Remote Sensing Specialist (Entry Level) at Environmental Resources Management

ERM is seeking a self-starting, dynamic Remote Sensing Specialist to join our consulting firm in Washington, DC. As part of our Geospatial Team, you will provide high-quality analytical support to ERM clients while working closely with other team members. Assignments will be primarily desktop work but will include domestic and international travel on occasion. Ability to work with vector and raster data and to conduct remote sensing analyses is required.

The successful candidate will be a highly skilled and confident user of ArcGIS and related software who has substantial experience using modern geospatial approaches to conduct technical analysis and investigation in their own environmental, social or other field of specialization.
This is an excellent opportunity for a junior professional looking to advance his or her career level with a global sustainability leader.

Requirements
BA/BS or Master’s degree in a related discipline.
1 to 3 years of experience.
Demonstrated interest in business consulting and environmental/social issues (through related coursework, previous employment, or personal endeavors).
Experience with conducting quantitative analysis using full suite of ESRI software. Understanding of other software a plus (Tableau, ENVI, Erdas, IDRISI). In addition, programming skills in Python, Torch and API development are desired
Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health & Safety protocols.
Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills; experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports.

PLCY Summer Study Abroad in London and Vienna

The UMD School of Public Policy is offering a for-credit international graduate course where students will have the unique opportunities to visit international organizations and think tanks working on different policy issues on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and interact with European and American scientists, researchers, and policy makers working on WMD topics.

The course will take place in London, UK and Vienna, Austria on May 27th to June 8, 2019. Students on this trip will take occasional day trips to sites like, Porton Down and Salisbury, UK, in addition to their own free time to explore both capitals.

Undergraduate students may also take this class and it will be counted for PLCY388Y: Critical Policy Issues on Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Southern California Earthquake Center – Internship Opportunities

Applications for Summer 2019 undergraduate internships with the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) are now being accepted. Learn more and apply at https://www.scec.org/internships.

 

SCEC offers two internship programs, each providing compensation of at least $6500:

 

The Undergraduate Studies in Earthquake Information Technology (UseIT) Program challenges teams of undergraduates of diverse backgrounds with real-world earthquake issues that require collaborative, interdisciplinary applications of earth science and information technology (including high performance computing).

 

The SCEC Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program pairs undergraduates with SCEC scientists at that researcher's institution or field site. Projects for SURE interns span the spectrum of earthquake science.

 

Applications received by February 8, will be considered in the first round of internship offers. Applications received after February 8 will be reviewed as needed.

2nd Annual GEOG Table Tennis Tournament

Want to get meet new people in the department? Please join us for the 2nd Annual Geography Table Tennis Tournament! 

Last year we had 24 players including many faculty members. The tournament lasts all semester and players meet once every week or two for their matches. At the end of the semester we'll hold a championship game with food and music for all to enjoy. 

All skill levels are invited and we have a beginner bracket for those still learning. If you are very new to the sport, let us know and we'll host a couple practice sessions where we will teach basics and review rules. This is a great opportunity to meet faculty, staff, graduate students, and your fellow undergraduates in the Department. 

Sign up for the tournament by Friday, February 8. Rules and bracket will be emailed to players by Monday, February 11.
