$2,000 Scholarship Opportunity - UMD Alumni Association

 The Alumni Association will be awarding 33 scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year. 

 

All current students who have completed one semester at the University of Maryland College Park and will be enrolled full time (12+ credits for undergraduate students and 48+ units for graduate students) during both Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters are eligible to apply. Scholarship award recipients will receive $1,000 each semester.

The Global Land Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) laboratory in the Department of Geographical
Sciences at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce an internship opportunity for summer 2021. Interns will work full-time alongside experienced remote sensing scientists to investigate land cover and land use extent and change using Earth observation imagery. All members of the lab regularly collaborate and help to facilitate each other’s work, making this an excellent way to learn methods for land cover and land use mapping and analysis, as well as to connect with scientists in the field. There will be opportunities for continued engagement with the lab upon completion of the summer internship.

Tim  -- Funded, Virtual Summer NSF Undergraduates and Teachers Program Announcement Citizen Science GIS NSF REU/RET Site Overview: This summer virtually through Citizen Science GIS at University of Central Florida, we are pleased to host the fifth year of our National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates & Teachers (REU/RET) Site "Preparing the Next Generation of Scholars through Community GIS and Citizen Science." Our virtual program (due to COVID) offers fully funded summer research experiences for eight undergraduate students and two K-12 teachers. Participants will also be invited to a fully funded ten-day fieldwork experience to Belize in early 2022 as COVID conditions improve.  Program Dates: Virtual from June 1-July 9, 2021. Belize fieldwork, early 2022. Application process: Priority application deadline is Friday, April 9th at: www.citizensciencegis.org/nsf-reuret-site. 3/31 Zoom session: Join us from 4-5 pm EST on Zoom to ask questions/learn more about the program with our REU/RET faculty. We are interdisciplinary emphasizing community geography, community GIS, and citizen science through mixed methods, including sketch mapping, mobile mapping applications, focus groups, in-depth interviews, GIS, spatial analysis, and drones. Since 2016, over 70% of participants have been from underrepresented groups in STEM, and from several disciplines including geography, GIS, environmental studies, sociology, anthropology, biology, chemistry, political science, business/economics, education, and more. Research directions: Work with community partners and mentors from University of Central Florida, George Mason University, University of Belize, Georgia State University, and The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program. Research Direction 1: Leveraging community geography & GIS to map disparities in flooding. Research Direction 2: Leveraging community geography & GIS to reduce waste and prevent marine debris. Funding: $4200 research stipend, $750 for post-REU conference travel or industry visits, research methods books, technology support, and all expenses covered for 2022 Belize fieldwork. Rachel Moore Marks,  GEOG '16 |  Natural Resource Planner, Chesapeake and Coastal Service of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:  Rachel obtained a BS in Environmental Science and Policy with a focus in Wildlife Ecology and Management from University of Maryland (UMD) in 2010.  She then received a Master's Certificate in Geospatial Information Science (GIS) and a Master's Degree in Physical Geography from the Department of Geographical Sciences in 2011 and 2016 respectively. Her educational and professional background has focused on a combination of GIS, remote sensing, wildlife and forest ecology, and ecological modeling. Since 2016, she has worked as a Natural Resource Planner with the Chesapeake and Coastal Service of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.  She uses her specialization in ecology, geospatial analysis, and ecological modeling to create statewide spatial data, web maps, and interactive web-based decision support tools for use by state, federal, non-profit, and private conservation and restoration partners in natural resource management, project funding, and policy creation.

  The internship with the Mapping Team within the Storytelling Division will work on projects to build and coordinate cross-departmental mapping efforts. The intern will work with our Education, Explorer, and Digital teams to help implement our mapping infrastructure and best practices for mapping and GIS. This work will include assessing the best tools, databases, and training resources applicable to solutions for these teams. Our ideal candidate is highly motivated, thinks creatively and understands the importance of geospatial tools, analysis, and storytelling for education and science.

  Internship Description

  Five Principal Learning Responsibilities

  • Enhance geospatial data research and organization skills (20%)
  • Hone skills in analyzing online training resources for learning complex geospatial analysis and mapping techniques (20%)
  • Gain exposure to NGS programs, team members, and strategic priorities (20%)
  • Increase ability to work effectively in a team environment (20%)
  • Expand knowledge of proprietary and open source GIS and mapping tools (20%)

  Related Field of Study Required

  Current undergraduate or graduate student working towards a degree in Geography or a related science or social science field that involves extensive use of geospatial tools, data and analysis. Student will need to be enrolled in school during the internship.

  Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Ability to work well with others and independently as needed
  • Excellent communication, organizational and creative problem-solving skills
  • Experience with the following GIS software platforms: Esri ArcGIS (Online and ArcGIS Pro) and QGIS
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud graphics platform a plus
  • Positive attitude with proactive approach
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office – particularly with Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  Residency Requirement

  Must work from the United States and authorized to work in the United States throughout the summer 2021 internship dates. This internship is 100% remote.
