SESYNC Internship Opportunity

The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) at the University of Maryland is now accepting applications for faculty mentors and undergraduate interns for the 2016 SESYNC Undergraduate Summer Internship Program.

The goals of the program are to:

§  Provide students with a research or work experience that contributes towards the research or program goals of the mentors.
§  Enhance student understanding of the complex nature of socially relevant environmental problems.
§  Introduce students to research approaches, particularly the synthesis approach, used to address socio-environmental problems.
§  Enhance student understanding of how scientific evidence may be used to inform decision making and policy with regard to environmental problems.

Internship positions are full-time (40 hours/week) from June 6–August 12, 2016. Interns will be paid $11/hour by SESYNC.

GIS/Spatial Ecology Internship at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute

The Conservation GIS Lab (https://nationalzoo.si.edu/SCBI/ConservationGIS/projects/) at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) is seeking interns, to start immediately.  We focus on conservation applications of GIS and satellite remote sensing for research and management of endangered species. Most of our projects focus on charismatic endangered species that are managed at our facilities and for which we have field ecological and conservation programs in the wild.  Examples are Asian elephants, Przewalski’s horse, Asian wild dog, and giant panda. 

 The role:  

·         Utilizing species distribution model to predict suitable range of endangered species and their habitat

·         Analyzing spatial data derived from satellite imagery, remotely sensed data, and GPS-tracked animal movement data;

·         Integration and analysis of data in GIS;

·         Statistical analysis of species and habitat data and the development of automated data processing and analysis tools;

Interns will be involved in a few research projects and be advised directly by spatial ecologists at the Conservation GIS Lab. Interns are also expected to assist with everyday lab management and help with short GIS training courses. 

Required Skills & Experience:

• A good knowledge of computers, programming and statistics. 
• Basic knowledge of GIS (preferably ArcGIS or QGIS), remote sensing are desirable.
• Experience with programming software (R/Matlab/Python/etc.).  

The internship includes a modest stipend and free dormitory-style housing.  Internship applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and positions are available immediately.  Please send letter of interest and resume to SCBI.GIS@gmail.com. The Natural Resources Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, is seeking a talented, dedicated undergraduate student to assist trial attorneys in our motions based and trial practices during the summer of 2016.

The docket of the Natural Resource Section (NRS) is a kaleidoscope of diverse and challenging resource issues ranging from litigation to protect such national treasures as Florida’s Everglades and the remnant old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest, to protecting the federal interest in the country’s vital water resources, to defense of the public fisc against claims by private property owners for alleged “takings” and by Native Americans for alleged trust breaches. And by virtue of our responsibility for all litigation under the National Environmental Policy Act, we defend the decision-making processes of virtually every federal agency. Recent examples include litigation over agency decisions related to the Gulf oil spill, renewable energy projects, and wildlife management in national parks. Our attorneys practice in both Federal and State courts.

Intern duties may include reviewing administrative records compiled by agencies in defense of actions brought under NEPA to locate information supporting legal arguments, reviewing depositions, performing basic legal research, and drafting internal memoranda. Interns may also have the opportunity to observe court proceedings. The work will require an organized, motivated individual with strong analytical skills and an attention to detail. Demonstrated interest in the law, including natural resource and land use issues is a plus.

Interns will not receive compensation, but can receive course credit. U.S. Citizenship and security clearance are required. Applicants must be in at least their junior year of college as of the Fall of 2016 and be in good standing. NASA Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems Office Internship Opportunity

Opportunity Title:			Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems Office Educational and Geospatial
Description/Objective (specific student assignment):			Climate change in Arctic and Boreal regions is unfolding faster than anywhere else on Earth, resulting in reduced Arctic sea ice, thawing of permafrost soils, decomposition of long-frozen organic matter, widespread changes to lakes, rivers, coastlines, and alterations of ecosystem structure and function. NASA's Terrestrial Ecology Program is planning a major field campaign, the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE), which will seek a better understanding of the vulnerability and resilience of ecosystems and society to this changing environment. The NASA Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems Office (CCEO) will support the ABoVE field campaign through providing scientific and logistical support to funded scientists. A highly motivated and organized individual working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in an environmental/earth science discipline (or related field) is sought to aid the CCEO's efforts. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and will assist the project team in developing outreach materials for ABoVE. A proficiency with geographic information systems (GIS) is desired, such as ArcGIS Desktop, to aid in the development of geospatial data products to be used by ABoVE.
Expected opportunity outcome (i.e. research, final report, poster presentation, etc.):			A potential summer project could be the development of a web-based interactive story map to showcase the social-ecological aspects and study locations of the ABoVE campaign.
Student's Computer and/or Special Skills:			Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as ArcGIS Desktop and/or other geoprocessing and geospatial information software. Experience with ArcGIS Online and RESTful services a plus.

Noyce Scholars Program

2 Internship Opportunities
The first is the Noyce Scholars Program which offers $14,000 to junior and senior students who major in a STEM field and are interested in pursuing teaching after college.

The second is the Noyce Internship Program which offers $2,700 - $3,000 to rising sophomores and juniors who major in a STEM field and are interested in working in education over the summer.
