access to computing equipment in the Spatial Applications Research Center (SpARC) at New Mexico State University. The contracts will be renewable annually based on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

One master's student is sought to support a Natural Resources Conservation Service project aimed at developing a geospatial framework for mapping inactive acequias (communal irrigation ditches). The student should have an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in geography, computer science, or a related discipline, and experience in spatial analysis, predictive modeling, and programming (e.g., R or Python).

One master's or doctoral student is sought to support a Natural Resources Conservation Service project aimed at developing a geospatial framework for monitoring and assessing land cover (especially mesquite) dynamics in rangelands. The student should have an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in geography, environmental science, or a related discipline, and experience in remote sensing and dryland ecology.

Funded students will join an interdisciplinary team working to enhance our understanding of human-environment systems through mixed-methods research that combines remote sensing, GIS, and quantitative and qualitative methods in physical and human geography. Students should be interested and able to work in this kind of environment, committed to social and environmental justice, and self-motivated. Graduate assistantship in Ecology and Remote Sensing of Tree Heights

 MSc or PhD graduate studies in Ecology and Remote Sensing of Tree Heights 

The Savanna lab (https://savannalab.nmsu.edu/) in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University is seeking applicants for a graduate assistantship.  Candidates broadly interested in dryland ecology and remote sensing, and/or with interests in macroscale patterns in tree physiology and phylogeny are encouraged to apply. We are looking for candidates interested to join a team exploring global patterns and drivers of woody plant height, canopy cover and biomass in water-limited ecosystems using space-borne LiDAR (e.g. GEDI and IceSat-2).  The student will develop an independent research project and publications leading to a dissertation relating to dryland ecosystem structure and function, height, canopy cover and/or biomass estimation, using data from one or more sources including satellite remote sensing, UAV, and field measurements.

 

Required Qualifications: MSc applicants: Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field relating to ecology, geography, remote sensing, earth system science, or related fields. PhD applicants: Master's degree in geography/geospatial analysis, ecology, remote sensing, data analytics or related field. Preference for candidates with experience with analysis of geospatial data and computer programming, strong interest in learning new skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

AAG Internships

Internships at AAG

The AAG seeks interns on a year-round basis for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.

Interns participate in most AAG programs and projects such as education, outreach, research, website, publications, or the Annual Meeting. The AAG also arranges for interns to accompany different AAG staff on visits to related organizations or events of interest during the course of their internship. A monthly stipend of $700 is provided and interns are expected to make their own housing and related logistical arrangements. Enrollment in a Geography or closely related program is preferred but not a prerequisite for these opportunities.

Applied GIS-BikeUMD Internship

Hours: 1-2 a week, flexible scheduling

Hourly Rate: unpaid, course credit possible

Internship Description: The Department of Transportation Services is looking for a motivated student to work with the BikeUMD team to use current data to optimize bike parking on campus. The intern will be responsible for working in the field to:

• Geotag existing bike racks and grade their conditions.
• Geotag locations where bikes are incorrectly parked and gather real-time data during the internship period to help DOTS prioritize areas for new bike parking facilities.

This will involve hands-on work with ArcMap10, which is cutting edge Graphic Information Systems technology. The intern will be responsible for creating and maintaining a geo-coded database at the direction of the Bicycle Program Assistant. A smartphone is required. No previous experience with GIS is required, though it is considered a plus.

Internship Term: March 2 through May 12, 2020. Opportunity to extend in the Fall semester is available.

GIS Spring 2020 Intern position for Graduate Students

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:	The Geographic Information Systems Intern will work closely with the various members of the Community Engagement, Environmental Justice and Health (CEEJH) lab to assist in a wide variety of tasks related to mapping and analyzing environmental health data. Some of the projects that the intern would be working on include: ● Assessing the relationship between the proximity of confined animal feeding operations to well water,  and its effects on mental disabilities and school performance in Delaware ● Examining spatial disparities in the distribution of chicken farms in Mississippi ● Updating analyses on differential burden of environmental hazards near urban gardens in Baltimore ● Mapping food infrastructure within Prince George’s County ● Analyzing data from stationary and mobile air quality monitors
Minimum Qualifications:	The preferred candidate will have intermediate to advanced skills in geospatial analyses (including buffer analysis, cluster analysis, spatial regression, and Moran’s I) in addition to the specified requirements below: ● Currently enrolled graduate student at UMD (masters or PhD) ● Expertise in ArcGIS, R, and other geovisualization programs ● Experience with basic statistics including linear regression ● Ability to use interpolation techniques such as kriging and cokriging

NASA currently hosts over four Petabytes of very high resolution (VHR) data (< 5 m spatial resolution) in high end computing environments. The fine spatial resolution makes it easier to visually interpret features on the ground but can simultaneously confound traditional image classifiers due to spectral heterogeneity in individual features (i.e. hundreds of pixels in an individual field can look spectrally dissimilar even though they are from the same field). We propose to have a student explore using deep learning approaches in the Advanced Data Analytics Platform (a high-end cloud environment hosted at NASA GSFC with GPU cluster) to improve methods for image classification. The results of this work will provide direct feedback to the PI and will afford the student the opportunity to gain experience with both VHR data and high-end computing.

Computer/Software Skills:
Linux/unix operating system; Python; exposure to GPU and/or cloud computing a plus but not required; experience with image processing software is a plus
