National Geographic Magazine Fall Graphics Research Internship
Under the guidance of an experienced researcher, the intern will learn to report and research concepts and content for artwork, information graphics, and maps as needed for NGM print and online, and to ensure the accuracy of the resulting graphics.

Related Field of Study Required
Applicant should be a college junior, senior, or graduate student in the liberal arts, social sciences, or journalism. Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply.
Additional Knowledge and Skills Required
Experience with researching, reporting, and writing are preferred. Should be comfortable using MS Word and Excel. Some familiarity with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and ArcGIS is encouraged.

Responsibilities
- Reporting: Intern will learn to identify, locate, and understand multiple sources of information applicable to assigned articles or news stories. Intern will have the opportunity to interview subject experts in private and government agencies, academic institutions, and industry, and will be guided in preparing concise summaries for staff members, including examples of best visual references. (45%)
- Project Development: Intern will participate in defining key issues and determining the focus and direction of the graphic. By consulting with more experienced researchers, intern will learn to identify sensitive or controversial aspects and assess the balance of the graphic. (45%)
- Writing: Intern will be instructed in writing a text guide for each artwork, map, or information graphic to ensure that the original intent of the graphic element is being effectively communicated. By consulting closely with the graphic editor or designer, intern will understand how to determine when a graphic is clear and appropriately labeled. (10%)
