Mapping lava flow channels on Mars
Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) - Internship for Undergraduates!
Lava flows on Mars can travel several hundred to over one-thousand km from their volcanic vent. Within the Tharsis Volcanic Province, lava flows are sometimes characterized by very long channels and tube-like features. In order to unravel the volcanic past of this large area of Mars, it is important to know the size of the channels and where these large channels flowed.
This project will involve mapping the locations of many channelized lava flows and their source locations where possible. Determining source locations of long lava flows will add to a database of known eruption locations, and will help to better characterize the long history of volcanism at Tharsis.
