Rated among the top graduate programs in the nation by the National Research Council, the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMD) is a leader in remote sensing, geospatial information science, coupled human and natural systems analysis, land-use land cover change, ecosystem dynamics, ecological economics, social networks and participatory stakeholder processes, and applied economic geography. The Department is uniquely positioned for big data analysis and integrated research on the human and physical dimensions of global change and sustainability sciences.

The Department is home to the Center for the Geospatial Information Science and the new Center for Excellence in Remote Sensing. The department has strong collaborations with a number of Centers on campus at UMD, including the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI). The department has a number of active collaboration with scientists at NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center and has strong links to a number of international and federal institutions which are also located in the area, such as NASA, NOAA, USGS, USDA, EPA, NIH, FHWA, DOE, World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. These institutions provide additional training and career-development opportunities for our students to actively participate in addressing real and pressing local, national and global issues.

The Department seeks to have 12-15 new enrollments in the 2019-2020 academic year and the enrolled PhD students will be fully funded through Dean’s Fellowships, Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) or Teaching Assistantships (GTA).

Current starting GRA and GTA stipend: $20,602 (start)/9.5 months appointment; with 10 credit hours/semester tuition remission currently valued at $11,660/semester ($23,320/academic year for resident student). GRAs and GTAs are also entitled to health benefits ($2,000/year). There is often an opportunity to earn additional compensation over the summer, and if you are interested please note this in your application.
