The office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy  (MICA) strives to create opportunities for personal growth, organizational involvement and community development through multiculturalism, diversity and social justice. It is with great enthusiasm that we invite you to attend our Latinx Student Involvement kickoff event for the academic year. 

The Latinx Student Welcome will be held Tuesday September 3rd, 2019 at 5:30pm in the Grand Ballroom - Adele H. Stamp Student Union. Doors will open at 5:15pm. Come enjoy a night of games, prizes, food and a chance to meet new people! We will be hearing from various campus partners about resources and opportunities on campus. Learning Life Internship

FALL 2019 INTERNSHIP:

HELP DEVELOP FAMILY DIPLOMACY & OPEN THE WORLD TO LOWER-INCOME CHILDREN

ABOUT LEARNING LIFE AND THE INTERNSHIP

Learning Life is a nonprofit education and citizen engagement lab based in Washington D.C.  Our flagship program, the Citizen Diplomacy Initiative (CDI), connects families in different nations via the internet to nurture a family form of citizen diplomacy.

Learning Life is now accepting resumes from graduate and undergraduate students interested in interning with our Citizen Diplomacy Initiative.  Students can intern from anywhere in the USA, though preferably from the East Coast time zone (EST).  Depending on each student’s interests and skills plus our organizational needs, interns assist with a variety of tasks including research and writing; local to global outreach via social media, email and phone; document translation and/or live language interpreting; website and design; photo and video recording and/or editing; fundraising and more.

The internship starts Friday, September 6, and ends Friday, December 6.  During this period, interns must be able to commit a total of about 8 hours/week consisting of:

1.     A five-hour work meeting on Fridays 12-5pm at George Washington University’s Marvin Center in DC (2-3 blocks from the Foggy Bottom Station on the Orange/Silver/Blue Lines) with fellow interns and Learning Life’s Director, Paul Lachelier.  Interns outside metro DC work during the same period, but online in direct communication with Paul.

2.     2-3 hours of homework or a weekend world education field trip or meeting with lower-income families or children Learning Life works with in DC through our Citizen Diplomacy Initiative.

This internship is unpaid, but offers substantive, resume-building experience on an innovative international diplomacy initiative, and a formal reference and/or recommendation letter upon request given satisfactory performance. 

THE INTERNS WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Applicants should be interested in international affairs, social media (including Facebook), education, and children and families, and also be outgoing, organized, detail-oriented, motivated and punctual.  The ability to read, write and speak French or Spanish at at least an intermediate level is a strong plus.  Demonstrated skill in building social media audience, ideally on Facebook, is a plus, but not required.  For those students in metro DC, having a car is also a plus but not required.

GEOG498G: Models & Methods for Spatial Data Science Technical Class

Introduces a spatial data science (SDS) framework for uncovering spatial patterns and understanding spatial processes, whether they are generated by humans, the physical environment, or a combination thereof. This course first covers some basic principles of popular computational tools for SDS and then surveys a variety of geographic conceptual models and quantitative methods from the traditions of spatial analysis and spatialstatistics. A strong emphasis is placed on the practical deployment of these models and methods and their interpretation. Students will develop expertise in common design decisions, analytical intuition, and limitations of SDS through real world examples and applied projects, as well as build their repertoire of Python programming skills for obtaining, processing, and analyzing spatial data.

Research Assistants Needed for Implementation Study of Early Care and Education Center

Serving Low-income Children

Overview: Dr. Brenda Jones Harden, Professor, Department of Human Development and
Quantitative Methodology at the University of Maryland College Park (UMD), is seeking an
undergraduate research assistant (URA) to work in our lab. The URAs would be part of a busy
and thriving research-to-practice group – the Prevention and Early Adversity Research Lab
(PEARL) in UMD’s College of Education. This position is ideal for a young professional wanting to
work with children and families and/or seeking to attend graduate school at a later point.

Responsibilities: The URA position is related to a contracted research project with an early care
and education center in Washington, DC serving young children ages 0-5. URAs will develop
relationships with parents and school personnel to build rapport and conduct good-quality research.
URAs may be responsible for conducting child assessments including measures of language, cognition, and school readiness, as well as parent interviews. Additional duties include entering data,
reviewing relevant literature, and helping with the organization of the project.

This position will be located at an early care and education program in Northeast Washington, DC (about 15-20 minutes from UMD). This center is metro-accessible; however, it is easier if the URA has their own transportation. Ideally, students should have availability some weekday mornings, from 8am-12pm. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. There are options to work in the lab for credit or volunteer.

Qualifications:

● Major in psychology, education, child development, family science, or a related discipline.
● Some experience working with children and families.
● Background using SPSS or other data entry programs is a plus, but not required.
● Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills are required.
● Minimum 6 hours per week preferred.

We are currently seeking dedicated and enthusiastic college students who love working with kids and want to give back to their community.

Scholarship with Organization of Fish & Wildlife-- Due 8/30

The Organization of Fish and Wildlife Information Managers (OFWIM) announces the OFWIM Student Research Scholarship which recognizes academic and professional excellence among students enrolled full-time in fisheries/wildlife related curricula at an accredited college or university, with research or study emphasizing wildlife information management and/or geographic information systems (GIS).  This scholarship supports student research and attendance at the 2019 OFWIM Conference and Annual meeting in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, October 6-10, 2019.  To learn more about OFWIM and for a link to the application form, visit http://www.ofwim.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2019-Research-Scholarship-Form.pdf.

Two awards will be made and is open to graduate or undergraduate students who are local to the conference and working towards a program such as a Bachelor’s degree, Graduate Certificate Program, Master’s degree, or PhD.  Membership in OFWIM is not required for eligibility.

The award will be based on quality of the applicant and the research project.  The recipient must present a formal paper on the research project prospectus during the 2019 Conference and Annual Meeting to be held at Shepherdstown, West Virginia, October 6-10, 2019. The recipient must also present a formal paper on the project results or significant progress at the OFWIM 2020 Conference and Annual Meeting to be held TBD.

The recipients will be eligible for a $500 research scholarship awarded at the 2019 conference and a second $500 research scholarship awarded at the 2020 conference.  In addition, the recipients will be awarded a student conference registration fee waiver for two years, and up to $1000 travel reimbursement will be available for the 2020 conference.

Gotoco is a small social enterprise committed to promoting cultural exchange between China and the English-speaking world. Our programs are unique because we do not charge anyone to take part. Social enterprises are businesses committed to helping improve local, national and global communities and reinvest any profits into their social mission. Our aim is to introduce more Western university students to China and its diverse culture. We seek to improve tomorrow’s international relations by allowing the next generation of leaders to engage with one of the most economically, politically and culturally important countries of the 21st century. Graduate Student Assistant at the Environmental Finance Center

AAG Internship

The AAG is recruiting specifically for an intern who has both GIS and computer programming skills and experience, to work closely with one of our staff members on an NSF-funded grant for a Geospatial Virtual Data Enclave (GVDE).


We welcome applications from interested students, who can offer approx. 25 - 30 hours a week to the AAG for the fall semester.

Internships at AAG
The AAG seeks interns on a year-round basis for the spring, summer, and fall semesters. 
Interns participate in most AAG programs and projects such as education, outreach, research, website, publications, or the Annual Meeting. The AAG also arranges for interns to accompany different AAG staff on visits to related organizations or events of interest during the course of their internship. A monthly stipend of $700 is provided and interns are expected to make their own housing and related logistical arrangements. Enrollment in a Geography or closely related program is preferred but not a prerequisite for these opportunities.
