MSGIC Emerging Professionals Industry Talks Series & Panel


The Emerging Professional Working Group has launched the 2021 Industry Talks Series. This event consists of a series of interviews with young professionals working in a variety of disciplines in the geospatial industry. This series is intended as an opportunity for students and emerging professionals to learn about our presenters' experiences entering the workforce and the skills and tips they've acquired along the way. 


The 2021 Industry Professional Talks will include a series of interviews with the panelists posted on the MSGIC website during the week of April 19th - 23nd, followed by an opportunity to engage the presenters directly at a virtual panel on April 28th. Interviews will be available here:

Apply today for BSOS Summer/Fall 2021 Undergraduate Experience Funds!

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service-learning, and professional or academic virtual conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities including, but not limited to;

  • pandemic conscious travel/transportation expenses
  • pandemic related relocation expenses 
  • professional attire
  • opportunity costs, (i.e. the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship.)
  • software/technology, material needs, not provided by employer/University, but essential to the experience. 
  • conference fees

If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an unpaid opportunity, you are encouraged to apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds.

The best consideration date for Summer/Fall 2021 experience applications is Tuesday, June 1, 2021 by 5 PM. Funding will be allocated on a rolling basis, based on the availability of funds. This application will close on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 by 5 PM or when funding for Summer/Fall 2021 experiences has been exhausted.

GEOG398X: Commercial Space Startups and Entrepreneurship 
Dr. Hannah Kerner
Students will be introduced to the commercial "newspace" industry as it relates to startup companies working on products and services related to geospatial technologies. Lectures will include guest speakers from newspace companies and investors. In addition, students will learn about how to develop a startup idea, stages of investment, etc. culminating in their own space-related startup pitch.

GEOG298C: Urban Futures: Planning for a Changing Climate
Dr. Keith Yearwood
How are the cities of the world adapting to or planning to adapt to climate change? This course focuses on urban areas and the environment, specifically how anthropogenic factors have impacted the environment and how the environment has responded. The aim is to discover how associated and concomitant problems owing to the development and use of the planets resources are created and the various approaches to reduce the negative impacts of these problems through a variety of approaches.

GEOG130: Development Geography: Environmental & Social Justice (Scholarship in Practice Gen Ed!)
Prof. Ipsita Kumar
The geography of economic, social, and environmental well-being and inequality. The course will provide an integrated perspective on the causes, interconnections, and consequences across time and space of, among others, globalization, climate change, poverty, employment, migration and urban growth, agricultural productivity, rural development, policies and international trade. Portraits of selected countries and regions will be developed.

Survey of landform types and role of processes in their generation. Frequency of occurrence and implications for land utilization. Emphasis on coastal, fluvial, and glacial landforms in different environmental settings. Landform regions of Maryland.

COVID Relief Funding Available for Students

 Hello GeoTerps!


The University of Maryland is encouraging eligible students facing financial distress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to apply for assistance through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II). Students who wish to apply must fill out the UMD Student COVID Relief Grant application and provide a statement about how the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in financial hardship.  

To complete the application, log in to the financial aid portal. Eligible students may use the funds for expenses such as food, housing, tuition, course materials, technology, health care, and child care. Detailed eligibility requirements can be found on the Financial Aid Office website.

Eligible students who already received the UMD Student COVID Relief Grant based on their 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and who are still experiencing financial distress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic may also submit the application for additional emergency COVID relief grant consideration.

 Cartographer Jobs with NOAA available! Great option for a graduating senior/recent grad! 

Three Cartographer positions will open up on USA Jobs on Friday, April 16 in the Office of Coast Survey's Marine Chart Division at NOAA.  We are recruiting these positions under both MAP and DE hiring authorities, please see the descriptions in the announcements to see which you qualify for.  

In order to qualify for the cartographer job series, you must have a degree in cartography or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). 

These are great jobs!  Coast Survey is the nation’s nautical chart-maker. We are responsible for updating charts, surveying the seafloor, responding to maritime emergencies, and searching for underwater obstructions that pose a danger to navigation.  Since what we do is very specialized, we will teach you what you need to know in training classes and on the job as long as you come in with a strong foundation in physical geography and geographic information systems (and/or any of the related coursework listed above) and are ready to learn.
