We are also looking for students to join us on our Summer short term study abroad trip to Singapore!

UMD-Summer: Singapore: Religious Rehabilitation of Terrorists This program embeds a 10-day Singapore study tour in a 6 week-online course, allowing students to be exposed to the fundamental literature and complex theories of radicalization and deradicalization before landing in Singapore to hit the ground running when meeting with officials and researchers without sacrificing a full summer internship or job opportunity to study abroad.
While in Singapore, in coordination with Rohan Gunaratna’s International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at Nanyang Technological University, students engaged with leading experts in these fields, as Singapore is a world leader in deradicalization programs. Lectures and field visits to Changi Prison, the Harmony Center, and other religious and community based deradicalization program centers allowed students to directly apply the theoretical understanding to real-world programs addressing critical challenges in the world.

  • Program Cost: $4,675.

This event is proudly sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies and the Maryland Libraries. Undergraduate Research Day is held every April. Undergraduate Research Day 2017 was a great success.
With students involved in so many research opportunities, Undergraduate Research Day provides the perfect opportunity for them to share their work with the campus community. Held each April, Undergraduate Research Day showcases current research, scholarship, and artistic endeavors. Presentations, posters, and performances are open to the public and over 600 students participated in 2016, presenting 200 individual or team research projects. Any work conducted as a part of a campus course, internship, or program is eligible for presentation.
IMPORTANT: All posters should be designed for 36 x 48-inch dimensions, either portrait or landscape orientation. If your poster must be another size, please include the estimated size of your poster under Other Information when you submit your proposal or email this information to ugresearch@umd.edu.

Proposals are due on Monday, April 16, 2018.

Students should submit the completed proposal form preferably as a scanned email attachment to ugresearch@umd.edu. Alternatively, you can submit the proposal by hand to the National Scholarships Office at 2403 Marie Mount Hall. Submissions are due on Monday, April 16, 2018.

2018 BSOS Summer Scholars

We are pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for 2018 BSOS Summer Scholars. These are awards of $3000 to undergraduate students to support independent research projects with faculty in the summer. This program is modeled after, but separate from, the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research's (MCUR) Maryland Summer Scholars Program. Recipients will gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, national scholarships, and other awards. Students may expand their research into an independent study or Honors thesis during the following fall semester.

We will give a maximum of four awards. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors with at least a 3.4 GPA may apply. Applications should include:
  • an unofficial copy of the student's transcript and any other evidence of the student's scholarly accomplishments;
  • a letter of recommendation from a BSOS faculty member addressing the merit of the proposed summer research, the student's qualifications to undertake that project, a mentoring plan; and
  • a one-page personal statement from the student about their long-term professional/intellectual goals, and how this fellowship and research project would advance those goals.
BSOS Summer Scholar proposals are jointly submitted by the undergraduate student and the Faculty mentor who provides a support letter. The Faculty member must have an appointment in a BSOS Department or Center and the student must be a BSOS major.

Tropical Forest Ecology Internships in Panama


The Muller-Landau lab at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) seeks 3 interns to participate in research on tropical forest ecology in Panama for 9-12 months each.  One internship will focus on tropical forest carbon budgets, another on landscape-level variation in forest structure and dynamics, and a third on the role of lianas (woody vines).  The carbon intern will focus on synthesizing field data collected at multiple sites in Panama and across the ForestGEO / CTFS network of large-scale, long-term forest dynamics plots, and will participate in local field data collection.  The landscape intern will focus on collecting and analyzing geospatial data on forest structure and dynamics collected using drones to quantify variation in relation to topography, soils and climate, building on 3 years of data collection.  The liana intern will collect field data, analyze pre-existing datasets, and/or conduct modeling to investigate the determinants of liana abundance and the importance of liana strategy diversity.  Additional information on these opportunities can be found at http://www.forestgeo.si.edu/article/262/ 

All interns will have the opportunity to gain experience in tropical forest field work, quality assurance/quality control of the relevant datasets, programming and running analyses in R (and/or ArcGIS), and writing up results for scholarly publication.  The successful candidates will work closely with staff scientist Dr. Helene Muller-Landau and collaborators.  The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is located in Panama, and is home to a vibrant scientific community of 30 staff scientists, over 100 graduate and postdoctoral fellows, and 1500 scientific visitors per year.  

The ideal candidates have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, strong quantitative skills including programming experience, and strong English and/or Spanish oral and written communication skills.  The positions are particularly well suited for candidates seeking more research experience prior to graduate school.  Each internship will be compensated with a modest stipend sufficient to cover living expenses in Panama ($1000/month), as well as roundtrip travel to Panama if relevant. The start dates are flexible and can be as early as March or as late as September 2018.

Esri Technical Workshops

We will be hosting Esri representatives to provide some technical workshops to our GIS community at UMD on February 8, 2018. 

They will discuss or explore through hands-on demos regarding the ArcGIS platform, especially the deployment of Web GIS and Mobile GIS; Insights for ArcGIS; Esri Field Apps such as Collector for ArcGIS and Survey123, as well as ArcGIS API for Python. These workshops are free and open to the public. 

The space is limited (<=35) and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Please RSVP by filling out the online registration form by February 2, 2018. The Esri representatives will also be available on February 9 to host informal discussions addressing any needs or concerns from the GIS users on campus in terms of software, technical support, data and services.


Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship Program

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and public engagement. This program enables students to work on independent research projects under the direction of a SERC mentor.

Since 2001 the SERC internship program has been a National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) site. With this funding, along with generous donations from the Smithsonian Women's Committee and university partnerships, we are able to provide internship opportunities to qualified students looking to further their knowledge in the natural sciences.

Interns projects span the range of research conducted at SERC, including environmental chemistry, marine and estuarine ecology, molecular ecology, and terrestrial ecology. Projects are also offered in public engagement, with opportunities in environmental education, citizen science, and science writing. Although students will become familiar with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to an independent research project. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.

As an additional educational benefit, SERC maintains an ongoing seminar program that is designed to bring in noted outside speakers on a variety of topics in the environmental sciences. We also offer experiential field trips to the Smithsonian museums and galleries on the National Mall.

Paid Undergraduate Summer Research Internship

Are you interested in hands-on Hyperspectral Imaging experience and learning how to work with interdisciplinary teams? Here is an opportunity.

The Geography Department (www.uni.edu/csbs/geography) at the University of Northern Iowa once again host a NSF-funded REU program to introduce young scientists to a highly interdisciplinary research environment with fundamental and applied research in hyperspectral imaging. Hyperspectral imagine is widely used in various disciplines such as Earth Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Forestry, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geographic Information Science (GISc), and more. Students don't need to be a geography major or have remote sensing background to be qualified. A successful candidate should have U.S.-citizen or permanent-resident status and have at least one semester of undergraduate studies remaining after the initial summer program (graduating seniors in May 2018 and graduate students are not eligible to apply). The application deadline is March 22, 2018.

Summer Stipend: $4,000 for eight weeks (May 21-July 13, 2018). In addition, the program will cover the cost of transportation to and from the REU site, housing, a meal plan, lab supplies, and up to $750 for follow up activities.

ABOUT LEARNING LIFE & OUR CITIZEN DIPLOMACY INITIATIVE
Learning Life is an educational nonprofit in Washington D.C. that spreads learning in everyday life beyond school walls. Learning Life’s flagship program, the Citizen Diplomacy Initiative (CDI), engages lower-income American families, starting in Washington D.C.’s Ward 8, in live internet dialogues and project collaborations with lower-income families in other nations, including El Salvador, Senegal and Jordan. CDI aims to democratize diplomacy, and nurture more caring, capable global citizens.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Learning Life is now accepting resumes from interested metro D.C. graduate and undergraduate students interested in interning with our Citizen Diplomacy Initiative in Washington D.C. Depending on each student’s interests and skills plus our organizational needs, interns assist with a variety of tasks including outreach to find families, volunteers and partners locally and abroad, implementation of live international dialogues and local learning activities on health, community and world affairs; research and writing; photo and video; fundraising; document translation, and/or live language interpreting.

Interns must be able to commit 8-10 hours per week, consisting of a 3-4 hour event on Saturday or Sunday in DC with our participating children and families (e.g., family learning meetings, international dialogues, potlucks, field trips, learning games) and a 4-5 hour work meeting in DC with fellow interns and Learning Life’s Director, Paul Lachelier.

This opportunity is unpaid, but offers substantive, resume-building experience on an innovative international initiative, and a formal reference and/or recommendation letter upon request given satisfactory performance.

THE INTERNS WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Applicants should be interested in international affairs, languages, education, children, health and nutrition, and/or social justice. Applicants should also be outgoing, organized, detail-oriented, motivated and punctual. Native or fluent speakers of Arabic, Spanish or French are strongly encouraged to apply. Having a car is a strong plus, but not required.

Internships at the American Association of Geographers
The AAG seeks interns on a year-round basis for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.

Interns participate in most AAG programs and projects such as education, outreach, research, website, publications, or the Annual Meeting. The AAG also arranges for interns to accompany different AAG staff on visits to related organizations or events of interest during the course of their internship. A monthly stipend of $500 is provided and interns are expected to make their own housing and related logistical arrangements. Enrollment in a Geography or closely related program is preferred but not a prerequisite for these opportunities.

GEOG498I/788I: Topical Investigations: Data Structures for Geospatial Computing
The aim of the course is to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of geospatial representations, such as spatial indexes and network data structures, and with techniques for manipulating geospatial information for geographic information systems, for spatially-based decision systems and location-based services. The main topics will be vector-based map representation and querying techniques, manipulation and analysis of terrain models, network representations for applications to road networks and social networks, scalable representations for big geospatial data. Students with some programming background will highly benefit from this course.

Graduate Students Opportunities at Texas A&M

The Urban and Sustainability Research Group at Texas A&M University's Department of Geography is looking for MS and PhD students interested in studying urban sustainability.
Particularly, graduate students who are interested in human-environment interactions in urban contexts. Ongoing research themes include:
  • Urban land-change analysis and modeling
  • Environmental impacts of urbanization across scales
  • Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus issues in urban and peri-urban areas
  • Exposure and vulnerability of urban areas to natural hazards 
In addition to the above research interests, students should have, or be interested in developing:
  • Experience in engaging with social science data and methods 
  • Experience in complex systems analysis (e.g., using system dynamics, agent-based, or spatial statistical modeling)
  • Experience in GIS, remote sensing, and spatial analysis
  • Ability to work both independently and in interdisciplinary teams in a variety of contexts
  • Strong skills in oral and written communication
