2018 Applications Now Open! Applications for the 2018 Data Science for Social Good Fellowships are now open. We're excited to expand the fellowship program and will be continuing the programs in Chicago and Portugal, as well as starting a new one with University of North Carolina at Charlotte. You can apply to be a Fellow, Data Science Mentor, or Project Manager based on your skills and interests. If you're a government agency, non profit or another type of organization working on social good, you should apply as a project partner. We are also fundraising for the program. DSSP and DVUP

Meets TuTh 3:30-4:45 and Tu 2-3:15 

This class offers students an opportunity to combine service with scholarship and engage issues of literacy, diversity, and equity in the American education system. We will work with ninth grade students at local Northwestern High School to explore the ways writing can be used as a tool for social change.

In collaboration with the high school students, we will host a performance event that opens a dialogue surrounding a pressing social issue. In addition to tutoring and mentoring, this class requires a good deal of writing. You will write multiple reflections, a literacy narrative, a creative composition, and publicity materials. You will conduct independent research and will be expected to switch fluidly between academic, creative, professional, and hybrid genres. We will also focus on developing critical self-awareness of our own relationships with literacy, writing, and dialects of power.

In addition to two weekly 75-minute meetings, this class requires commitment to an off-campus service-learning component for about 75 minutes, once a week (Tuesdays from 2:00-3:15, including transportation time).   There will also be a fee collected for paperwork and background checks required for volunteering at NHS. The course has no prerequisites, but completion of ENGL101 is strongly recommended. 

Individuals interested in taking this class as ENGL388C, the Community Engagement Internship, can do so by signing up through the English Undergraduate Studies Office.  This course fulfills the Scholarship-in-Practice and Diversity--Understanding Plural Societies General Education requirements.

National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) 2018 Student Volunteer Internship Opportunities

About NCPC:

NCPC is the federal planning agency for the National Capital Region. NCPC preserves and enhances the extraordinary historical, cultural, and natural resources and federal assets of the National Capital Region to support the needs of the federal government and enrich the lives of the region’s visitors, workers, and residents. The 12-member Commission meets monthly to adopt, approve, or provide advice on plans and projects that impact the nation’s capital and surrounding areas. 

Opportunities: 

NCPC considers applications year-round from eligible students interested in a potential internship. While student internships at NCPC are unpaid, students gain experience in the federal planning and policymaking environment while working alongside NCPC staff. In addition to working in an office environment, interns also gain field experience by conducting walk-throughs and site visits throughout the nation’s capital. To be considered for this program, students must meet certain program eligibility requirements such as a minimum of half-time current enrollment in an accredited institution, as well as any specific skills indicated below:

The Physical Planning Division is seeking interns to perform comprehensive technical research analysis, and assist with graphic and presentation work in landscape architecture, architecture, and/or urban planning matters. Education in these or related fields and strong organizational, technical, and research skills; proficiency with CAD/GIS and Adobe Creative Suite is highly preferred. This division conducts planning and design work to address executive and legislative directives, emerging issues, or implementation of Commission policies focused on physical features or a specific geography. Interns may support the National Mall Streetscape Manual Update and/or Pennsylvania Avenue Initiative. 

The Policy and Research Division is seeking an intern to participate in several planning, research, and urban design activities that may involve the Smart Cities Initiative, Comprehensive Plan, Viewshed Studies, and Commemoration. This division researches critical issues and opportunities facing the National Capital Region. It evaluates policy options and priorities, and works on the congressionally mandated Comprehensive Plan and Federal Capital Improvements Program.

The Office of Public Engagement is seeking an intern to assist with the planning and execution of public events and outreach, to include social media, media releases, and Commission materials, as well as to research topics involving urban planning and design such as flooding, commemoration, and parks. This division coordinates outreach and participation on all aspects of NCPC’s initiatives and activities with the public and media, and fosters partnerships to address planning challenges in the National Capital Region.

Adele’s Circle of Women 2018 Scholarship Application

Adele’s Circle of Women 2018 Scholarship Application

Adele’s Circle of Women Scholarship grants annual scholarships to help deserving students who advance the role of women and girls in their academic studies and activities, who plan to further this leadership in their personal and professional lives.  The scholarship seeks to aid emerging student leaders and/or recognize accomplished student leaders.  The five scholarships provide a $500 award to a current University of Maryland undergraduate or graduate student.  Established in 2015, the Adele’s Circle of Women Scholarship is generously funded by Terp alumnae. 

Eligibility Requirements for five (5) $500 scholarships:

• Previous recipients of Adele’s Circle of Women Scholarship are not eligible to apply.
• Current UMD student (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Emerging Student Leaders:
    • One (1) First Year Student
    • One (1) Second Year Student
  • Accomplished Student Leaders:
    • One (1) Third Year Student
    • One (1) Fourth Year Student
    • One (1) Graduate Student
• In good academic standing with the University
• Demonstrates good citizenship and a positive attitude

Applications are due no later than February 3, 2018 to be considered for a 2017-2018 award.  Awards will be given at Adele’s Circle of Women spring event – HerStory.  All applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the event to be held on Thursday evening, April 13, 2018 in the Stamp Student Union.
