GEOG371 course in Fall 2022

If you are interested in advancing your technical skills in remote sensing, image processing and Python programming, please consider taking GEOG371 in Fall 2022. It builds upon GEOG272 (remote sensing) and GEOG276 (Principles of Python Programming and Geocomputing), and you will learn about techniques for dealing with raster and vector geospatial data. Previous year was the first time it was offered and we received great feedback from students. Within the course, we will also cover a lot of topics that are asked during technical interviews in remote sensing and GIS companies. 




2022 SCGIS Annual International Conference

As a part of the Society for Conservation GIS, I am excited to invite everyone to the 2022 SCGIS Annual International Conference on July 6-8!  (conference websiteregistration)

Please join us for this online conference, at a nominal fee, for three days of keynote speakers, presentations by the SCGIS community, and sessions on a wide range of conservation GIS topics.  The theme of the conference is “Maps:  The Stories We Tell.”  

The conference will open with two inspiring keynote presentations by Jim Enote, Executive director of the Colorado Plateau Foundation and Dr. Travis Belote, Director of Research at The Wilderness Society.  Each will share their approaches to what a map is and how they convey information about the land and community.  Come share the stories you are telling through cartography and interactive mapping for conservation. We invite you to submit your maps to our virtual Map Gallery during the conference!

The conference will also offer 8 technical training workshops, from how to create ArcGIS StoryMaps to 50 years of Landsat: Advanced Earth Engine. Gilman-McCain Scholarship Application Now Open

The application for the August 2022 cycle of the Gilman-McCain Scholarship is now open and for the first time it is open to both child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel! The Gilman-McCain application deadline is August 1 for programs between September 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023. Awards of up to $5,000 are available.


Applicants for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship must be a dependent (child or spouse) of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application (including Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps), and also be receiving any form of Title IV Financial Aid. All applicants must provide proof of dependent status as part of the Gilman-McCain application.

Course Description

What is design, who does it, and how is it done? There is no one answer to this question--it depends on who you ask. The answers to these questions vary across disciplines and across the University campus. This course, designed with modules from contributors in UMD programs including Information Studies, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphic Design, Immersive Media Arts, Journalism, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, and Policy, will introduce students to the goals and values, approaches, skills, and practices of diverse fields of design. Course Description

Introduces methods for analyzing and understanding how people use social media--social networking websites, blogging and microblogging, and other forms of online interaction and content generation--and their societal implications. Introduces students to the science and social science of network analysis. Through real world examples, including analysis of their own social networks, students develop skills for describing and understanding the patterns and usage of services like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and others.

 

INST204 Designing Fair Systems


Course Description
DSHS/SCIS

Reviews how specific values are built into different automated decision-making systems as an inevitable result of constructing mechanisms meant to produce specific outcomes. These values create differential outcomes for the different people enmeshed in these systems, but both these values and these systems can be changed to support different values and different outcomes. The class serves as an introduction to the emerging field of algorithmic bias that bridges the disciplines of information science, computer science, law, policy, philosophy, sociology, urban planning, and others.

New Summer Class - MFRI101 Preparing for Common Emergencies

The class is MFRI101 Preparing for Common Emergencies.   

The class is approved for 2 credits.   As a quick summary the class is designed to help students prevent, prepare for and/or respond to common emergencies.  At the completion of the course students will be able to:
  • become certified in Heartsaver First Aid/CPR and AED
  • correctly treat a patient with uncontrolled bleeding
  • determine and correct common safety hazards in their home
  • childproof their home
  • determine steps that they can take to travel safely
  • safety respond to common emergencies while traveling
  • correctly install a car seat in a vehicle
  • change a tire on a car
  • describe the process for jumping a car battery
  • put together a preparedness kit for natural disasters

It will be offered on Wednesdays during the second summer term.  It will be 6.5 hours per day with 1/2 hour for lunch.  There will be a fair amount of hands-on activities to keep them active during the day.

Description

The NASA Applied Remote Sensing and Training Program (ARSET) provides training on access and use of NASA earth science resources (https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/arset). The program is seeking an undergraduate student to provide database and communications support for the program for 20 hours a week. The main duties are:  

- Assist with record-keeping and participation in database management
- Support outreach activities to gather interest in the ARSET program from organizations across the world
- Generate graphical representations of program data

Qualifications

Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline required. Must be a U.S. citizen to gain eventual access to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. 

Skills needed: Good verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, MS Office including Word and Excel.

Highly desirable: coding experience, particularly relevant to database management, proficiency in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and experience with ArcGIS Pro is a plus!

The work will be conducted remotely, with one virtual meeting per week.

We are a consulting firm that is active in the ongoing energy transition with several projects relating to the geologic carbon sequestration industry. Duties for this role include working in a professional environment with energy experts, environmental scientists, and industry consultants. The knowledge of GIS systems and processes, paired with an ability to synthesize researched data, is required. An ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of GIS operations/ methodologies and expertise with ESRI software. Experience in geology or geologic carbon sequestration is preferred.   • Georeference and digitize data in ArcGIS Desktop
  • Integrate pre-existing geographic datasets

  • Perform quality, documented research


Required Qualifications:

National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism (START) Fall Paid Internships - Due June 12

START offers paid internships year round on a variety of research projects and teams. During the course of their internship, participants are exposed to the most up-to-date theories, methods and information related to the study of terrorism. They are versed in the critical questions tackled by homeland security practitioners, policy makers and researchers, and are mentored in a professional environment geared toward student success. The program is designed to prepare the next generation of homeland security scholars and practitioners through real-world research experience.

START’s internship program is open to undergraduate and graduate students (as well as some recent graduates) in any related discipline from any institution. Each internship lasts for one term. Participants work at least 10 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters and 20 hours/week during the summer. Our internships can be undertaken for academic credit, and this is highly encouraged. Interns participate in a program of enrichment and career development opportunities. All interns are required to work onsite with their research project staff. Because interns work directly with our researchers and staff on current research projects, the internship positions vary depending on our research portfolio.
