REGISTER NOW FOR BSOS330: Programming for the Social Sciences: Statistical Computing Using R (Fall 2018)

Course Description: R is an open-source programming language, specialized for statistical computing, and provides a variety of statistical and graphical techniques that might be relevant for any BSOS program, such descriptive statistics, linear and non-linear regression, text mining, image processing. The R language is increasingly often employed in advanced statistics and data analytics, offering a wide range of application packages for effective programming. This course introduces the R language and several powerful packages in form of lectures, worked-out examples, and group exercises. Instructor: Franz Klein. Course meets Mondays 4-6pm in LEF 0229. Open to all BSOS majors. 1-credit.

IN CLASSICS at UMD!

The Department of Classics has received a grant from the National Italian American Foundation that has enabled us to fund a number of scholarships for undergraduates. 

They fall into the following specific categories:

FOR LATIN STUDENTS:

Partial tuition scholarships for students who took Latin in high school and who are prepared to continue the study of Latin at the University of Maryland, College Park at the 200 (intermediate) level or above.

A first-year student who has taken high school Latin and who registers for two Latin courses in the first year at Maryland is eligible to apply for a $2000 tuition scholarship ($1000 each semester).

With a total of five courses, you can earn a minor in Latin!

FOR WINTER TERM

STUDY ABROAD IN ITALY:

Scholarships for study abroad in the Classics Department’s 3-credit winter term program in Italy, “Ancient Greek and Roman Culture in Context.”  A number of full and partial scholarships, which may include the cost of airfare, will be awarded annually on a combined need and merit basis with first priority given to majors and minors in Classics and then to majors in related disciplines such as History and Art History.

FOR A ONE-WEEK SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN ITALY:

Scholarships for a one-week, one-credit summer study abroad program, related to a semester-long course in Classics (the department’s I-series course, CLAS 289A, “Are We Rome?”).  A number of full and partial scholarships, which may include airfare, will be given for this program annually on a merit basis, with priority given to majors, minors, and students enrolled in the semester course.  (Students may take the summer course independently of the semester course.)

GIS Short-term Consultant Opportunity

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network, or FEWS NET, a leading provider of objective, evidence-based food security analysis, is looking for a GIS consultant to create a 40-45 maps for three different country reports based on primary and secondary data. The estimated level of effort is up to 15 working days between June 25^th and August 15^th.

The candidate should have a B.S/B.A or M.A degree in a GIS field, preferably geography. Current M.A. or upper-class B.A. students may be considered based on experience, work samples, and relevant course-work. The candidate should have experience with ESRI ArcMap 10.5 including experience with editing, joins, geoprocessing, and thematic mapping, including experience producing professional publication quality maps for reports and presentations using a consistent format and style.

NASA DEVELOP Internships

The NASA DEVELOP Program is currently recruiting for the fall 2018 term. This is a 10-week paid contracting position open for current students, recent college graduates, and career transitioning professionals including veterans of the Armed Forces. Although the term is only 10 weeks, there are many opportunities to advance through the program to year-long contracts.

This is a great opportunity for individuals who are interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS, specifically in the field of Earth Science. Our projects focus on addressing local and international community concerns while utilizing NASA's Earth observations. Participants work in teams, with guidance from NASA and partner science advisors, to demonstrate to partner organizations how NASA remote sensing imagery can be used in water resources, disaster management, ecological forecasting, and other applications to address environmental community concerns. DEVELOP’s projects are interdisciplinary in nature, so applications are welcome from all academic backgrounds.

The fall online application window is May 21 – June 29.  The fall program dates are September 10 – November 16. The DEVELOP program has three terms: spring, summer, and fall – the term dates and application windows are updated on the “Apply” page of the DEVELOP website. In addition to Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, there are many other locations across the United States that you can find on the "Locations" page.

Responsibilities include: literature review, data processing and analysis, and composing deliverables including a technical paper, poster, presentation, and video. Previous GIS or remote sensing knowledge, while beneficial and more competitive, are not required for acceptance.

Applicants must have excellent communication and writing skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Days of the week are flexible, but applicants should be able to commit to 20-28 hours per week for the fall term. Paid positions are funded using a rate determined by application type, education level, and location.
