The World Bank’s GeoCenter is conducting an in-depth study on the spatial development of African cities and is seeking help classifying urban land cover in 15+ large cities. Using SPOT5 (2.5m pan and 10m multispectral) imagery, the goal is to use a semi-automated approach to distinguish between neighborhoods that appear to be residential and areas that are more commercial/industrial. More specifically, we will need help with scene selection, drawing training sites, organization of large amounts of imagery, and post classification accuracy assessments.
For this project, we are looking for people that have some GIS and/or remote sensing knowledge, and are eager to learn and adopt the methodology we have chosen. Knowledge of primary African cities is preferred, but not required. This task will take place over the next few months, with contracts lasting approximately 20-30 days. While the core team works at the World Bank headquarters in DC, the option to do this work remotely is possible. If you are interested, please submit your resume to geocenter@worldbank.org with the subject line “Land Cover Classification Consultant.”
