We have formed a Python Study Group here in the English Department, and we are hoping you will join us! The group will meet every Thursday from 6:15PM-7:15PM in Tawes 3248. During this hour, we will go through (free) online tutorials via Codecademy. There is no need to prepare in advance; all you need to bring is your laptop and one hour's worth of concentration. This will be a low-stress way for us interested beginners* to learn collaboratively while also keeping ourselves accountable in progressing through the material. No worries if you can’t make it one week: just check our Facebook community page (http://on.fb.me/1OGldtK) to see our current progress. You can catch up on your own time and jump back in the next meeting! This site will also be useful for those who can't come during our meeting time and want to work with us remotely. You can ask questions on the community page, and others will hopefully be able to help you resolve the issues.
We had our first meeting last week, so if you want to join in, we will be starting from the fourth lesson (the datetime Library). It should only take about 30-45 minutes of dedicated work to get there from the beginning.
Whether you are interested in the Digital Humanities or have just always wanted to learn a programming language, we would be glad to have you join us. Python is a great place to start, as it is known for being relatively easy to read while also having great applicability. Come on by and give it a shot!
Best,
Setsuko Yokoyama (setsuko@umd.edu) and Andy Yeh (yeha@umd.edu)
