Two AGI Scholarship Opportunities for Geoscience Students

For those pursuing Master's or doctoral degress, see below

Dear Colleagues,

The American Geosciences Institute has two scholarship programs for the 2021-2022 academic year.  Please pass along the information to interested and eligible students.

Harriet Evelyn Wallace Scholarship

There are two awards available with this scholarship program for 2021-2022.  The scholarship is available for female students pursuing a master's or doctoral degree at an accredited institution of higher education in a recognized geoscience program. Each scholarship award is $5,000.

One master's candidate and one doctoral candidate will be selected for the 2021-2022 scholarship cycle. Applicants may either be entering graduate school or already enrolled in a graduate program in the geosciences.  We strongly encourage incoming master's students to apply. Successful applicants will be thesis-based, full-time students and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The application deadline for the 2021-2022 academic year is February 7th, 2021.

Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession

This scholarship is a $5,000 award to support geoscience graduate studies by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who self-identifies as a member of an underrepresented minority (Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color) and will be entering a graduate geoscience program for the first time.  To be eligible, a student must have completed, or be within two semesters of completing, a bachelor’s degree at a recognized geoscience program and not actively enrolled in a graduate program.

The application deadline is February 21, 2021. The scholarship winner will be notified in April 2021. To learn more, see https://www.americangeosciences.org/workforce/agi-scholarship-advancing-diversity-geoscience-profession

Please send any inquiries regarding to these scholarships to Christopher Keane at keane@americangeosciences.org.

We look forward to reviewing your students' applications!

University of Oklahoma Graduate Program

[Remote Sensing] : Two Graduate Assistantships (Master's and/or Doctoral) in GIScience at New Mexico State University

Dr. Michaela Buenemann from the Department of Geography at New Mexico State University is seeking Master of Applied Geography (MAG) and PhD Geography students broadly interested in remote sensing and/or GIS, predictive modeling, and land system science, to support funded research projects starting in Fall 2021. Funding support will include a monthly stipend, tuition and fees, health insurance, conference travel, and access to computing equipment in the Spatial Applications Research Center (SpARC) at New Mexico State University. The contracts will be renewable annually based on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

One master's student is sought to support a Natural Resources Conservation Service project aimed at developing a geospatial framework for mapping inactive acequias (communal irrigation ditches). The student should have an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in geography, computer science, or a related discipline, and experience in spatial analysis, predictive modeling, and programming (e.g., R or Python).

One master's or doctoral student is sought to support a Natural Resources Conservation Service project aimed at developing a geospatial framework for monitoring and assessing land cover (especially mesquite) dynamics in rangelands. The student should have an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in geography, environmental science, or a related discipline, and experience in remote sensing and dryland ecology.

Funded students will join an interdisciplinary team working to enhance our understanding of human-environment systems through mixed-methods research that combines remote sensing, GIS, and quantitative and qualitative methods in physical and human geography. Students should be interested and able to work in this kind of environment, committed to social and environmental justice, and self-motivated. We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, equitable, just, and anti-racist team. We strongly encourage members of marginalized and underrepresented groups to apply.

If interested, please email Dr. Buenemann (elabuen@nmsu.edu) with (i) a brief cover letter describing your research interests, research experience, and career goals, (ii) your CV, including contact information for three professional references, and (iii) your transcripts (unofficial okay). Following a review of applicants and interviews, competitive applicants will be asked to submit an official application for the Master of Applied Geography Program at New Mexico State University or the New Mexico Doctoral Program in Geography, which is offered jointly by New Mexico State University and the University of New Mexico. The application deadline for both programs is 15 January 2021, but interested applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Dr. Buenemann by 1 January 2021.
