University of Maryland Student Chapter, Society of American Military
Engineers
Opportunities
A Student Chapter of
the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is being established this
Fall Semester at the University of Maryland, College Park. The objective of the
Chapter is to provide students opportunities to learn more about and connect to
the many opportunities available in both the public and private sectors to
participate in the broad collaborative efforts ongoing to serve the nation’s
national security infrastructure related challenges. This chapter welcomes all
who are interested in this area.
SAME is a national
professional organization with over 29,000 members globally who represent over
1400 companies and public agencies. This represents over 300 companies and many
agencies in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area alone. While SAME members include
many STEM professionals in uniform, the majority of members are civilians who
work both in government agencies and for companies who support those agencies.
Mission areas span all aspects of science and engineering as well as the
support to those professions.
The UMD Student
Chapter will provide a venue for students to:
- Learn more about the spectrum of professional and career opportunities available in this critical field
- Augment their education and professional development through direct association with organizations and professionals who work in this area
- Connect with local, regional and national organizations involved in SAME, providing access to opportunities for scholarships, internships, job interviews, and summer employment
- Become part of one of the most effective and dynamic professional communities in existence who are collaboratively addressing many of the national critical long term needs and challenges.
The first meeting of
the UMD Chapter is expected to be late September, on campus. Professor David
Lovell, from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), will
be the Faculty Mentor for the Chapter. The Mid-Maryland SAME Post, one of over
140 SAME local organizations, is sponsoring the Student Chapter and providing
access to Society resources and connections as well as support for Chapter
activities. We will not be building
canoes or bridges, but we will be helping to build futures.
