National Geographic Magazine International Editions Internship

Summary
This National Geographic Magazine International Editions internship is regarded as an opportunity to learn and gain valuable exposure to related businesses within National Geographic. It provides guidance and professional experience in magazine publishing and international publishing. The NGM-International Editions internship will aid in the development and production of the local international versions of National Geographic Magazine. 
 
The NGM-IE intern will work closely with the department’s Multimedia Editor and Production Specialist in learning how to provide quality control translation reviews, manage locally created material, research for local features, understand details of NGM photo contracts, and also assist with various editorial tasks. Interns will gain an understanding of the way the photo, design, and editorial departments work together to produce the magazine and learn how the production process works. The applicant should be prepared to analyze copy, identify core facts, verify information, contact expert consultants via email and phone, and manage schedules to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities
  1. Editorial & Research Skills: Assist with creation and researching of in-depth explanations of NGM English language texts to provide to 40 language editions to assist in translations. Assist in researching archival images and corresponding documentation to determine current publication status for local-language publications. (30%) 
  2. Translation Review: Assist with liaising between freelance translators, for managing the quality control process for text. Assist with tracking translations and resulting `reviews' from translators. (20%)
  3. Writing and Design Skills: Based on skill level and desire, there may be the opportunity to assist with creation of layout and text for publication in local-language editions. (20%)
  4. Management Skills: Maintaining staff contact lists on intranet site, distribution and recording of print copies of the local-language editions, as invoices, and assisting with recording local-language content in system database. (20%)
  5. Communication Skills: Learn how to operate effectively in a professional office environment by attending meetings, corresponding with external partners and consultants. (10%)

Minimum Education Required
Applicant should be college junior, senior or graduate student pursuing a degree in journalism/English, Geography or Linguistics preferred.  Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply. 

Knowledge and Skills Required
Knowledge of Microsoft Office package (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) mandatory.  Fluency in a foreign language a plus.
