The City of Bowie is seeking an individual to assist with a variety of GIS assignments and other duties as assigned, throughout the summer with the potential for additional work in the fall. The scope of work will be supporting a mix of data integration and maintenance, web, and mobile GIS projects.
The intern will be provided minimal supervision by the Director of Information Technology and will report directly to the GIS Specialist. Hours are projected at 30-37.5 hours dependent on work load over the course of the year. This internship will include primarily office assignments with some field work utilizing tablets and GPS units as needed.
This position is for approximately for 15 weeks.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
* Update, create, edit and retrieve information from spatial databases.
* Enter data into GIS through digitizing scanned drawings or conversion of other sources. This includes digitizing civil engineering and architectural drawings, interpret and enter geographic data.
* Analyze geographic relationships among varying types of data.
* Experience using Microsoft Office suite of software such as Word, Excel and Access.
* Operate and assist in the maintenance of GIS system hardware, software, plotter and other related equipment.
* Develop, design and update spatial datasets for integration with current system from various disparate sources.
* Assist with developing solutions for updating, database maintenance and collection using ArcGIS online and feature services to integrate into current established workflows.
* Contribute to documentation of workflows and updating of metadata on new data layers.
* Produce maps as requested.
* Some field work may be required to assist with GPS data collection, ability to QA/QC.
* Provides preliminary troubleshooting with ESRI software users.
* Ability to work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
