The Dean’s Student Advisory Council is pleased to invite you to our 9th annual Student-Faculty Dinner.

The Student-Faculty Dinner is an honored BSOS tradition where students and faculty have the opportunity to connect outside of the classroom in an informal setting. The dinner will be held at Orem Hall in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center on Tuesday, November 3. A mocktail half-hour will begin at 5:30 pm with dinner to follow from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

U.S. Census Bureau Hiring Software Engineer/International Technical Advisor

The U.S. Census Bureau's International Programs area is seeking a software engineer/international technical advisor. This is a federal position. In addition to the primary qualifications below, geospatial experience would certainly be welcome. Background: The Methodology and Software Development Branch of the International Programs area in Population Division provides tools, training and technical assistance to countries around the world. Some of our recent projects include providing assistance to Nepal, Jordan, Namibia and Angola. We also develop free software tools for data processing and analysis used worldwide including a new Android application for electronic data collection.

Position description: We are seeking a software engineer/international technical advisor who can both develop computer software tools and travel overseas to provide assistance to other countries with their statistical programs. Job duties include developing and testing software tools as well as providing remote and in-person technical assistance to governmental and non-governmental organizations in developing countries on census and survey data processing, data collection and data dissemination. Candidates should have a degree in computer science or a related field plus experience with one or more of the following programming languages: C++, Java, C#, PHP, Javascript. Should have a strong interest in international travel and proven ability to work in different cultures. Experience living overseas and ability to speak a foreign language (French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Arabic especially) would be ideal. Subject matter knowledge of census and survey processes is a plus.

Conference on Geographic Education

The MAD-AAG Board together with the Department of Geography & Environmental Planning, Towson University, look forward to welcoming students, colleagues, and members of the wider community to this year's MAD-AAG Annual Conference (Halloween Weekend, Oct. 30-Nov. 1). 

This year's conference includes on October 31 a morning panel on Geographic Education, a midday panel discussion on international initiatives, "Regions aren't only 'Regional': a Global Roundtable," and an afternoon panel targeted for students, "Careers in Geography." The day will include a wide range of paper presentations by students, faculty, and professionals on topics ranging the gamut from religion to climate change, web mapping to urban development, and from geopolitics to "place."

Guidelines for the annual MAGMA Student Awards (submissions until 10/20/2015):

1.    The competition is open to all MAD-Regional students (ugrad and grad).

2.    Papers will be judged on their overall quality, creativity and contribution to furthering geography (broadly conceived). We particularly encourage work that is innovative, creative, informed and demonstrates familiarity with the appropriate scholarly literature. 

3.    Papers should be single-authored,  1.5 line spaced, 12-point font, and no more than 20 pages in length (i.e., a maximum of 10,000), excluding references, tables, maps and figures, and a required abstract.

4.    In the electronic submission, authors should indicate their name, institution, and level of study (Ugrad, MA/MS, PhD).

5.    To be considered for this award, students must submit electronic copies of their paper by October 20^th, 2015 to the chair of MAD-AAG, Tracy Edwards, at TEdwards@frostburg.edu

All students who submit a paper will receive a one-year free membership to MAD.

Environmental Career Opportunity

Green Corps Class of 2016-2017: Fall Application Deadline Oct 11!

 

In the next few months, we‘ll invite 35 recent and soon-to-be college graduates to join the Green Corps class of 2016-2017.

During Green Corps' full year paid training program, participants will learn grassroots organizing skills from some of the top practitioners in the country while working on three to five different campaigns. They’ll tackle issues like retiring dirty coal-fired power plants, protecting our drinking water, improving our food system, and building the fossil fuel divestment movement on college campuses. Organizers will learn important skills such as recruiting volunteers, developing strategic campaigns, and building strong coalitions. 

Our organizers have worked on behalf of dozens of groups, including Sierra Club, Food & Water Watch, and the National Wildlife Federation. Our alumni include Phil Radford, the Executive Director of Greenpeace USA, Sarah Hodgdon, National Program Director for Sierra Club, and Heather Smith, President of Rock the Vote.

 

Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day. We need more organizers -- people who understand the power of public support and know how to mobilize it.

Information Technology

GIS Support Specialist:  Responsible for developing/maintaining Geographic Information System databases/applications, analyzing system requirements, developing, testing and prototyping GIS applications; and developing procedures for maintaining GIS databases.

Minimum Qualifications:    

Any combination of education, experience and/or training equivalent to the following:

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Geographic information Systems, or related field; or
• Applicable technical certifications AND 2 years of professional Information Technology work experience
• A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

PERFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ø  5 years of professional Information Technology work experience and/or related Technical Certifications
