HIP Consult Internship

The consulting firm HIP Consult is recruiting GIS Interns to help create vector GIS data for our infrastructure mapping and analytics project, InfraNav. This is generally both a challenging and rewarding internship, as interns work alongside more experienced members of the team and are regularly exposed to other aspects of the business.They are looking for excellent problem-solvers who are looking to expand open-source GIS skills. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. We hire on a rolling basis but we’re primarily recruiting for Summer 2019. Interns are compensated at an hourly rate.

Gender, Finance, and Power Panel

On March 12th, at 4:00pm in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center, the Department of Women's Studies will host the Gender, Finance, and Power Panel. Featured speakers will cover topics ranging from personal wealth management, entrepreneurship, and navigating the world of business. Please circulate this to your students and faculty to get the word out about our event. It will be a lively panel, and will be of great interest to your students.

Film Screening - Center for Migration Studies

The Center for Migration Studies & ISSS are screening a documentary called "Human Flow" tomorrow Wednesday at 5:30pm at H.J. Patterson. 

A very interesting documentary film about a Hot Button issue in our generation. The screening will be followed by a discussion.

Research Opportunity at UCF

This summer at the University of Central Florida, we are pleased to host the fourth year of our National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site "Preparing the Next Generation of Scholars through Community GIS and Citizen Science." Our program offers fully funded summer research experiences for undergraduate students in Belize and Orlando for 7 weeks. The program is open to all U.S. students and runs June 3 – July 18, 2019. We are interdisciplinary in nature emphasizing community GIS, citizen science, drones and spatial storytelling through mixed methods.

More about our REU Site: This year's research direction is focused on mapping coastal and island resiliency with drones and spatial storytelling. Students will work with community partners and mentors from University of Central Florida, University of Belize, The Hopkins Belize Village Council, and The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program.

Compensation: Each REU student will receive a competitive funding package, including a $3500 research stipend, a meal allowance, free shared housing in Belize and Orlando, up to $750 in travel support to/from the REU Site, up to $750 for post-REU conference travel, and 2 research methods books.

Summer 2019 Wildlife Internship

Paid Hourly RAship

The iSchool islooking for an undergraduate or masters student interested in working during the Spring semester (and potentially during the Summer) on a research project focused on usage analysis of dockless bikes. This is an hourly RAship. The student will be required to commit 10hr/week.  The hourly rate will be between $11-$15, commensurate with experience. The work will involve setting up a  data collection pipeline from an api, working on data cleaning, visualizations, computing general statistics and insights about the data, and a preliminary exploration of a set of research questions.

The student needs to be proficient in Python and Javascript, and be familiar with visualization tools such as GeoPandas, Folium (or Leaflet).
