Award-winning Investigative Journalist Seeks GIS Mapping Intern

Christine MacDonald, a veteran environmental journalist, author and Schell Reporting Fellow with The Investigative Fund at The Nation Institute, seeks a GIS intern with strong research skills. Digital savvy is a must, coding ability a plus.

Position available immediately
Seeking a graduate student or college senior skilled in the use of GIS to create maps that illuminate complicated issues. The maps produced will support the findings of a series of articles by MacDonald on topics including climate change, deforestation, water scarcity, the impacts of oil and gas drilling and factory farms, among other things.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Future investigative journalists, digital communicators, nonprofit leaders, university researchers, online developers, and anyone wishing to hone already stellar GIS skills; gain recognition in the field; and publish original work in large mainstream news publications.

The GIS intern will also gain knowledge of the publishing industry and how journalistic investigations work, and receive mentorship from a journalist with a long record of publishing in top U.S. news outlets. (Please see Christine MacDonald’s website for more information about her work.)

Qualifications:
·      Candidates must have strong GIS skills and experience plus an interest in using GIS to help tell complex environmental news stories about problems facing the world;
·      An ability to remain objective and engage people of different viewpoints;
·      A desire to seek the truth and communicate it clearly to a wide audience;
·      A commitment to accuracy and journalistic ethics;
·      Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Fluency in another language, in addition to English, is a plus;
·      Organizational and time management skills;
·      Comfortable working remotely with a minimum of supervision;
·      Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.

Flexible schedule
With the exception of occasional meetings, the GIS intern will make his/her own schedule and work independently with MacDonald’s guidance and mentoring.

This is an unpaid internship that will require 4-5 hours a week with tasks TBD. However, for each published article that includes GIS maps, MacDonald will provide a stipend payment equal to a minimum of 10 percent of her story fee.

Service Position Title: Enterprise GIS and Data Technician AmeriCorps Member

Service Position Summary:

The AmeriCorps recruit will work 40 hours per week on a Monday through Thursday schedule (4/10). Primary duties include researching, developing, presenting, and evaluating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data used for planning and natural resource management in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park engages in numerous infrastructure development and maintenance activities which require diligent review of impacts to sensitive resources as well as comprehensive application of civil planning and construction practices. Use of GIS and other design systems and software assist managers in making resource decisions that affect the park. The member will assist planners and resource managers in creating and evaluating data used by the park to ensure National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance as well as effective use and management of spatial and non-spatial data in support of park facility management operations.

The member will also assist park staff in integrating planning and maintenance GIS data in other aspects of park operations, particularly law enforcement, public safety, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Fire Effects, and Hydrology. This includes collection, development and deployment of data which supports visitor services such as campground facilities, Emergency Action Plans (EAP), trail maintenance, emergency spill response, real-time wildlife tracking, Search and Rescue, Cultural Resource Preservation, Environmental Impact Statements, and transportation planning. The goal of this project is to provide the park with a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the use of GIS data in park planning that compliments service-wide facility planning and resource conservation initiatives such as “Foundation” and “NPAtlas”.

Primary Functions of Position:

1) Develop and Deploy GIS data in support of NEPA compliance;

2) Collect, Develop, and Deploy GPS data associated with the location of park critical assets such as bears, feral hogs, elk, trail and road improvements, discovery of new hydrologic resources;

3) Train planners and designers in use of, and integration of, GIS data with other planning systems and software;

4) Provide Tier-1 GIS and data technical support to Resource Management and Emergency Operations operations;

5) Serve as members of the Search and Rescue Team.



Position Seasonal Breakdown:

Fall 2016:

Initial training will include use of NPS GIS software and Systems, park project planning, and use of surveying and drafting equipment and software;

Winter 2015-2016:

Member will coordinate collection and development of GIS data to support facility planning operations;

Member will collect GPS data of park critical assets.

Spring-Summer 2016:

Member will integrate GIS data into web-based mapping applications;

Member will perform data mining and analysis of non-GIS data;

Member will assist park staff in use of GIS data for maintenance and construction planning

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must have own transportation & a valid driving license (*no moving violations allowed)

Paid or unpaid experience with GIS and/or GPS and/or Databases;

Paid or unpaid experience in the natural resource or environmental field;

Strong interest in environmental natural resource conservation and civil planning or engineering;

Must be able to work as a member of a diverse and complex team;

Able to work independently and take leadership on goal accomplishment;

Capable of working with people from diverse backgrounds;

Ability to safely navigate very steep and rocky terrain, verifiable climbing experience

Service Conditions:

Summer GIS Internship Opportunity in Fairfax, VA

We are looking for a student with good hands-on GIS skills to work with us as one of our interns this summer.
The Fairfax County Park Authority’s Park Planning & Development Division, headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, 20 miles west of Washington, DC, offers summer internships in a sincere effort to provide a quality, diversified program in which students from the urban affairs, environmental and land use planning, landscape architecture and geography disciplines have the opportunity to apply traditional academic classroom learning to actual work experience within a local government planning agency, in order to develop personal and professional skills for future career development and placement. The Park Planning & Development Division has hosted up to three student interns each summer for the past decade and has found it to be a mutually beneficial program.
Park Planning Intern
Description: The Park Planning Intern will work with the Park Planning team on projects that support long range park planning efforts, individual park master plan projects, land development impact review, GIS mapping projects, and/or AutoCAD design of park sites. Responsibilities may include attending planning team meetings; assisting with logistics of planning public outreach meetings; evaluating rezoning applications and site plans for impacts to parkland; working on park master plan conceptual designs, updating park data layers and database information in GIS, making maps, conducting research, writing reports, and making presentations to staff teams and managers. Actual assigned projects will depend upon the student’s skills and interests. Depending on the areas of assignment, there may be an opportunity to interact with staff in other county agencies, such as Planning & Zoning, Public Works, and Community Revitalization.
Requirements: Coursework in geography, land use planning, public policy planning and analysis, landscape architecture, park and recreation planning, and/or natural resource management. Good research and writing skills, attention to detail. Microsoft Office computer skills. Some ArcInfo GIS and/or AutoCAD experience is required if the student seeks to work on GIS and CAD projects.
Schedule: The intern will be expected to make a commitment to work a minimum of 20 hours per week for about 12 weeks from mid- to late-May until early- to mid-August (start and end dates are flexible). The position is unpaid, but the Park Authority will work with the student on necessary paperwork if seeking course credit and a written letter of recommendation will be provided at successful completion of the program. Free temporary housing at one of the Park Authority’s historic properties may be available to out of state students, but the intern must provide their own vehicle for transportation to and from the office. Orientation will be provided to interns during their first few weeks on the job and a meeting with senior managers and the Park Authority Board will be scheduled for an evening in July.
