INTERNSHIP NOTICE 1:

HELP BUILD FAMILY DIPLOMACY IN THE WORLD

ABOUT LEARNING LIFE AND THE INTERNSHIP

Learning Life is a nonprofit education and citizen engagement lab based in Washington D.C.  Our flagship program, the Family Diplomacy Initiative (FDI), connects families in nations worldwide via the internet to nurture a family form of citizen diplomacy.  Our International Mentoring Program helps open the world to children from lower-income families in the USA and abroad.  Our Democracy Dinners nurture deeper conversation across specialty silos among democracy sector activists, academics, professionals and elected officials in metro D.C.

Learning Life is now accepting resumes from graduate and undergraduate students interested in interning with us remotely.  Depending on each student’s interests and skills plus our organizational needs, interns support the above-mentioned three programs, assisting with a variety of tasks including research and writing; local to global outreach via social media, email and phone; document translation and/or live language interpreting; website and design; photo and video recording and/or editing; fundraising, and more.

The internship tentatively starts Friday, January 8, 2021 with a 1-2 hour orientation meeting via Zoom, and ends in early May.  During this period, interns must be able to commit a total of 10 hours/week: 9 hours/week of independent work + a live one-on-one 1-hour meeting online once per week with Learning Life’s Director, Paul Lachelier, to go over work completed and assign new tasks.

The internship is unpaid, but offers substantive, resume-building experience working on innovative international education and citizen engagement initiatives, and a formal reference and/or recommendation letter upon request given satisfactory performance.

THE INTERNS WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Applicants should be interested in international affairs, diplomacy, communications (video, photo and/or social media, especially Facebook), education, and/or children and families, and also be outgoing, organized, detail-oriented, motivated and punctual.  The ability to read, write and speak French, Spanish or Arabic at an advanced to fluent level is a plus, as are poster and video-making skills.

HOW TO APPLY

Email Paul Lachelier at paul@learninglife.info with your resume.  No need for a cover letter.  Please indicate in your email whether you speak Spanish, Arabic and/or French and at what level (basic, intermediate, advanced, or fluent).  Paul will contact you in December to schedule a phone interview if your resume matches what we are looking for.  Thank you for your interest!

AGI Invites Applications for New Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession

Scholarship opportunity for graduating seniors applying to graduate schools!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AGI Invites Applications for New Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce its new Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession. The scholarship is a one-time $5,000 award supporting geoscience graduate studies by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who self-identifies as a member of an underrepresented minority (Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color) and is within two semesters of completing a recognized geoscience program.

"The geosciences can thrive only with full participation from all communities, yet research shows that many underrepresented minority students face obstacles in the transition from undergraduate to graduate studies," says AGI Interim Executive Director Sharon Tahirkheli. "Supporting the next generation of aspiring minority geoscientists has perhaps never been more important."

The application deadline is February 21, 2021. The scholarship winner will be notified in April 2021. To learn more, see https://www.americangeosciences.org/workforce/agi-scholarship-advancing-diversity-geoscience-profession. If you have questions, please contact AGI Geoscience Profession and Higher Education Director Christopher Keane at keane@americangeosciences.org.

About AGI
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI), a federation of scientific and professional associations representing over a quarter-million geoscientists, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to serving the geoscience community and addressing the needs of society. Recruitment for AGU GeoHealth Social Media Fellow

 GEOHEALTH SOCIAL MEDIA FELLOW

Are you Twitter savvy? Are you passionate about advancing understanding of the complex interactions between our geospheric environment (including earth, water, soils and air) and the health of human populations? The American Geophysical Union’s GeoHealth section needs your help! We are seeking a social media savvy volunteer to apply to become the GeoHealth Social Media Fellow.

The Social Media Fellow will be a key partner of the GeoHealth Executive Committee by ensuring that there is a steady stream of content disseminated through the GeoHealth Twitter account. The Fellow will make posts and disseminate content within the scope of the guidelines outlined in the GeoHealth social media plan. Major goals include expanding GeoHealth section membership, increasing readership of and submission to the GeoHealth journal, building an active online community of practice where section members can connect and stay updated on the GeoHealth section happenings, and promoting the awareness of GeoHealth as a discipline to the general public and the broader scientific community.

Although we are seeking applicants that have previous experience with social media, our GeoHealth Social Media Fellow will also receive additional social media training from AGU staff.

This is a competitively awarded, unpaid, 1-year position. We anticipate that this would require a weekly commitment of 3-5 hours/week.

Interested? Email AGU’s GeoHealth Section Communications and Outreach Co-Chairs Amy Wolfe (Amy.Wolfe@uky.edu) and Mike Wimberly (mcwimberly@ou.edu) and include a 2-5 sentence statement that describes your interest in advancing the GeoHealth mission through social media. Please also share how you currently engage with Twitter (number of followers, average number of tweets per week) and an example Tweet that you are proud of!

Review of applications will begin on December 18, 2020 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found.

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.

Many Summer Scholars expand their summer research into an independent study or honors thesis project the following autumn semester, and find that their research experience helps distinguish their applications for graduate study, fellowships, internships, employment and other competitive opportunities.

Maryland Summer Scholars (MSS) may conduct their summer research on the College Park campus or elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad as required by the nature of the project. Students whose projects require travel for an extended period of time to off campus locations (not to include regular commuting) may submit a travel supplement request as directed in the online application form. Travel supplements will not exceed $1,000.

Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for an MSS award: if you have earned 12 or more UMD course credits (not including AP or IB credits) by the date of the application deadline; if you have a cumulative UMD GPA of 3.40 or higher by the date of the application deadline; and if you expect to receive your undergraduate degree no earlier than December 2021. All academic majors are eligible.

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2021 awards will be Thursday, February 14, 2021. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

A presentation about the MSS program is available on our website as well as on ELMS, along with presentations about additional summer research opportunities - for ELMS access please click here to complete a brief questionnaire
