GEOG477/777 (Mobile GIS Development) has the honor to invite Dr. Hanan Samet, a Distinguished University Professor of Computer Science at UMD, to give a guest lecture on Monday, 3/12/18 from 11:00-11:50 AM in 1201 LeFrak Hall.

Smartphones connect our physical and virtual environments like no previous technology. They bring vast volumes of information literally to our fingertips, and we carry them everywhere. The way we use our smartphones and interact with the virtual environment is evolving rapidly and unpredictably, as Apple, Google and their competitors continuously develop new operating systems and apps. In this lecture, Professor Samet will explore smartphone trends, rivalries and possibilities, focusing in particular on the latest developments in mapping apps.

Join the Lavender Leadership Honor Society

The Lavender Leadership Honor Society is an initiative of the LGBT Equity Center and advised by a student board. The honor society celebrates and develops leadership for LGBTQ+ social justice. It is open to University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate and graduate students, as well as staff, faculty, and alumni of the university. Founded in 2015, the society has been acknowledged in the Washington Post, and is believed to be the first collegiate honor society focusing on leadership for LGBTQ+ social justice.

Job description
As a GIS Data Analyst, we are looking for someone to help us scaling out our efforts to drive the acquisition, creation, and ingestion of GIS parcel and boundary data. Supporting our core platforms that show nationwide boundaries for properties both residential and commercial there are areas on the map where data from third-party vendors do not have parcel points, boundaries, and centers. Through internal efforts, the GIS data analyst will help us create these boundaries from image files procured through local data sources (counties, courts) and generate the georeferenced files for ingestion in our platform.

As the GIS Data Analyst, you are someone who is detailed oriented, can work in a fast-paced environment, and can work in an autonomous pace prioritizing multi-projects at once.

Responsibilities:

• Partner with the Support and Quality engineering teams to identify areas of boundaries that need to be created 
• Work with the Data Acquisition team members to source and get the image files for each plat, boundary area 
• Generate and georeferenced parcel boundary shape files and layers for consumption in our data platform 
• Help build a team of GIS analysts potentially even one offshore to help with the volume of layers needed 
• Drive a process to help build a quality pipeline to ensure teammates’ projects are done with the highest quality and accuracy 

Requirements:

• BS/BA in GIS, Geography, Archaeology, or related field 
• 1-2 years of experience and knowledge of using GIS technologies such as ArcGIS or related software 
• Experience geo-referencing and create boundary/shape layer files 
• Extreme attention to detail and organization 
• Ability and eagerness to learn new technologies quickly 
• Experience juggling multiple shifting priorities for a variety of tasks

The Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) supports U.S. foreign policy objectives by helping local partners advance peace and democracy. OTI provides fast, flexible, short-term assistance targeted at key political transition and stabilization needs. Strategically designed for each unique situation, OTI has laid the foundation for long-term development by promoting reconciliation, jumpstarting local economies, supporting emerging independent media, and fostering peace and democracy through innovative programming. In countries transitioning from authoritarianism to democracy, from violence to peace, or following a fragile peace, OTI’s programs serve as catalysts for positive political change.

Macfadden is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern to support USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives (USAID/OTI) in Washington, DC, on the Data Analysis Team (DAT). The DAT utilizes innovative visualization tools providing analysis of political transitions and other complex crises. The GIS Intern will work with the team to provide cartographic, geographic, and analytic information services to USAID/OTI’s programs and their interagency counterparts, a critical component of USAID/OTI’s context-driven programming model. The team’s products and technical assistance will help explain the “what, why, and where” behind USAID/OTI’s work and inform strategic and program decision-making. The DAT is an integral part of the Applied Best Practices and Coordination (ABC) team within the Program, Learning and Innovation (PLI) division of OTI.
