The U.S. Census Bureau's International Programs area is seeking a software engineer/ international technical advisor. This is a federal position. Background: The Methodology and Software Development Branch of the International Programs area in Population Division provides tools, training and technical assistance to countries around the world. Some of our recent projects include providing assistance to Nepal, Jordan, Namibia and Angola. We also develop free software tools for data processing and analysis used worldwide including a new Android application for electronic data collection.
Position description: We are seeking a software engineer/international technical advisor who can both develop computer software tools and travel overseas to provide assistance to other countries with their statistical programs. Job duties include developing and testing software tools as well as providing remote and in-person technical assistance to governmental and non-governmental organizations in developing countries on census and survey data processing, data collection and data dissemination. Candidates should have a degree in computer science or a related field plus experience with one or more of the following programming languages: C++, Java, C#, PHP, Javascript. Should have a strong interest in international travel and proven ability to work in different cultures. Experience living overseas and ability to speak a foreign language (French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Arabic especially) would be ideal. Subject matter knowledge of census and survey processes is a plus.
