NSF Research Opportunity

The NSF I/UCRC Spatiotemporal Innovation Center is recruiting two RET (Research Experience for Teachers) and one or two REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) fellows for around six to seven weeks from June 2019 to August 2019. The application deadline is Feb 4, 2019.

The NSF I/UCRC Spatiotemporal Innovation Center aims to address the intelligent spatiotemporal computing challenges in the 21st century as well as the data collection, intelligent integration, knowledge construction, and geovisualization. Integrating the spatiotemporal characteristics of natural phenomena, social events, and the environment, we aim to enhance the computing strategy and technology with these characteristics for higher efficiency and effectiveness. Several ongoing projects can be found on the center website: www.stcenter.net.

A complete application includes: 1) a C.V., 2) one-page double-spaced statement of interest, 3) contact information (email and phone #) of two referees.

Selection process: There will be three steps for selecting the students: 1) Site directors will collaboratively select a pool of promising applicants. 2) Faculty members will select the relevant applicants who match their interest. 3) A phone interview will be arranged with the selected candidates to consider the applicant's background and skills in communication, teamwork, and topic interest.

This welcome event will serve as an opportunity to create and engage in the community, ask questions, learn about resources, as well as reflect and share goals alongside other students at UMD. We will be spending our morning engaging in some community building activities and also explore our role in several upcoming opportunities and events taking place this semester like Social Justice Day with Keynote Speaker Diane Guerrero, author, and actress from Orange is the New Black. 

This four-hour welcome event will give us enough time to learn about resources and upcoming opportunities, meet peers, share a meal and take some time to enjoy the community that we have built so far.

Data Challenge 2019

Data Challenge 2019 is a week-long (Feb 23 - Mar 2) competition where students from the University of Maryland are charged with solving a complex problem by leveraging their analytical skills and creative ideas. As a participant you will solve an information problem based on a dataset of your choice from a sponsoring organization. There will be a competition where you will have the opportunity to present your findings, with a chance to win prizes. During the event days, you will network with company representatives, and listen to industry tech-talks.

The datasets for this year have not been released yet, BUT last year datasets provided included Landsat data, NEXRAD Weather data, tons of transportation data, a Geomapping tool, and more (see them all here). Datasets this year will likely be similar which means, as GIS and GEOG students, you would be EXCELLENT PARTICIPANTS for this challenge! You may sign up as a team of 4 or as an individual and join a team later.

USGIF's Scholarship Program

Do you know someone who deserves to be recognized and rewarded for their academic achievements?

USGIF's Scholarship Program annually awards students studying geospatial intelligence and related fields with financial assistance. We offer multiple scholarships at various amounts for high school seniors all the way through the Ph.D. level. 

Stu Shea Scholarship applications due: Feb. 28.

All other applications due: May 15 

Scholarships

Stu Shea USGIF Endowed Scholarship - $15,000

This new scholarship is awarded to one Ph.D. student studying cartography, geography, or imaging science.

Ken Miller Scholarship for Advanced Remote Sensing Applications - $10,000

Created in partnership with Riverside Research, this scholarship is awarded annually to one master's student working in or planning to enter the Defense and/or Intelligence workforce.

RGi Scholarship for Geospatial & Engineering - $10,000

This scholarship, in partnership with Reinventing Geospatial Inc. (RGi), will be awarded to one undergraduate student who demonstrates financial need and is interested in or studying both the engineering and geospatial disciplines. 

USGIF also awards 15-25 scholarships at the doctoral, graduate, undergraduate, and graduating high school senior levels. $5,000 is given to doctoral, graduate, and undergraduates, while high school seniors receive $2,000. Apply here!
