Patrizia Pelingon joined the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD) this past May as the nonprofit's Program Coordinator, following graduating in Anthropology and Biological Sciences in December 2020. Since joining ISD, she has helped execute internal operations and supported projects in disaster resiliency and preparedness, economic development, and small business technical assistance. She has previous experience in teaching, guest experience, and student leadership. Patrizia is also interested in health equity and improving health outcomes for those in vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities.

Andrew Reece, CCJS & GVPT '10 | Senior Crime Analyst at the Roanoke Police Department

Andrew Reece joined the Roanoke Police department in 2016 as a crime analyst. Now a senior crime analyst, Andrew concentrates primarily on crime series, trends/patterns, hot spot analysis, and various data requests that come from inside and outside the department. Prior to working in crime analysis, Andrew worked in bank fraud investigations at Wells Fargo, served as a communications officer for the Virginia Tech Police Department, and also did government contract work for the US Department of Justice.

As undergraduate course registration approaches, I wanted to send an email in the hopes that you all will promote our course UNIV362: Designing Your Life After College to your juniors and seniors (students with 60+ credits).

Consider taking UNIV362: Designing Your Life After College!

Students with at least 60 credits are eligible to enroll in UNIV362: Designing Your Life After College. This innovative course helps students plan their transition out of college and into early adulthood. Faculty and experts from around campus and the country come together to provide a hands-on learning experience. Students gain a grasp on important financial concepts such as budgeting, understanding the stock market, and managing a retirement account. The course faculty also coach students through career development, the steps to secure an apartment or mortgage, understanding benefit packages, and negotiating job offers.

Students are coached through developing a life plan that will help those who have no clear path after graduation and students who have a set vision for what they want to accomplish. We encourage any student interested in preparing for life after college to enroll in UNIV362.

Opwall Biodiversity Research Opportunities for Students

 

Opportunities to gain fieldwork experience whilst contributing to biodiversity & conservation research

Operation Wallacea has run biodiversity research expeditions for the last 25 years to a series of sites (mainly biodiversity hotspots) worldwide (www.opwall.com), helping university students from around the world gain valuable experience and get their hands dirty with real biodiversity research. From dense jungle and European grasslands to coral reefs and Mediterranean seagrass meadows, our network of more than 200 academics assist in developing and leading cutting edge research projects that help to inform local conservation management strategies. More than 575 papers including some in high impact journals such as Nature and PNAS have been published from these annual programs, so by joining the field surveys you are guaranteed a high level of academic involvement. By working alongside these academics, students either gain broad experience as research assistants or gather data for their independent research project (thesis). The expeditions vary in length from 1 to 6 weeks during the months of June to August.

START Spring 2022 Remote Internship Program Now Accepting Applications!

The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism (START), based here at the University of Maryland, is now accepting applications for its Spring 2022 Internship Program!

The priority application deadline, for best consideration, is on Monday, November 1st at 11:59pm ET, and the final application deadline is on Sunday, November 14th at 11:59pm ET. We were hoping you might be able to share the information below with any students and other contacts who you think may be interested in these opportunities! START is currently offering its program remotely and plans to continue doing so in the spring. Accepted interns may have the option to work in person pending further public health developments, but all will retain the ability to continue working remotely if desired. To put these positions in perspective, your OA's were the ones that you spent your orientation day with, and you probably spoke with an Office Assistant if you called to sign up or ask questions about orientation!
