Commencement Ceremony Opportunity for Graduating Students!

Hello Graduating Students!

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! If you want to make your graduation experience more special, the Geography Department has an exciting opportunity for you all!

For the first time in recent history, the department is going to select a student speaker to give a speech for the Geographical Sciences/ Anthropology Commencement Ceremony on May 20, 2017. This opportunity is open to all students participating in the commencement! If you want a chance to reflect on your experience these past few years with all of your peers, consider applying for this opportunity!

Applications are due by April 14 and can be accessed by clicking here.

There is not a set format for your speech, so you're free to craft it as you like! We'd love to hear about your fond memories and accomplishments with the department or at UMD, in general.

A basic template you could use to outline your speech could go as follows:

a. Greeting members of the audience on behalf of the graduating class
b. Ability to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class
c. The means to reflect upon the past few years
d. The capability to convey a message for the future

The time limit for this speech is 5 minutes.

If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Hall (ahall2@umd.edu). We hope you apply for this wonderful opportunity!

*Finalists will be notified by April 21.

Apply to be a Member of the BSOS Dean's Student Advisory Council!

Attention BSOS Students!

Do you want to gain leadership experience while also being able to voice important matters that could better the undergraduate experience? If so, please consider applying for the BSOS Dean's Student Advisory Council (DSAC)!

The Geographical Sciences department has not been represented recently and it is important that our perspectives and concerns are heard! The DSAC influences decisions made at the college-level, like how certain budgets are allocated, and we would love to have our department's opinions and concerns brought the discussion. More information on the BSOS DSAC can be found here.

New Sustainable Development Course (Summer 2017)

Are you interested in issues of sustainable development and culture?

Announcing the University of Maryland Summer Session I Course:
ANTH 298E: Anthropological Approaches to Sustainable Development

This is a CORE course counting toward SB: Behavioral and Social Sciences; it also counts as a Social and Human Dimensions elective for the Sustainability Studies Minor.

This is an ONLINE COURSE.  Students do not need to be on campus to take this course.

Course Description:
This course is an introduction to anthropological approaches to sustainable development. The material will cover an overview of the history of sustainable development, major development and environmental theories, and development strategies as they relate to an anthropological concern for an integrated, holistic, comparative, and humane approach to sustainable development. We will examine the relationship between social well-being and the conservation of natural resources, and we will take a critical approach to common assumptions about this relationship. We will also look at practical applications of an anthropological approach to project methodology. The overall aim of this course is to engender a more context-based and culturally aware approach to sustainable development.
