Rachel Moore Marks,  GEOG '16 |  Natural Resource Planner, Chesapeake and Coastal Service of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:  Rachel obtained a BS in Environmental Science and Policy with a focus in Wildlife Ecology and Management from University of Maryland (UMD) in 2010.  She then received a Master's Certificate in Geospatial Information Science (GIS) and a Master's Degree in Physical Geography from the Department of Geographical Sciences in 2011 and 2016 respectively. Her educational and professional background has focused on a combination of GIS, remote sensing, wildlife and forest ecology, and ecological modeling. Since 2016, she has worked as a Natural Resource Planner with the Chesapeake and Coastal Service of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.  She uses her specialization in ecology, geospatial analysis, and ecological modeling to create statewide spatial data, web maps, and interactive web-based decision support tools for use by state, federal, non-profit, and private conservation and restoration partners in natural resource management, project funding, and policy creation.

Introductory Webinar: An Inside Look at how NASA Measures Air Pollution

With the world’s eyes and media coverage turned to recent global changes in air pollution from the economic downturn, we have an upcoming two-part webinar series (May 26 and 28) that will focus on which air quality pollutants can be measured from space, how satellites make these measurements, the do’s and don’ts in interpreting satellite data, and how to download and create your own visualizations.


Would you like to learn how to access and visualize NASA satellite imagery? With the world’s eyes and media coverage turned to recent global changes in air pollution from the economic downturn, this two-part webinar series provides a primer for the novice, and a good refresher course for all others.

Audience: Members of the public, journalists, meteorologists, and others new to remote sensing.

Course Dates: May 26 and 28, 2020

This training will be delivered in English and Spanish.

Come study with other students in the virtual Terrapin Learning Commons (TLC)! This is a 90-minute community work session via Zoom providing an opportunity to work individually alongside other students to stay motivated and focused. Bring an assignment, reading, or notes to review and get ready to get to work.
What to expect
  • Welcome from Library staff member
  • Participant intro and short description of what they are working on
  • Heads-down time for individual work in community with others
  • Progress check out from participants
  • Closing from Library staff member
  • A librarian will be on hand for the duration of the session for 1:1 questions via chat.

Earth Day at Maryland Webinar

Join us Wednesday April 22nd from 2 - 3 pm EST for a celebration of our planet, “Earth Day at Maryland: 50 Years of Climate Action and Sustainable Solutions.” Climate activist, author, and founder of 350.org, Bill McKibben will offer the opening remarks to a powerful keynote panel from leaders on the forefront of the climate fight in Maryland and Washington DC. Following, participants will break into small groups for engaged discussion on specific topics--including innovation, climate finance, and environmental justice. Through cross-sector collaboration we aim to understand our next steps in Maryland, a state already leading the charge on sustainable solutions, to actionably address climate change moving forward.
