Internship Description Summary
The internship with the Mapping Team within the Storytelling Division will work on projects to build and coordinate cross-departmental mapping efforts. The intern will work with our Education, Explorer, and Digital teams to help implement our mapping infrastructure and best practices for mapping and GIS. This work will include assessing the best tools, databases, and training resources applicable to solutions for these teams. Our ideal candidate is highly motivated, thinks creatively and understands the importance of geospatial tools, analysis, and storytelling for education and science.Internship Description
Five Principal Learning Responsibilities
- Enhance geospatial data research and organization skills (20%)
- Hone skills in analyzing online training resources for learning complex geospatial analysis and mapping techniques (20%)
- Gain exposure to NGS programs, team members, and strategic priorities (20%)
- Increase ability to work effectively in a team environment (20%)
- Expand knowledge of proprietary and open source GIS and mapping tools (20%)
Related Field of Study Required
Current undergraduate or graduate student working towards a degree in Geography or a related science or social science field that involves extensive use of geospatial tools, data and analysis. Student will need to be enrolled in school during the internship.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Ability to work well with others and independently as needed
- Excellent communication, organizational and creative problem-solving skills
- Experience with the following GIS software platforms: Esri ArcGIS (Online and ArcGIS Pro) and QGIS
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud graphics platform a plus
- Positive attitude with proactive approach
- Proficiency with Microsoft office – particularly with Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Residency Requirement
Must work from the United States and authorized to work in the United States throughout the summer 2021 internship dates. This internship is 100% remote.
Student's residency at the time of the internship must be in one of the following states in which NGS has an active employer withholding tax account:
