GIS Consultant Position - ROME, ITALY

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill a Geographic Information System Consultant position, which will be based in the Emergency Preparedness and Support Response Division (OSE) at our Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

As part of the GIS unit, the Mapping and Data Management team provides constant support to WFP emergency operations. The GIS consultant will report to the team leader under the supervision of the GIS unit head. The GIS consultant will be responsible for the following key duties:

Work within the Mapping and Data Management Team in support of several divisions/units/clusters that are constantly in need of mapping support;

He/She will support the development of workflows, systems and tools to be able to:
  • Create new maps or update existing products
  • Maintain spatial databases with focus on the corporate Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI)
  • Create/Update Web GIS maps using WFP Dynamic mapping system (GeoNode/ArcGIS Online)
  • Transpose non-GIS data into GIS readable format
  • Assist in the preparation of material for meetings, symposium, and conferences
  • Print and plot maps
  • Develop procedures and workflows for the improvement of the management of geospatial assets;
  • Design models to automate the acquisition, the processing and subsequent exploitation of geographic datasets;
  • Create maps and dashboards in support of WFP Divisions such as Logistics, Operational Information Management, Early Warnings, Food Security, and other Programmes;
  • Promote implementation of standards related to mapping such as templates, naming convention, symbols and metadata;
  • Deploy to the field in case of emergency;
Qualifications and experience required:
Education:
University degree in Environmental Sciences, Geography or related field.

Experience:
From 0 - 2 years of experience in the field of Geographic Information Systems
Some experience within a humanitarian organization is an asset

Skills:
Good working knowledge of the whole ArcGIS suite (Desktop and Online). Other open source software is an asset.
Knowledge of database management with PostgreSQL
Scripting skills with Python or javascript is an asset
Proven ability to work with various sources of data formats (either spatial data or non) to produce data visualizations
