GIS + Drone Internship - Summer 2016

A DC based services company called Measure, is actively recruiting either an undergraduate (juniors & seniors only) or graduate GIS Intern for their Summer 2016 internship program. 

The intern will work in our Data Engineering department and would help to process, analyze and deliver imagery taken from commercial drones, and will gain valuable experience in a rapidly growing industry.

Position: GIS Intern
Location: Measure HQ, Washington, DC
We are looking for a motivated, self-starting individual with a strong academic background to assist our Data Engineering department for the summer of 2016. The ideal candidate will have a background in GIS and be excited about the growing commercial drone industry. S/he will also be energetic, hardworking, and able to show a demonstrated record of academic and professional success. S/he will think creatively, make well-reasoned decisions, and express his or her ideas clearly and succinctly in writing. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills. The position will be held from May through August 2016.
Responsibilities:
The GIS Intern will primarily help process and analyze data collected by drones in commercial operations. Additional responsibilities include:
• Create advanced analytics from drone imagery using both manual and automatic tools
• Coordinate with the Drone Engineering and Flight Operations departments to ensure the right types of imagery is captured
• Perform initial quality assessment/quality control (QA/QC) of data before, during, and after processing
• Ensure all data has appropriate metadata
• Create maps and other graphics to be used in marketing materials, proposals, operating plans, etc.
• Research new and emerging technologies in the geospatial industry as they relate to drones
Interns are integral members of the Measure team and are actively involved in all aspects of the business.
Requirements:
Candidate must be a student pursuing a bachelor’s (juniors & seniors only) or master’s degree in GIS, Geography, or Computer Science (with a strong interest in GIS or remote sensing) at an accredited university with experience or strong interest in working within a start-up culture. Student must have a GPA of at least 3.0. Proof of ability to work in the United States is required.
Qualifications / Skills Include:
• An appetite to do “whatever it takes” in a rapidly changing start-up environment
• Familiarity with various sensors used in image acquisition and the type of data each sensor captures
• Knowledge of remote sensing principles such as projections, orthorectification, mosaic imaging, etc.
• Strong preference for previous experience with Pix4D or Agisoft Photoscan
• Working proficiency in ArcMap or QGIS
• Experience creating web maps in ArcGIS Online, Google Maps or Mapbox
• Experience coding with Python desired
• Experience with Amazon Web Services desired
• Interest and/or experience in flying RC aircraft or drones
• Photography/videography experience helpful
• Ability to think critically and solve problems creatively
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Organized and highly attentive to detail
• Unquestionable ethics, integrity, and commitment to excellence
• Ability to work independently
• Drive and enthusiasm with a team orientation
• Flexibility in the face of obstacles and sense of humor
• Fluent knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook
