Paid Conservation GIS Position

The Land Steward Individual Placement is a paid internship position with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) in Northern Virginia and Charlottesville, VA. Interns will serve with the VOF, other partners, and private landowners to support the open-space easement program across Northern and Central Virginia. The Individual Placements will assist with open-space easement monitoring, digital file organization, database entry while having the opportunity to monitor spaces across the Piedmont Region. Position requires great communication skills and experience with GPS, GIS or Arcview 10.

These internships are meant to serve as a bridge for folks interested in a career in this field to gain hands on experience with conservation professionals.

Join us for The Do Good Institute's first ever Impact-A-Thon! The Do Good Impact-A-Thon aims to inspire UMD students to think critically and creatively about real-world issues through a hackathon-style competition. Participants will form teams of five and be assigned a random issue area that affects the local College Park community. Teams will then have two hours to ideate, prototype, and prepare a pitch for their solution to that issue that will be presented to a panel of expert judges. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams and anyone with any social impact experience is welcome to participate!

With a strong commitment to public service and advocacy, she has experience working in international development, policy, and social science research. Previously, she worked as a Gender and Markets intern at the United Nations Foundation, as well as several NGOs and think tanks. As a Rangel fellow, she intends to join the U.S. Foreign Service as a Public Diplomacy officer. Sarah graduated from the University of Maryland in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and a minor in Nonprofit Leadership and Social Innovation. She speaks Urdu and English and plans to attend Georgetown University for her graduate studies.

Our alumni want to hear from our students!  This will be an engaging session, and we encourage students to ask questions throughout. Bright Futures Scholarship Information 

Application Opens: Monday, April 4th, 2022 

Application Deadline: Monday, May 9th, 2022 at 5PM EST

Supervisor Statement of Agreement Form must be submitted by the supervisor on behalf of the student.

The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,000 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships. Scholarships are generously funded by the Eisen Family, the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, and individual donors through Maryland Giving Day.  

If you are an undergraduate student who has secured an unpaid summer internship with a non-profit organization or government office, you are eligible to apply. Additional eligibility details for summer 2022 internships will be provided at a later date.

Should a student participate in-person at an internship site, then adherence to current state and local COVID-19 directives, and CDC guidelines is required. Also, should such a student elect to continue in-person at the internship, it is done at the student's own risk.

Hampton National Historic Site has an opportunity for a GIS intern this summer. Pay is $17 - $20 per hour. We have GIS geometry for approximately 650 trees from a Cultural Landscape Inventory. There is no need for an AutoCAD conversion. The bulk of the project is reviewing and formatting an Excel table, bringing the table into ArcGIS Pro, and joining that table with the existing GIS geometry.

Citizen Science GIS NSF REU/RET Site Overview: This summer virtually through Citizen Science GIS at University of Central Florida, we are pleased to host the 6th year of our National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates & Teachers (REU/RET) Site "Preparing the Next Generation of Scholars through Community GIS and Citizen Science." Our in-person program offers fully funded summer research experiences for eight undergraduate students and four K-12 teachers. Participants will be in both Orlando and Belize for the summer as part of the program.

Accessibility statement: Our NSF REU/RET Site and learning community is committed to including and supporting students and teachers with identities that are commonly underrepresented in the field sciences. Specifically, program faculty and staff have experience in supporting and mentoring students with disabilities, and are proud to partner with the International Association for Geoscience Diversity (www.theiagd.org) in this effort.

Online Summer Course on Hip Hop History, Black Studies and Social Justice Issues

 

 
The course AASP 498E encourages students to critically explore Hip Hop Culture. This course utilizes Hip Hop Culture as a point of departure to examine and dissect various social, historical and geopolitical issues that impact people of color around the world. The course is taught from a social-justice oriented approach that challenges students to be solutions oriented and to step outside of their comfort zones. AASP 498E is riddled with Black history, social justice issues, media literacy and critical thought.

Professor Solomon Comissiong is a renowned Hip Hop historian, author, independent journalist, social activist and scholar.

ELIGIBILITY: For the Marshall, Gates, Churchill, and Mitchell programs, you must be a US citizen; Permanent residents and DACA students are eligible for Rhodes Scholarships; you must be a current Junior, graduating Senior, or recent graduate; a GPA of 3.7 or significantly higher is required for Marshall, and strongly recommended for all other programs. UMD Nomination is REQUIRED for all programs, except for the Gates-Cambridge Scholarship.

 The Fishlinger Family Endowed Scholarship is intended to provide an annual, merit-based scholarship to a high achieving BSOS undergraduate student who has been deeply impacted by personal or medical challenges. This scholarship is renewable through the recipient's senior year, provided they maintain good academic standing (3.2 GPA or higher). The monetary award for the 2022-23 academic year is $12,000.

The Terp Dream Scholarship is intended to provide scholarships to undergraduate first-generation college students who have completed at least one semester at the University of Maryland. This scholarship will provide aid to undergraduate students who also have prevalent financial need. Multiple scholarships will be distributed. The monetary award for these scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year will range between $500 - $1,000.
