Spring 2022 Maryland Policy Fellowship-Chesapeake Climate Action Network

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network is seeking a talented Policy Fellow to assist the Maryland Director with research, policy development, and outreach during the 2022 legislative session. This fellowship is reserved for candidates of color seeking to break into the climate world, especially students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, although qualifying candidates from any school are encouraged to apply.

About Us

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the largest and oldest group in the Chesapeake region of Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. dedicated exclusively to building a powerful grassroots movement to fight climate change. We envision an equitable energy future where truly clean sources of power — efficiency, solar and wind — sustain every aspect of our lives, and dirty fossil fuels are phased out.

Our Maryland team is working on bold campaigns that would result in policies to reduce emissions at a scale that matches the climate crisis the state is facing. For over a decade, we have been pushing the envelope of what’s “politically possible” in Maryland, using every tool inside and outside of the box – from organizing to lobbying to bringing lawsuits. Alongside our activists and allies, we have banned fracking in the state, passed the strongest clean electricity standard in any state with a Republican Governor, and paved the way for the coming offshore wind development — and we are just getting started.

About the Position

The Maryland Policy fellow will work alongside our Maryland team to promote comprehensive climate policy during the 2022 legislative session. A successful candidate will have the skills, passion and commitment to take on one of the biggest problems facing our planet in a state well-positioned to tackle it. Maryland is a large, diverse state uniquely at risk to the effects of climate change. A successful candidate must be able to quickly learn about the climate challenges facing the area, the policies on the table to address these challenges, and the legislative process.

What You Will Do

The primary responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Climate Change Issue Education and Advocacy
    • Work alongside CCAN’s Maryland team and our allies to promote bold climate policy in the 2022 Legislative Session
    • Contribute to testimony and lobbying materials for key pieces of legislation with the opportunity to testify and lobby alongside the Maryland Director
    • Attend/assist in organizing key campaign mobilizations, such as rallies, lobby days, or other events
  • Research and content creation
    • Assist the Maryland Director and policy team with issue research and the creation of materials such as factsheets, white papers, blog posts, and social media content relevant to the 2022 legislative priorities
  • Administrative duties and CCAN team expectations
    • Attend internal meetings to learn about and support the work CCAN does across the region on the state and local level
    • Assist the CCAN field team with grassroots organizing and outreach as it pertains to the 2022 legislative session and Maryland policy goals.
    • Work with and learn from the various departments within CCAN including communications, MD policy, and field

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will display the following capabilities and qualities:

  • Familiarity with climate issues is a plus and a passion to learn more about Maryland climate policy is a must.
  • Commitment to environmental justice tenets and amplifying the voices of those being victimized by extreme extraction and the effects of climate change, including; Indigenous American, African American, low and moderate income communities, rural communities, and struggling farm families.
  • Strong dedication to justice, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to work with social media and digital tools to convey complex ideas in accessible ways
  • Ability to work independently while working effectively with a team and seeking feedback and support when needed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The Details

CCAN is an equal opportunity employer, committed to a diverse workforce. We value bringing a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives on staff because it makes us smarter and more effective at what we do and, ultimately, we want our staff and supporters to reflect the communities we organize. We are seeking to recruit individuals from underrepresented groups to apply for this position.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this position will rely heavily on remote project management and the utilization of digital tools to move people to action from the safety of their homes. However, you must be physically located in Maryland, DC, or Virginia.

Because the timeline of this position will overlap with the Maryland Legislative Session, some in-person work may be available but will be determined by local public health precautions, candidate comfort level, and vaccination status. If health conditions allow, this position may involve travel throughout the state. Mileage reimbursement is available for all CCAN-required travel except travel to and from the office (commute).  The Maryland Policy Fellow reports to the Maryland Director, and occasionally works with the Maryland Grassroots Coordinator.

Compensation is $15.00 per hour for 20 hours per week during the Winter/Spring semester over a period of 15 weeks.

How to Apply

Please fill out this Google form application by November 21, 2021, 11:59pm EST. You will be prompted to answer a series of short questions and asked to submit a resume. A writing sample is optional.

Spring 2022 Maryland Grassroots Internship-Chesapeake Climate Action Network

DESCRIPTION

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) works with partners across the state to promote renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and stop the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure. We’re looking for smart, talented students for spring internships to stand up and take climate action. Apply today!

ABOUT CCAN
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the only group in the Chesapeake region of Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. dedicated exclusively to building a powerful grassroots movement to fight climate change. Our mission is to build the kind of movement it will take to put our region on the path to climate stability, while using our proximity to the nation’s capital to inspire action in neighboring states, around the country and around the world.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
We have won some big victories in Maryland. We were the first state with natural gas reserves to legislatively ban fracking, and we have the strongest renewable electricity standard of any state with bipartisan control of the government.

Now, we are taking proactive steps to stop the expansion of gas in our state by working to ensure all MD buildings are fully electric!

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • A driving passion to enact structural change to address the causes of climate change and win

Be Informed Virtual Lecture Series: Meredith Gore, Nov. 17 from 12-1pm

 Event Date and Time

Virtual - ZOOM Link to be provided after registration

Be informed

Be Informed: Virtual Lecture Series is a virtual continuing education series hosted by the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland showcasing the research and expertise of our faculty in pursuit of innovative solutions to the challenges facing our global community. A range of topics including psychology, social justice, political science, human behavior and more will be addressed. This month's talk, Interdisciplinary Intelligence Mapping of Illicit Global Environmental Change" will be presented by Dr. Meredith Gore.

ABOUT THE TALK

Interdisciplinary Intelligence Mapping of Illicit Global Environmental Change

Scientific understanding of human behavior is critical for improving humans’ ability to predict and adapt to global environmental change.

The type of behavior that society defines or perceives as driving illicit global environmental change can be omnipresent, but we have mostly lacked an effective mechanism for thinking and talking about, and addressing, the problem. The emerging field of "conservation criminology" offers a model for understanding the types of illicit human behavior and the emotions, cognitions, and institutions that are a cause and a consequence of illicit global environmental change.

Join Dr. Meredith Gore who will introduce key dimensions of conservation criminology and provide three widely different examples of how interdisciplinary intelligence mapping can enhance scientific understanding of illicit global environmental change. Dr. Gore will present findings from recent fieldwork:

  • Illegal rosewood logging in Madagascar’s northeastern rainforests
  • Urban wild meat trafficking into Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Sea cucumber trafficking (illegal fishing) in Yucatan, Mexico

Read more about Dr. Gore's research

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr. Meredith Gore is a conservation social scientist. As an Associate Professor in the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland, she uses risk concepts to build new understanding of human-environment relationships. Her research is designed to build evidence for action. The majority of her projects can be described as convergence research on conservation issues such as wildlife trafficking, illegal logging, fishing and mining.

Meredith received her PhD in Natural Resource Policy and Management from Cornell University, MA in Environment and Resource Policy from George Washington University, and BA in Anthropology and Environmental Studies from Brandeis University. From 2006-2020, she was faculty at Michigan State University. She is a National Academies of Sciences Jefferson Science Fellow, US Department of State Embassy Science Fellow and Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leader.

11/04: Dr. Dustin Duncan, Impact of Neighborhoods on Population Health and Health Disparities

On Thursday, November 4th, at 3:45-5:00 pm, this week's seminar will feature Dr. Dustin Duncan, Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. He will give a talk on Impact of Neighborhoods on Population Health and Health Disparities. Please see the attached flyer or the text below for connection details and abstract. The talk will be on Zoom.

Abstract: The field of neighborhoods and health (sometimes referred to as spatial epidemiology) has grown exponentially in the last twenty years, especially since the publication of the first edition of Neighborhoods and Health edited by Ichiro Kawachi and Lisa Berkman in 2003. There is a large literature on the influence of neighborhoods on health to date. Many reviews and technical reports of accumulated neighborhoods and health research have been conducted. For example, in 2017, Bauermeister and colleagues conducted a review on multi-level studies of neighborhoods and HIV prevention and care outcomes among sexual minority men who have sex with men. However, relatively few neighborhood studies have focused on sexual minority populations. Neighborhood studies that have taken an intersectional approach, e.g., by focusing on sexual identity as well as race/ethnicity simultaneously are even more scarce. This talk aims to:

1) provide a historical overview of neighborhoods and health research,
2) examine recent directions in neighborhoods and health research, and
3) touch on methodological areas including the issue of spatial misclassification.

The talk will overview applications of geospatial methods to study neighborhoods in population health and health disparities research with examples from one of Dr. Duncan’s prospective cohort studies, which use novel geospatial methods. The N2 (Neighborhoods and Networks) Cohort Study is a cohort study including 600 HIV-negative and HIV-positive Black gay, bisexual and other sexual minority men in Chicago IL, Jackson MS, and New Orleans and Baton Rouge LA (Grant Numbers: R01MH112406 and U01PS005122). The cohort focuses on advanced global positioning systems (GPS) methods to understand how activity space neighborhoods (defined as the local areas within which people move during their daily activities) influence HIV prevention and care outcomes
