Intern for a Day: The fall 2019 Intern for a Day matching process is wrapped up, and 310 undergraduate students matched with one of 150 host options! BSOS was the most represented college, making up 30% of total students. Additionally, several of the majors with the highest number of students placed are in BSOS, including: PSYC (27), GVPT (16), ECON (15), HESP (14), and CCJS (14). Thank you for spreading the word about this great event! 

Geographical Sciences Career & Internship Fair: Eighty-seven (87) students attended the event and networked with employers from 14 organizations. Attendees learned about organizations, current job/internship openings, and graduate programs in fields of Geography and GIS. Thanks for co-hosting this event, Department of Geographical Sciences! 

Applied Economics Career & Internship Fair: A total of 134 students and alumni attended this event and met with employers from 22 organizations. While the majority of attendees were ECON students, a handful of students came from other BSOS majors including GVPT, PSYC, and ANTH to explore career options and apply for openings! 

BSOS Experience Funds Application

Apply today for BSOS Winter/Spring 2020 Undergraduate Experience Funds! These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service learning, and professional or academic conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to activities like travel/transportation expenses, professional attire, and other opportunity costs (for example: the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship). If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an unpaid opportunity, I encourage you to apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds. Applications for Winter/Spring 2020 experiences are due no later than December 1.  Click here to apply. Before submitting your application, make sure to review the eligibility criteria. African Studies Minor Kickoff Event

The African-American Studies Department cordially invites you to its African Studies Minor Kickoff Event. AASD is hosting a talk by Howard University Professor Jean-Michel Mabeko-Tali on Monday, November 18 at 6 pm in 2102 Shoemaker. There will be a short talk, discussion and Q and A session. Refreshments will be served. 

This event will also introduce our new African Studies Minor.  The African Studies Minor focuses on the history, culture, politics, and economics of the peoples who populate the continent of Africa. As an interdisciplinary field of study, the minor will provide students with an understanding of the historical and cultural contexts that have and continue to shape political, economic and social development in Africa.

UMD Wind Turbine Team

Interested in using your skills to help the green energy transition and advance wind energy research?
Join the UMD 'Wind Terpines' team!
We have a particular interest in students who have studied geography. Our wind turbine research depends heavily on mapping wind potential, soil properties, populations, and other parameters relevant to wind turbine business development.
We are competing in the Department of Energy's Collegiate Wind Competition.
We are constructing prototype wind turbines, researching electronics and aerodynamics.
doing civil, legal, economic, and environmental work for site planning.
We will be running a seminar series on wind energy.
Join us on Mondays from 3-4pm in ITV 1111 for our weekly GBM!
