Intern for a Day connects undergraduate UMD students with alumni, parents, employers and community partners for one day job shadowing experiences.

In order to receive an application to participate in Intern for a Day, students must attend an informative, 30-minute orientation session that will cover the application process, how students will be matched with a host, best practices when shadowing the host on-site and how to show appreciation to the host after the experience.

Students will receive the application after attending one of the orientation sessions above.  Applications will be due Sunday, March 1 at 11:59pm.

Students who have already participated in Intern for a Day still need to attend one orientation session.

UAF Summer Course

Arctic Alaska Vegetation, Permafrost & Ecosystems

Summer Field Course, 8–24 June 2020
University of Alaska Fairbanks

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) announces a 3-credit, 17-day summer field course: "BIOL 495/ 695, Arctic Alaska Vegetation, Permafrost & Ecosystems." The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning about the Arctic.

The course includes two days of classroom instruction and local field trips in the Fairbanks area followed by a 13-day field excursion to Alaska's North Slope of the Brooks Range. Instructors include arctic research scientists and local experts in permafrost, vegetation, birds, mammals, ecosystem science, Arctic parks, life in an arctic village, and oilfield environmental research. Students will undertake an independent research project of their choosing. The course concludes with two days for student presentations at UAF. 

The class will travel along the Dalton Highway, which traverses boreal forest, alpine, and arctic tundra biomes from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, AK. Eleven days will be spent camping at different locations along the route. We will also spend a night at Toolik Field Station, a world-renowned arctic research station. 

The cost of transportation and meals during the field excursion is included in the course fee, as well as lodging at Toolik Field Station and on UAF’s campus. (Students are responsible for meals during the 4-day campus portion of the course.) Students will need to bring all-weather clothing including winter jackets and rubber boots, and a good sleeping bag and three-season tent (if available—a limited selection of sleeping bags and expedition tents are available to those who do not have them). 

The course is limited to 10 undergraduate and/or graduate students. Pre-requisites include two semesters of college-level science with one upper-level course or permission of instructor. A $250 non-refundable deposit is required by 15 April 2020. The balance of the course payment is due 15 May. International students must submit an International Student Summer Application and supporting documents by 15 March.

StudentPIRG Applications Open

What are you doing after graduation?

The Student PIRGs are looking for graduating seniors who are ready to make a difference and help us increase the youth vote in November. We are gearing up to help register 100,000 students to vote and make 250,000 Get out the Vote (GOTV) contacts in 16 states. We are also continuing our campaigns to commit states to 100% Renewable Energy, phase out the use of single use plastics and make college more affordable.

Does this sound like something you want to do post graduation? Apply today before our Winter Early Application deadline on February 26th!

Students are often at the forefront of movements to build a better future for our country. Whether or not those students make real progress depends on whether they are organized, have the skills to be effective and a strategic plan to get things done. The Student PIRGs have been working for over 40 years to amplify the power of student activism, and help students tackle some of the country’s most pressing problems. If we want to continue this legacy of helping young people make progress- we need more people, like you, to join us!

Our organizers work full-time to provide students the training, professional support and resources they need to move our country forward while also gaining campaign skills themselves. A big bonus is that you will be trained by some of the top organizers in the country. If you want a job where you can make a real impact apply today before our Winter Early Application deadline on Feb 26th.

Here are just a few of the victories the Student PIRGs organizers have accomplished this year:

• Nationally we helped thousands of students and counting get registered and ready to vote in their state's Primary Election.
• In California, we declared UC Davis and UC Berkeley as "Bee Friendly" campuses with our campaign to Save the Bees.
• In Oregon, we banned foam cups and take out containers in the city of Eugene.
• In Florida, we worked to get Eckerd College signed on to the Break Free From Plastics pledge and stop the use of single use plastics on campus.

All the while our program involved and trained thousands of students leaders to work on our campaigns!

3rd Annual GEOG Table Tennis Tournament!

Want to get out of your office and meet people in the department? Please join us for the 3rd Annual Geography Table Tennis Tournament! 

Last year we had 31 players including faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The tournament lasts all semester and players meet once every week or so for their matches. At the end of the semester (tentatively April 30 or May 7) we'll hold a championship game with food and music for all to enjoy. 

All skill levels are invited and we have a beginner bracket for those still learning. If you are very new to the sport, let us know and we'll host a couple practice sessions where we will teach basics and review rules. 

Sign up for the tournament by Friday, February 28. Rules and bracket will be emailed to players shortly thereafter.
