Greenbelt GIS Internship and Volunteer Opportunity

GIS Volunteer/Internship Opportunities

Benefits:

Gain real-world professional work experience in the field of GIS while giving back to a community in need of your expertise;

Although volunteers and interns are unpaid, letters of recommendation will be offered upon successful completion of a GIS assignment.

Duties:

Download, convert and upload GIS data available from internal and external sources to make them usable;
Perform GIS data quality control, including reviewing data for completeness and accuracy; identifying and correcting errors or omissions in the data;
Catalog and inventory GIS data, including metadata creation;
Work independently as well as in a team environment with other Public Works staff on inventory gathering, maintaining spatial data, and map creation of the city's infrastructure;
Gather data using ESRI Collector for ArcGIS;
Train other Public Works Department staff in the use of these applications.

Ideal qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of geography as applied to concepts and principles of GIS, map projections, coordinate systems and cartographic designs;
Experience with ESRI ArcGIS, with the ability to collect and organize baseline data about the infrastructure in Greenbelt;
Can take initiative, problem solve, and work independently;
Can build positive interpersonal relationships, work effectively as part of a team;
Has strong verbal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with staff;
Has strong written communication skills, especially with developing reports;
Has own, or has access to, transportation to and from the City of Greenbelt Public Works.

BSOS385/685: Big-Data Analysis on the BSOS HPC Cluster: Advanced Programming for the Social Sciences (Summer I 2018; Meets TuTh 3:30pm-6pm)
Course Description: Social media is a primary source of information on social interaction and personal interests. High-performance computing (HPC) is employed to search for hidden patterns and unknown correlations using advanced machine-learning algorithms available in python and R packages. The main steps of Natural Language Processing and big-data analysis are being worked out, from examining random samples to analyzing large data sets via in-memory Monte-Carlo applications and neural networks. The courses will be offered in a non-standard format with 10 hours of instruction per week and four hours per week of online and/or supervised coursework. Open to all BSOS majors. 2-credits.

Moovit Mapathon-- Last Day to Register!!

Geography Club will be hosting their second Moovit Mapathon on May 3, 2018 from 5-8pm in LEF 1138To learn more about Moovit and mapathons you can check out the event page and the video we made last year.  Attached is the registration form for the Mapathon. You must register before this Tuesday, April 24th so that we can place t-shirt orders. 

They will be mapping Loudoun County Transit, which will connect several commuter cities to the larger metro areas of DC & Baltimore. The Loudoun Editor project is open, so once you have filled out the registration form for the event you can head over and create your account for the project. It's recommended that you look around the editor before the event to get familiar with it. There will provide a quick training session before the event begins and there will be members walking around to answer questions!

MD Sea Grant Science Management & Policy Internship

Maryland Sea Grant Science Management and Policy Internship
Are you graduating or a recent graduate looking for an opportunity in science policy or management? Apply to join the Maryland Sea Grant (MDSG) team as a Science Management and Policy Intern. This one to two year internship will offer experience working with an environmental focused university organization dedicated to research, education, and outreach. This position will provide fundamental training for interns to transition to graduate school or the private, non-profit, or governmental sectors. As part of the internship, you will be expected to complete 2-3 special projects, participate in several professional development trainings, and contribute to the administration of our main office.

This internship will be for one year with the option to renew for a second year. The internship is a full-time, 40 hours per week, Contractual Contingent 2 position at Maryland Sea Grant's office in College Park, Maryland. The intern will be paid an annual salary of $33,000 as well as limited benefits including health insurance, tuition remission, and generous leave.

Social Justice Day


The University of Maryland will host its 2nd Annual Social Justice Day on Monday, April 23, 2018 in theAdele H. Stamp Student Union and Memorial Chapel. Drawing from the success of the inaugural event,Social Justice Day 2018 will be a daylong exchange inviting faculty, staff, students, and our community to learn about the work of others involved in important causes and to share ideas.

Earth Day Map-a-Thon


Come join UMD's Geography Club and Gamma Theta Upsilon chapter and GW Humanitarian Mapping Society on April 21, 2018 for their map-a-thon! They will be contributing to the  OpenStreetMap (OSM) for humanitarian needs, focusing on mapping for issues facing the natural environment in celebration of Earth Day. This is part of the larger network of volunteers working to put the world's vulnerable people on the map, through the Missing Maps initiative. The event is free and open to anyone and everyone, and no experience in OSM, geography, or GIS is necessary. OSM training for new mappers will be and mapping tasks for all mapping levels will be provided, as well as lightning talks and geocaching activities. This is a great opportunity to learn a new skill and network with peers and professionals in the DMV area, as well as bring more university Geography departments such as yours into the YouthMappers network. The map-a-thon is free and anyone can get a ticket through our eventbrite page.

Scholarship for Summer Unpaid Internships


The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $250-$1,250 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships with non-profit organizations and government agencies.

Eligible Candidates 
All registered University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students returning to campus for the fall 2018 semester, who have an internship for summer 2018, are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors (May 2018 & August 2018) are not eligible. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors graduating in December 2018 and to those who have not previously received an award.  In order for a student's internship to qualify for funding support, it must satisfy the following criteria:
  • Unpaid on-campus or off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency
  • Offered during the summer and completed by Friday, August 24, 2018
  • Supervised by a professional in the organization

The Social and Moral Development Lab is recruiting Research Assistants to work on several exciting projects that involve research with children and adolescents. We study the origins of prejudice, stereotypes, and bias in childhood. We also examine children’s emerging concerns with fairness, equality, and rights. Summer internships are 10-15 hours/week for 10 weeks. Fall internships are 10 hours/week for credit or volunteer.

We are investigating how children and adolescents make decisions about friendships, inclusion and exclusion in peer groups, the allocation of resources, and the attributions of intentions.

National Capital Planning Commission, Washington, DC
In addition to working in an office environment, interns also gain field experience by conducting walk throughs and site visits throughout the nation’s capital. To be considered for this program, students must meet certain program eligibility requirements such as a minimum of half-time current enrollment in an accredited institution, as well as any specific skills indicated below: 

1. The Physical Planning Division is seeking GIS interns to perform comprehensive technical research analysis, and assist with graphic and presentation work in landscape architecture, architecture, and/or urban planning matters. Education in these or related fields and strong organizational, technical, and research skills; proficiency with CAD/GIS and Adobe Creative Suite is highly preferred. This division conducts planning and design work to address executive and legislative directives, emerging issues, or implementation of Commission policies focused on physical features or a specific geography. Interns may support the National Mall Streetscape Manual Update and/or Pennsylvania Avenue Initiative. 

2. The Policy and Research Division is seeking an intern to participate in several planning, research, and urban design activities that may involve the Smart Cities Initiative, Comprehensive Plan, Viewshed Studies, and Commemoration. This division researches critical issues and opportunities facing the National Capital Region. It evaluates policy options and priorities, and works on the congressionally mandated Comprehensive Plan and Federal Capital Improvements Program. 

3. The Office of Public Engagement is seeking an intern to assist with the planning and execution of public events and outreach, to include social media, media releases, and Commission materials, as well as to research topics involving urban planning and design such as flooding, commemoration, and parks. This division coordinates outreach and participation on all aspects of NCPC’s initiatives and activities with the public and media, and fosters partnerships to address planning challenges in the National Capital Region. 

While student internships at NCPC are unpaid, students gain experience in the federal planning and policymaking environment while working alongside NCPC staff.

Have you been involved in research as an undergraduate, either as an individual or as part of a team, at Maryland or beyond? Would you like the opportunity to present your work at Maryland¹s largest, most visible and diversified showcase for undergraduate research accomplishments?

Then present your research at Undergraduate Research Day on Wednesday, April 25, 2018!  This year Undergraduate Research Day will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union, so your work will reach the widest possible audience.

The Undergraduate Research Day poster session will run from 1 to 4 pm on April 25 with set-up beginning at 11:30 am. You can be present part or all of the time. All majors and fields of research ­ including creative and performing arts ­ are welcome!

Submitting a poster proposal is free and easy ­ you can find the form on the MCUR website at http://www.ugresearch.umd.edu/current-ugresearchday.html -  the deadline to submit your proposal is April 17 but we strongly encourage you to submit early. We look forward to learning about your work!

ARCH200 Summer Course


What is an architectural plan?
What is the difference between a two-dimensional and three-dimensional drawing?
What relationship exists between them?

ARCH200 focuses on architectural drawings, design media, and visual representation through lectures, field sketching and visual exercises.  Students will experience creative, innovative ways to examine the world through architectural design thinking and hands-on experience. Over the course of the semester, each student will experiment with design representation through drawing, diagramming, modeling, computer applications, and sketching.

The course is designed for entry-level students interested in pursuing a degree in architecture and for anyone interested in learning about architectural representation.

The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at the University of Oxford is looking for students at the to apply for our Enterprise and the Environment Summer School which will take place from July 1st - 13, 2018 in Oxford.
