Boren Fellowship

BOREN FELLOWSHIP FOR LANGUAGE STUDY IN CRITICAL REGIONS
The Boren Fellowship is aimed at graduate students (US citizens) who want to study abroad for six months to a year in 2019-20 in non-traditional regions and countries, and who are interested in learning the languages of those areas. Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, the Middle East, and in some cases, Latin America. (Boren Fellowships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.)

Boren will continue to offer the Indonesian Flagship Languages Initiative (IFLI), to study Bahasa Indonesia; the South Asian Flagship Initiative (SAFLI) for the study of Hindi or Urdu;  and the African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) for the study of French, Portuguese, Swahili, Akan/Twi, Wolof, or Zulu. 

The Boren Fellowship is a U.S. Government-funded award that seeks applicants who have a strong interest in future Government service; the award carries a one-year federal service expectation.

Geospatial Engineer:
The individual performing this role will use their knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to configure solutions, implement workflows, create and provision data content, test enhancements and provide user support to Esri customers. This role can require desk-side support to mission analysts as well as participation in larger project teams providing support in the conception, construction, implementation and testing of GIS databases, applications, and production systems.

New faculty member Dr. Taylor Oshan is soliciting participants to give 3 minute "lightning talks" on a GIS topic of their choice. Have you worked on something recently that you'd like to share? Do you have a quirky interest related to something Geospatial? Share it with the Department! This event is WIDE OPEN! Last year we had talks ranging from "using remote sensing data to improve agricultural yields" to "what heck is Tactical Urbanism?" (click the link - it's pretty neat!)

Career Shuttle to the U.S. Census Bureau

Interested in gaining a better understanding of career paths available at the U.S. Census Bureau? This career shuttle will include information sessions led by staff in the Decennial Census and Economic Directorates of the Census Bureau that will highlight programs and examples of work completed. Participants will also gain knowledge of internship and job application tips. This visit will be of particular interest to undergraduate students studying Geography, Math, Economics, Survey Methodology, and Demography/Sociology. RSVP's are required


Intern for a Day in NYC during Winter Break


Intern for a Day: Winter Break in New York City

Intern for a Day is expanding to New York City over students' winter break (December 18, 2018 - January 25, 2019)!  The process is the same as the regular fall and spring Intern for a Day program, but the location is different.  The Big Apple, here we come!



Students must participate in a 30-minute orientation in order to have access to the application.  There are four (4) orientations for students to choose from.  Click on the date to RSVP:
Students will receive the application after attending one of the orientation sessions above.  Applications will be due Sunday, November 11 at 11:59pm.  

After the student is matched with a host, the student will connect with their host via email to determine a day to shadow them during winter break.  Travel reimbursements will not be provided for this program.

The majority of questions about Intern for a Day's process and structure will be addressed during the mandatory orientation session.  For other questions or concerns, please email ifad@umd.edu.

Students who have already participated in Intern for a Day still need to attend one orientation session.

Teaching Assistant Position at UNC

The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte offers a Master of Science in Earth Sciences degree with opportunities for study and research in the areas of geology, hydrology, atmospheric science, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and environmental science. Our program offers Earth Science graduate students personal guidance typical of a relatively small department, with the field, laboratory, and computing facilities and resources that accompany a much larger unit. Within this context, you will find a healthy combination of both field- and model-based Earth Science research as well as applied and academic research opportunities.

Our program is currently seeking competitive candidates for several teaching assistant positions beginning in fall 2019. Teaching assistantship funding may be supplemented by tuition awards for exceptional candidates.

The Women of Influence Awards recognize members of our community who have distinguished themselves by working with and for women on our campus and in our community. The President’s Commission on Women’s Issues (PCWI) is interested in applicants who have actively worked on behalf of diverse (in identity, discipline, and other dimensions of difference) communities of women. Nominees should be accomplished as University of Maryland members (students, staff, and/or faculty) with evidence of leadership in one or more of the core areas listed below including:

Funded Ph.D Positions at William and Mary

The AidData research lab at William and Mary (www.aiddata.org) invites applications for up to three funded doctoral research positions, hosted within the Department of Applied Science.  An annual stipend, tuition, recreation fees and health insurance are provided. Prospective students will work closely with the AidData Research and Evaluation Unit in support of at least one of two key institutional objectives - GIE and GEO.  The AidData-GEO initiative (www.geoquery.org) seeks to provide novel types of spatial data of high relevance to the international development community using high performance computation and machine learning.  The AidData-GIE initiative (www.aiddata.org/gie) focuses on the nexus of micro-econometric and GIScience methods to provide impact evaluations to the development community.  
We seek highly self-motivated researchers who desire to help bridge the gap between basic research leveraging spatial data and applied international development questions.  Prospective students should have a strong knowledge of spatial data manipulation in Python or R, spatial data collection, spatial analytics and related areas.  We anticipate the most successful candidates will have past experience using spatial or micro-economic analysis techniques (AidData-GIE), or machine learning techniques (AidData-GEO).

NOAA Hollings Scholarship-- Sophomores only

NOAA Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship for Sophomores

Attention SOPHOMORES studying atmospheric and oceanic sciences, environmental engineering, environmental sciences and policy, or ANY major with a strong environmental focus or interest!!! In the last three years, 17 Maryland students have won awards worth up to $9,500 annually along with paid summer research internships (see award benefits below)!!!

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings scholarship program is designed to: (1) increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; (2) increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; (3) recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and (4) recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States. The deadline to apply is Friday, January 31, 2019. US Citizenship, sophomore (2nd year) status, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 are required to apply.

AWARD BENEFITS: The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful SOPHOMORE applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with a hands-on research experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education project. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

Joint Program in Survey Methodology Internship

The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) at the University of Maryland is pleased to once again offer a 10-week summer internship to rising juniors and seniors with an interest in survey methodology.

JPSM, in a unique partnership, brings together faculty from the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan, as well as researchers from Westat, a leading survey organization based in Rockville, MD. Through its educational offerings the Joint Program attempts to serve both professionals currently working in statistical agencies and survey organizations, and to educate the next generation of survey professionals.

Each summer JPSM sponsors a Junior Fellows Program for a limited number of extremely successful and talented undergraduate students. Successful applicants are granted paid research assistantships in a Federal or private statistical agency in the Washington, DC area. They participate in weekly seminars at JPSM and elsewhere in the area on survey methodology and career options in survey research. Throughout the summer students learn about surveys, statistics, graduate studies, and how statistical agencies and survey organizations work, and they meet other students from across the country along with the JPSM faculty.

AAG Marble-Boyle Undergraduate Achievement Awards in Geographic Science

The AAG Marble-Boyle Undergraduate Achievement Awards in Geographic Science aims to recognize excellence in academic performance by undergraduate students from the U.S. and Canada who are putting forth a strong effort to bridge geographic science and computer science.  Each Marble-Boyle award consists of a cash prize of $1,000, a $200 credit for books published by Esri Press, and a certificate of recognition.
