Calling all Geographer-Artists! Do you have a great idea for a sticker representing our Department? Submit it by October 10th for consideration for our Sticker Design Contest! 

The winning sticker design will be utilized over the next year for marketing purposes. The winning designer will receive a Geography Prize Pack and a feature on the GEOG website.

2) Submission must be original. You may not incorporate the BSOS "B" logo.

AAG Marble-Boyle Undergraduate Achievement Award

The AAG Marble-Boyle Undergraduate Achievement Awards in Geographic Science aims to recognize excellence in academic performance by undergraduate students from the U.S. and Canada who are putting forth a strong effort to bridge geographic science and computer science. Each Marble-Boyle award consists of a cash prize of $1,000, a $200 credit for books published by Esri Press, and a certificate of recognition.

ICON Program at University of Georgia - Funded PhD Opportunities

The University of Georgia's Integrative Conservation (ICON) PhD program is seeking two outstanding students for doctoral research assistantships. Both positions begin in August 2019. Stipend for the academic year, summer stipend, and tuition waiver are guaranteed for four years, upon successful annual evaluations.

AAG Internship

The AAG seeks interns on a year-round basis for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.

Interns participate in most AAG programs and projects such as education, outreach, research, website, publications, or the Annual Meeting. The AAG also arranges for interns to accompany different AAG staff on visits to related organizations or events of interest during the course of their internship. A monthly stipend of $500 is provided and interns are expected to make their own housing and related logistical arrangements. Enrollment in a Geography or closely related program is preferred but not a prerequisite for these opportunities.

Pizza and Trivia Night!

The GEOG Graduate Student Organization is hosting a pizza and trivia night on September 14, 2018 at 5:00pm in LeFrak 1158! This event is open to the entire department and features some small prizes for winning teams!

The geography focused trivia will help students prepare for the Mid-Atlantic Division American Association of Geographers (MAD-AAG) World Geography Bowl. The World Geography Bowl is a geography trivia event with teams of undergraduate and graduate students competing for prizes. Each year winners of the MAD-AAG World Geography Bowl receive a travel stipend greatly offsetting expenses for attendance at the national meeting.

I hope to see you all on Friday! Each trivia team will be a maximum of 5 people, so find a team and study up!

Ariel Golightly (GEOG Representative)


Hi! My name is Ariel Golightly and I’m a junior Geographical Sciences major on a Sustainability and Development track with a GIS and Sustainability Studies double-minor. In addition to DSAC, I am part of the honor society of ALD & PES as well as a member of the Beta-Phi chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographical Honor Society. 

In my spare time I enjoy cooking, hiking, doing yoga, reading, and being outside whenever possible. In the future I intend to pursue a Masters degree in Geography, then join the Peace Corps after graduation. Currently I am unsure of exactly what I want to pursue as a career but I’m especially interested in urban planning, agricultural sustainability and environmental policy. I’m so excited to participate in DSAC and be an active member of the BSOS community!

START Internship Spring 2019

START offers unpaid internships year round on a variety of research projects and teams. During the course of their internship, participants are exposed to the most up-to-date theories, methods and information related to the study of terrorism. They are versed in the critical questions tackled by homeland security practitioners, policy makers and researchers, and are mentored in a professional environment geared toward student success. The program is designed to prepare the next generation of homeland security scholars and practitioners through real-world research experience.

START’s internship program is open to undergraduate and graduate students (as well as some recent graduates) in any related discipline from any institution. Each internship lasts for one term. Our internships can be undertaken for academic credit, and this is highly encouraged. Interns participate in a program of enrichment and career development opportunities. All interns are required to work onsite with their research project staff. Because interns work directly with our researchers and staff on current research projects, the internship positions vary depending on our research portfolio.

NASA Internship

The NASA DEVELOP Program focuses on helping local and international communities better understand environmental concerns through the use of NASA's Earth observations. NASA DEVELOP operates at twelve locations across the country including locations at NASA centers and other regional locations. This is a great opportunity for individuals who are interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS, specifically in the field of Earth Science. Program participants work with NASA scientists, partner organizations, and science advisors to learn about the use of NASA Earth science data for application in water resources, disaster management, ecological forecasting, and other applications to address environmental community concerns.

Responsibilities include: literature review, data processing and analysis, and producing deliverables, such as a technical report, presentation, and video. Previous GIS or remote sensing knowledge, while beneficial, is not required for acceptance. This is a multi-disciplinary opportunity for all those interested in Earth science and we encourage those in the social sciences, general science, engineering, computer science, etc. to apply. Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. Days of the week are flexible, but applicants should be able to commit to 20 – 29 hours per week during the spring term. The position is paid on an hourly basis that is determined by education level.

Responsibilities

As a Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
Research historical information, survey requests, national priorities, and other relevant information to define a survey project area, and develop draft project instructions and statements of work using GIS and other tools.
Assist senior team members with research and planning of hydrographic surveys.
Acquire, process, and analyze hydrographic data, including all the ancillary data used to transform raw bathymetric soundings to chart datum.
Search for improved techniques and better technologies.
Deploy up to 180 days a year to survey vessels to maintain proficiency.

Research Assistant Opportunity

Environmental Decision Support Science Lab

Who we are: Join a dynamic research team working at the interface of science and policy. Our research team works on environmental decision support and indicators, focused on how we can better support environmental and climate decisions and policies. We have developed a vision for an end-to-end system that considers physical, environmental, and societal indicators of climatic change, impacts, vulnerabilities, and responses. We also have multidisciplinary research related to usable science, complex environmental decision-making, and synthesis in support of Federal agency decisions.

Location: The work location is at the University of Maryland Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC), located in the Discovery District. The Discovery District UMD shuttle 123 bus stops in the court where ESSIC is located. There is also free parking.

Research Assistant Duties
: Depending on the interests of the student, projects can be customized to the interests and marketable skills that would be most beneficial for the student’s career. Potential duties and tasks include: coordination of teams, including scientists and Federal employees; event planning for workshops with leading experts in environmental policy; development of policy memos and presentations; identification and synthesis of climate decision support and indicators literature; development and analysis of indicator surveys and experiments; transcription and deductive coding of expert interviews, and editing and formatting scientific papers and policy documents.

Junior GIS Analyst Position

Junior GIS Analyst

Description:
The project is for a US Marine Corps Space Management Data Collection task and the candidate will work with a team of GIS analysts, collecting interior 3D Point cloud data and attribution in the field. Back in the office, the candidate will be responsible for converting the raw data to GIS layers, which will depict building, work, and equipment spaces. GIS layers will be represented at the building, installation, and service levels. All GIS layers will be converted to AutoCAD format. Travel is expected about 25% of the time. While knowledge of AutoCAD would be helpful, it is not a requirement for this position.

Qualifications:
A Bachelor's Degree, OR High School Diploma w/four years experience in lieu of degree.

Required:
- Experience using ESRI ArcGIS
- Must have a good understanding of GIS field data collection and must have strong oral and written communication skills.

Desired:
- Experience in the development of Field Work Plans, GIS data collection plans, and presentations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Experience with 3D Laser Scanning
- Experience using AutoCAD
- Experience with Navy space management business processes, and the Spatial Data Standard for Facilities, Infrastructure, and Environment (SDSFIE).

Research Analyst Job Opportunity

Position: Research Analyst / Scientific Programmer

Location: NASA GSFC / University of Maryland / SSAI

Project Title: Spatio-temporal variability in remotely sensed products

We are seeking applications for a full-/part-time Research Analyst or a junior programmer to work on a NASA-funded project. The potential applicant has a strong background in remote sensing and is competent in analytical skills. The research focus is on identifying and validating anomalies in time-series products derived from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 in coastal/inland waters. The geographic scope of the project is bodies of water (e.g., lakes/reservoirs) in the North and South America. The incumbent will be working with International stakeholders and United Nations Environmental Protection (UNEP) offices to promote using satellite data for monitoring SDG 6, i.e., water quality, in different member countries.

This is initially a one-year term but can be extended depending on a satisfactory annual performance. The incumbent will be based at either the University of Maryland or NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The employment comes with full, competitive benefit package for full-time employees.

Orioles x UMD University Night-- Sept 19

Over the summer we went to a National's game as a group from the Geographical Science department and had great attendance from faculty, students, and staff!

This semester we are coordinating a similar event to see the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, September 19th, 7pm at Oriole Park at Camden Yards for University Night. Tickets are $34 for lower level seats and $20 for upper level seats. Both include a co-branded Orioles / UMD hat as seen below.

(Please note: eligibility is limited to US Citizens and Permanent Residents; a minimum GPA of 3.85 or higher is recommended. Candidates must be sophomores or juniors in Fall 2018.)

The Maryland Student Researchers (MSR) program maintains a University-wide online bulletin board where UMD researchers post research opportunities for undergraduate students. It is a great way for undergraduates to learn about the rewards and challenges of academic research. Over 165 projects are listed with more being added so check back regularly over the next several weeks.

The MSR bulletin board is designed to help undergraduates find research opportunities that are a good fit for their interests and qualifications, and to help faculty members find students to assist with their research project(s). The research opportunities posted on the MSR website typically call for students to spend around six hours a week working under the direction of a faculty mentor on that faculty member’s own research. Participating students learn skills and gain valuable experience that will enhance their graduate school and job qualifications. Many positions are for volunteers, some are paid.

ELIGIBILITY: Any student in good academic standing may apply directly for any listed opportunities for which they have the listed required skills. It is open to undergraduates of all majors and disciplines with an interest in research. Many positions are offered on a volunteer basis, and selection of undergraduate researchers is made solely by the faculty members who provide the listed opportunities.

AASP289D "African American Health Disparities and Social Justice" -- Seats Available

The African American Studies Department is currently offering a new course "African American Health Disparities and Social Justice" (AASP 298D). Blending the study of health and well-being with social science, this class explores how issues such as institutional racism lead to racial health disparities and how social justice efforts can eliminate them.
