Child Care Aware® of America GIS Internship for Spring 2022

Summary of Position: The Research department at Child Care Aware® of America is seeking a motivated, full-time undergraduate (or graduate) intern to work remotely for 10-20 hours per week for the Spring 2022 semester. The intern will have the opportunity to learn and enhance research skills while working closely with Child Care Aware® of America research staff to analyze socio-spatial intersections of poverty, nutrition, food access, and child care.


  Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Serve as a key researcher on the Nemours Healthy Kids Grant.
  •  Help collect, analyze, and present child care and nutrition data and research.
  •  Co-author data analysis in narrative form in a story map.
  •  Learn and operate within the organization’s geospatial data management system.
  •  Engage with stakeholders for data collection and writing collaboration / feedback.
  •  Help to clean and organize data and research items and conduct follow-up as necessary.
  •  Manage project data in both local (Excel) and remote (ArcGIS Online) formats.
  •  Assist with other activities as assigned, i.e., background research and literature reviews.

 

  Qualifications:

  •  Undergraduate (or graduate) student majoring in geography, sociology, early childhood education, women’s studies, statistics, or other social sciences subject area.
  •  Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) is required (1 year full-time or 2 completed college-level GIS/geospatial analysis courses).
  •  A background in social science research with emphasis on geospatial data collection, management, and analysis (including use of ESRI’s ArcGIS suite [especially ArcGIS Online & Story Maps] and Microsoft Excel) is highly desirable.
  •  Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  •  Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet research tools.
  •  An interest in child care, education, social justice, social sustainability, equity, and/or nutrition is strongly preferred.
