Summer Course LARC151

The School of Architecture's new minor in Real Estate Development

Undergraduates with an interest in real estate can now complete a minor in real estate development. The minor will provide students with an overview of sustainable real estate development, including the development process; the basics of real estate finance; urban planning and design; and the unique roles played by government and the private sector.

The courses and minor will be open to all Maryland undergraduates with a GPA of 2.0 who have completed RDEV 250 with a C or better. RDEV 250 is offered in the Spring term.  The minor is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of the real estate industry and can be taken as a stepping-stone to more advanced graduate work in real estate or a related professional field.

Students will take 4 core classes and choose 1 elective from a wide range of classes in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Construction Management, Sustainability, Business, Economics, Political Science and Public Policy. Additionally, a specialty elective in real estate case studies is anticipated to be offered once the minor is approved.

Furthermore, students who complete the minor have a head start in pursuing a Masters of Real Estate Development: 9 credits for the Master’s will already be satisfied.

The minor will be of particular interest to students with interests in careers related to real estate and the built environment, such as architecture, business, mortgage banking, construction management, civil engineering, historic preservation, local government, non-profit housing, public-private partnerships, landscape architecture, urban planning or related entrepreneurial ventures.

In a short while, we will have more detailed information as well as an application available on the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation’s website: http://www.arch.umd.edu/.   The site is being re-designed right now, so there is currently limited information online.

Finally, students who are interested in the minor should plan on attending an information workshop early in the fall semester.  I will send you information regarding this once it is scheduled.
