Green Corps

Early Application Deadline: January 31st, 2016
Click here to request more information about Green Corps

Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day. At Green Corps, we believe there are actually plenty of solutions to these problems, but what’s lacking is political will on behalf of decision makers.  That’s why right now, what we really need is more Organizers – people who understand the power of public support and know how to mobilize it.

In Green Corps’ yearlong paid program, you’ll get intensive training in the skills you need to make a difference in the world. You’ll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems — climate change, deforestation, water pollution, factory farming and many others — with groups like Sierra Club and Food & Water Watch. And when you graduate from Green Corps, we’ll help you find a career with one of the nation’s leading environmental and social change groups.

For more information, read on or visit www.greencorps.org/apply

In your year with Green Corps:

Be trained by the best: Green Corps organizers take part in trainings with leading figures in the environmental and social change movements: people like Adam Ruben, former political director and current board president ofMoveOn.org, and Bill McKibben, author and founder of 350.org.

Learn new skills: Green Corps will teach you to recruit and train activists and volunteers, build coalitions, organize events and gain media coverage, and much more—all of the skills it takes to build public support for our environment.
Gain experience across the country: Green Corps sends organizers to jumpstart campaigns for groups such as Food & Water Watch, Corporate Accountability International, and The Wilderness Society, in major cities to small towns across the country.

Make an impact on today’s environmental challenges: A team of Green Corps organizers helped run a publicity campaign that persuaded Kellogg’s Cereal to pressure its supplier of palm oil to stop destroying tropical forests. Other Green Corps organizers have played critical roles in the retirement of over a dozen coal-fired power plants on the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign.

Get paid! Green Corps organizers earn a salary of $25,500. We also offer a generous benefits package.

Launch your career: Green Corps will help connect you to environmental and progressive groups that are looking for full-time staff to build their organizations and help them create social change and protect our environment.

The Application Process: In the next few months, we‘ll invite 35 college graduates to join Green Corps in 2016 -2017. We’re looking for people who are serious about saving the planet, people who have taken initiative on their campus or community, and people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and work for change over the long haul.

If you think you’re one of those people, visit www.greencorps.org to apply.

Green Corps’ yearlong program begins in August 2016 with Introductory Classroom Training and continues with field placements in multiple locations across the U.S. Candidates must be willing to relocate.

For more information, visit www.greencorps.org or contact Amanda Becker, Recruitment Director of Green Corps at jobs@greencorps.org.

US Dept of Justice - Internship

U.S. Department of Justice

Environment and Natural Resources DivisionNatural Resources SectionVolunteer Student Intern Program

The Natural Resources Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, is seeking a talented, dedicated undergraduate student to assist trial attorneys in our motions based and trial practices during the summer of 2016.

The docket of the Natural Resource Section (NRS) is a kaleidoscope of diverse and challenging resource issues ranging from litigation to protect such national treasures as Florida’s Everglades and the remnant old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest, to protecting the federal interest in the country’s vital water resources, to defense of the public fisc against claims by private property owners for alleged “takings” and by Native Americans for alleged trust breaches. And by virtue of our responsibility for all litigation under the National Environmental Policy Act, we defend the decision-making processes of virtually every federal agency. Recent examples include litigation over agency decisions related to the Gulf oil spill, renewable energy projects, and wildlife management in national parks. Our attorneys practice in both Federal and State courts.

Intern duties may include reviewing administrative records compiled by agencies in defense of actions brought under NEPA to locate information supporting legal arguments, reviewing depositions, performing basic legal research, and drafting internal memoranda. Interns may also have the opportunity to observe court proceedings. The work will require an organized, motivated individual with strong analytical skills and an attention to detail. Demonstrated interest in the law, including natural resource and land use issues is a plus.

Interns will not receive compensation, but can receive course credit. U.S. Citizenship and security clearance are required. Applicants must be in at least their junior year of college as of the Fall of 2016 and be in good standing. Interested students should submit by email a resume, unofficial transcript, and a list of references
(including at least one college instructor). Applicants can submit their information to Clare.Boronow@usdoj.gov. A short cover letter describing your interest is encouraged. Inquiries regarding the undergraduate internship program may be directed to Clare Boronow at the email addresses above. Our offices are located in downtown Washington, DC, near the Chinatown/Gallery Place and Navy Memorial/Archives metro stops.

Applications must be received by January 13, 2016.

Description/Objective (specific student assignment):
Climate change in Arctic and Boreal regions is unfolding faster than anywhere else on Earth, resulting in reduced Arctic sea ice, thawing of permafrost soils, decomposition of long-frozen organic matter, widespread changes to lakes, rivers, coastlines, and alterations of ecosystem structure and function. NASA's Terrestrial Ecology Program is planning a major field campaign, the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE), which will seek a better understanding of the vulnerability and resilience of ecosystems and society to this changing environment. The NASA Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems Office (CCEO) will support the ABoVE field campaign through providing scientific and logistical support to funded scientists. A highly motivated and organized individual working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in an environmental/earth science discipline (or related field) is sought to aid the CCEO's efforts. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and will assist the project team in developing outreach materials for ABoVE. A proficiency with geographic information systems (GIS) is desired, such as ArcGIS Desktop, to aid in the development of geospatial data products to be used by ABoVE.
Expected opportunity outcome (i.e. research, final report, poster presentation, etc.):
